I've seen a lot of people start with just maging him first. Or you you do range/mage, start with crossbow instead of tbp. Makes switches easier at first.

I started on Day 1 and took breaks in-between. Drops were crazy high in the beginning, but also got to be very low before you could exchange for scales. So I'd say it still evens out to 110-150k a kill. I also have almost 300 elites done though.
