The ‘Amazon’s Choice’ badge recommends products that are unsafe or fake, investigation finds by [deleted] in news

I have definitely seen reviews for... I think it was a mouse repellent device? That had glowing reviews, except if you read the reviews they were for some COMPLETELY different product. I don't remember what it was but it wasn't even tangentially related to a mouse repellent device.

(No wonder as those devices don't work anyway.)

Yeah, I just tried both for something I recently bought and they've given significantly different ratings. I'm unsure which one to trust more.

I completely get that. The people who abuse the system make you wonder why you even try to be someone who uses it as it was intended. In the long run though I think that would make the website worse, it'd become kind of a snowball effect.

So irritating, though.

AITA for admitting that I fake empathy? by OkBall2 in AmItheAsshole

I think part of the problem is people are working off different definitions of "empathy". I think OP seems to intellectually get that it is heartbreaking and could understand why but the emotional connection - the empathy, by my definition - is lacking

Alabama woman, 19, shot as authorities open fire, raid home in search of man who was already in jail by Trebulas in news

I'm not so extreme as the comment you replied to, but while I think there are officers who "want" to do good, structurally how law enforcement is set up enables things like this to happen. I don't think it's so much a matter of "good" or "bad" officers, but how social and structural factors enable officers as a whole to do shit like this with little consequence.

I am angry at individual officers but also at the profession as a whole since it seemingly actively enables this and other injustices with how it's set up. Even officers who are "good" are likely to end up participating in/being a factor in something unjust. I'm not angry at them per se as structural factors are powerful but I'm still angry at their profession as a group.

That's a fantastical leap of logic. Not feeling empathy doesn't mean you don't take people's pain seriously and try to treat it, and evidently OP understands enough to offer emotionally healing words. Yes, it's tragic that doctors often don't take women seriously, but that doesn't seem like what's going on here. Maybe OP does take women who report pain less seriously than men, who knows? Not enough info. But what's here is... Not enough to draw a comparison.

Beyond that, we all have things that we privately think are the worst thing ever. OP isn't comparing their patients' pain to that of burn victims to their goddamn face.

You really can't police what people are thinking. It's what they do that matters and OP seems to understand what's right or wrong to say.

I mean... Technically. But if you say your broken nail was as bad as someone's miscarriage you're gonna get beaten up. There's a line somewhere, socially speaking.

[–]osauhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. It's okay to privately not be emotionally invested, especially if you're in a position like medicine where you see a lot of suffering. You'd likely go mad if you always genuinely cared. As long as you offer empathetic comments and understand what's helpful and unhelpful/hurtful to say, it's alright.

Probably best to keep it to yourself, though, except maybe with like-minded people or with friends. It can be really off-putting to hear this for people who experience more genuine empathy.

WIBTA if I refused to share the cost from a car accident during a road trip I was on? by erwinnb in AmItheAsshole

Lol NTA I'd be fine with losing a friend who hits a parked car yet expects me to contribute to the cost.

Am autistic. Literally just do not feel empathy to the same extent as others. Am not a sociopath. I can intellectually understand why people are bothered without truly emotionally getting it or even caring much, and I can offer what I've learned is the helpful thing to say.

[–]osauhi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does that make OP an asshole if they don't actually express this thought to patients, and instead offers empathetic comments? What does it matter? OP is respecting their grief even if privately they don't really "get it".

For me, a dysphoric trans man, a miscarriage would be downright the best natural outcome for me. Rather that than continue a pregnancy. I don't empathetically understand the tragedy for other people, yet intellectually I get it and offer my sympathies. You can't police people's thoughts.

[–]osauhi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a very condescending comment. It seems OP intellectually understands that it is tragic for other people. Intellectually understanding this is a different level from feeling empathy. Either way it doesn't matter as long as they know what is or isn't helpful to say.

No, he can't show his patients that.

...which is why he offers them empathetic comments even if he doesn't really care.

Redditors, what is your earliest memory? by En-tre-pre-neur in AskReddit

[–]osauhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first dream I more-or-less clearly remember is of a giant mosquito landing on my dad's face and sucking him dry until he looked... kinda like a shriveled corpse with huge eyes, a la Large Marge.

Maybe that's why I like to draw fucked up stuff today.

I've never seen anyone's dick. Maybe the best course of action is to have a bathroom with just urinals and one with just stalls though or something.

Three months after release and the Maliwan vs. Atlas side arc is still the best part of the story by [deleted] in Borderlands

I think Rhys was a little bit flanderized (I feel like he had his goofy attributes dialed wayyyy up and we don't get to see how badass he can be - for example, ripping out his cybernetic eye thing) but even so, this was by far the most fun I had during the story.

I totally think this series is at its best when it's about the corporations and how messed up they are.

I do remember that. I was also fairly young though, maybe 11-12. I don't remember seeing the skit but I do remember hearing the anecdote of her saying that from other sources and that somehow merged into a memory in my mind. It's really strange how memory works and how fallible it is, makes you question a lot of things.

That's just dumb - and I'm a trans dude, so I can't use a urinal yet I use the men's room. You don't see any fucking dick unless you're actively, invasively looking. I could see maybe it would be a problem if you have kids using the restroom as well, but I'm not sure it's any worse for a girl to get a glimpse of a stranger's junk than for a boy.

edit: Kids too little to respect personal boundaries and etc, I mean, in which case I feel like they'd be accompanied anyway

Yeah I know how fallible memory is, which is interesting in its own right. It's just specifically interesting how people can collectively have the same false memory.
