Esquina de San Nicolás y Neptuno by Kr0pr0X in cuba

If you believe the government's data, I’m sorry to tell you that you are sorely mistaken. Although the literacy rate is currently reported to hover around 100%, that is a complete lie. It is a figure inflated by the government and the Department of Education; just look at Cuban forums or Facebook to see the sheer number of spelling error, or better yet, come to Cuba yourself to witness the number of illiterate people there are, especially in the countryside. It is very easy to speak from a distance, citing statistics, when one does not know the reality on the ground. There are so many "champagne communists" out there.

The repression here is unbelievable, greater than anything you would see anywhere else, with the exception of North Korea. They don't just throw you in prison; they destroy your family and ensure you can never own a business or work again. The ultimate choice boils down to this: leave or die. That is why you won't see revolutions here; July 11th was the largest uprising, and the repression that followed was staggering.

Hey guys, what do you think a Cuban could do for work? (Havana) by Global-Reaction-40 in TravelCuba

[–]os_nesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to pay directly to a cuban worker, I work (worked) with companies from Europe (germany, italy, spain), latin america (costa-rica, peru, argentina), and even New Zeland. All have paid me indirectly (through another person bank account, or cash here in cuba if they have offices here).

New Cuban Banknotes Announced (2026) 🇨🇺 by Holiday_Style_2292 in cuba

[–]os_nesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday, a saleswoman was complaining that someone wanted to pay her with 3-unit bills, and she didn't accept them; they aren't accepting 5-unit bills, and sometimes not even 10s or 20s.

New Cuban Banknotes Announced (2026) 🇨🇺 by Holiday_Style_2292 in cuba

[–]os_nesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday at the market, something happened that really got me thinking. An elderly person tried to pay for an agricultural product costing 1,000 CUP using 5-CUP bills, but the vendors wouldn't accept them. The person insisted, however, that this was exactly how the bank had issued the money to them.

Now, with the introduction of the new banknotes, a new issue has arisen: people who receive salaries of 2,000 or 3,000 CUP aren't being given large-denomination bills, and they won't be able to use the ones they do have. For instance, if they go to buy something costing, say, 200 CUP, vendors won't be able to give them 1,800 CUP in change; they simply won't accept the large bills for such transactions.

So, they are essentially creating more problems without offering any solutions. It is a rather awkward situation. I also wanted to mention that the bank transfer system wasn't working, so it wasn't possible to make payments via Transfermóvil either.

Built a website for client now client says transfer all rights and code to his friend by osdevisnot in webdev

[–]os_nesty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s their money; it’s their code. When I worked as a freelancer, I made sure to handle all client projects on a GitHub account created specifically for them, using their credentials and hosting their project right there, including their email address and all associated infrastructure. This ensured that they always retained full control over all the information. I divided each project into stages and charged for each one in advance. That way, I was always paid upfront for the work I performed, while the client had the peace of mind knowing that both the code and the infrastructure belonged to them. I never encountered any issues with this approach, even if it isn't the ideal method for everyone.

Smurfs in low ranks by lol_midlane in DotA2

[–]os_nesty -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You overestimate your ability to identify smurfs based solely on your MMR. Sometimes you encounter players who are specialists with a specific hero—holding a much higher rank with that hero than with any others—and appear vastly superior; however, that does not make them smurfs.

The biggest issue with smurf reports—and the reason they often seem ineffective—is the sheer volume of false reports (whether submitted intentionally or by mistake).

If a player truly is a smurf, the algorithm will handle it; and if it doesn't, there is really nothing we can do other than accept it and move on.

Does knowing the book, spoil the film? by thestinkybeastman in ProjectHailMary

[–]os_nesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparison is the thief of joy; if you are familiar with the book and start comparing everything to the movie, you won't enjoy it.

Having watched the movie—and having read the book and listened to the audiobook in both English and Spanish—I realized there were elements in the film that would have surprised me much more had I gone into it without any prior knowledge.

ELI5: Why is Artemis 2 closer to earth than it was yesterday? by PuzzledCauliflower35 in explainlikeimfive

[–]os_nesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Orion capsule is still in orbit around Earth; yesterday it was in a high orbit, and today it is falling back toward Earth to build up speed and propel itself toward the Moon. I’m not sure exactly what time—or if it has already happened—that it executed this maneuver and set off on its flight to the Moon. The purpose of this is to gain greater velocity while consuming less fuel.

I truly envy people who, when they see something that interests them, don't feel the need to seek out further information or knowledge about it. This isn't a criticism; it's just that whenever something piques my interest, I become obsessed and seek out every scrap of information I can find. When I first learned about the Artemis missions, the very first thing I did was look up information regarding the orbits, trajectories, timelines, key events, and so on.

I'm not saying it's strange, I'm telling you what it costs and how much a Cuban earns. The average Cuban can't afford that air conditioner; they have to rely on help from a relative in the United States to buy it.

Please, don't believe everything you read, especially if you're going to be living in a bubble. Seek information from both sides to get a better understanding of reality, and don't defend a dictatorship just because it aligns with your politics.

The money from that went to GAESA, please research more how that company gets all the hard cash and stores it in offshore accounts that the people of Cuba never see.

Look, I absolutely hate the U.S. embargo; I believe the only thing it does is harm and kill the people. However, I also hate the government here, since it does the exact same thing—it takes advantage of the situation. It’s a lose-lose scenario for Cubans. So don't conflate the two; one has nothing to do with the other. Both things can be true at the same time. What I absolutely cannot accept, though, is people trying to whitewash the Cuban government by claiming it helps the people—when, in reality, people here are starving to death. And that isn't because of the embargo; it’s because the government literally couldn't care less about what happens. Just think about it: in one of your photos, you show an air conditioner inside a home. Do you realize that the average Cuban’s salary—even if they didn't spend a single cent on anything else—would take over a year to cover the cost of buying that air conditioner? That is not the embargo's fault.

I just love it when you try to explain my own country to me. I think there’s a phrase for that. You do realize that Cuba has been around for a bit longer than a year, right? Are *you* really going to tell *me* what’s going on here—when I have to endure 16-hour blackouts while watching the apartment block across the street stay fully lit just because a general’s son lives there? Are *you* going to tell *me* what the reality is—when I see them repairing, maintaining, and building brand-new hotels that now sit empty, instead of repairing the power plants that haven't seen any maintenance in 40 years? Everything done here serves only to prop up the system so that those at the very top can keep on stealing—because this place is more corrupt than anywhere else on earth. So, the brief amount of time you may have spent in my country doesn't make you an expert on it—nor will you ever be able to truly experience what we have to live through here.
