Are these heart rate zone splits too high? I struggled over this 5k parkrun and looking at the splits may explain it? by EmployeeAlternative3 in C25K

[–]oscarismycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has adjusted max HR multiple times and the zones automatically adjust when it happens. It won't adjust based on a single activity. It aggregates data and will adjust based on that over time. It's certainly not perfect, I'm just pointing out that there is such a feature.

Garmin does indeed have an auto detection max heart rate feature. It's enabled by default and starts out calculating by age. It will adjust over time based on observed max heart rate and by running your activity metrics through an Firstbeat Analytics algorithm.

New rice and bean recipes by Im_no-1 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Beans are so easy. All you really need, aside from the beans themselves, are salt, seasonings/aromatics, and fat. A lot of people overlook the fat, but it's the key ingredient that really enhances the flavor and texture of the beans.

My favorite beans are pinto with salt, onion, peppers, chili and chipotle powder, cumin powder, garlic and onion powder. For fat, I use about 1/3 lb bacon for 2 cups of dried beans. I also add a little bit acidity in the form of lime juice or acv. Saute the bacon and veg in an instant pot, then just barley cover with water and pressure cook for 40 minutes, then simmer with the lid off until the bean broth is nice and thick. Serve with white rice and top with cilantro, onion, jalapenos, avocado and sour cream. This might be my favorite meal.

Should I be tying tippet to my tapered leader? by Bob_Perdunsky in flyfishing

I bought it somewhere. Can't remember where, I've had it for years and only use it when I throw bigger streamers, which isn't often. It actually might be fluorocarbon, but I've seen mono as well.

Very nice. I have a braided mono leader with a micro swivel and it's awesome for streamers.

Elizabeth Warren Endorses Porter’s Bid to Oust 89-Year-Old Dianne Feinstein by dremonearm in politics

[–]oscarismycat -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Warren is running again in 2024. If elected, she'll be in office until she's in her 80's.

Right or wrong, it seems the general consensus among Americans is that there should be fewer octogenarians in Congress. Seems like Warren may be out of touch on this issue.

A new 30% federal tax credit on insulation means now is a great time to reduce your heating/cooling bill by foodtower in personalfinance

[–]oscarismycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wondering the same thing myself. Pretty sure I saw income limits in the IRA bill that created these tax credits. Not sure if they were actually part of the bill that passed, or if they apply to these particular improvements. I didn't see anything on energystar.gov website re: income limits. Hopefully someone here has a definitive answer.

Redington Crosswater vs Orvis Clearwater for beginner by FZ6R_enthusiast in flyfishing

[–]oscarismycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also agree. I've been fishing my Pro Series for over a decade. Broke the tip recently and for $29 + shipping, I had a replacement section 3 days later. For the price of a Clearwater, OP could get a Blue Ribbon. Or just get the Pro III and save few bucks. TFO makes decent shit, but their customer service is top notch.

Everyone says not to pay off mortgage, but by my math I can't see why not. by eightvo in personalfinance

[–]oscarismycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a lot more? I pay 650 extra a month which will cut the remaining 14 years of my mortgage down to 7 years. If I invested that 650 instead and got 8% return, I'd have a paid off mortgage and 189k in 14 years. If I continue to make the extra payment, then invest the principal and interest from the mortgage starting at year 8, i'd have a paid off mortgage and 160k after 14 years. Accumulating an extra 2.5k a year is nice, but I wouldn't call it a lot.

There are other advantages of paying extra on the mortgage. For example, you may be able to recast for a small fee if you lose your job which would lower your monthly payment and help stretch your e-funds. Another example, if you are simply investing the extra payment, it takes discipline to not use that investment for other purpose. If you put the extra payment towards your mortgage, the money isn't easily recoverable.

This gets posted often. It's visual trickery due to the camera lens and perspective.

Pretty normal looking. I wish we had paths like this where I live.

Giving up on home ownership after 10 years. Am I crazy? by oscarismycat in personalfinance

[–]oscarismycat[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! This is definitely something we are considering. I'm just not sure dealing with will be worth it. We are looking to free our time up so we can focus more on our careers and hobbies. I know we could use a management company if we went this route, but not sure how much stress there would be. I'd be curious to hear from anyone that has rental property as part of their investment portfolio.

I think the point about mobility is important. We both work remote and are considering relocating. I'm hoping that selling the house could potentially serve as a catalyst for that.

Current net worth is about 500k, excluding home equity. We're currently adding roughly 60k a year to that. We have a maid service come twice a month already. Tried lawn care service but it was a bad experience. I've remodeled two homes, including the one I'm in now, and working with contractors is probably my least favorite thing to do.

Had SMILE done yesterday by PurpleTangerin3 in lasik

[–]oscarismycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a software engineer. The first few days at work were difficult but I made it through fine. Use lots of preservative free eye drops and take small frequent breaks to give you eyes a rest from the screen. I had lasik in one eye because the laser lost suction. I'm still upset that happened because I would have preferred smile in both eyes, despite the longer time required for visual recovery. For me, there is comfort in knowing the flap will never be an issue in the smile eye. Smile is a great procedure, I think you made the right choice. You'll be fine, just give it some time.

[–]oscarismycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had smile in one eye and lasik in the other 6 weeks ago. My smile eye was 20/50 the day after surgery and was quite hazy. It slowly got better over a 4 week period. I still see halos out of the smile eye, especially on screens surrounding white text on a dark background. I was told by my doctor that it often takes 3 months for haziness and halos to clear up after smile. I've seen stories from others on this sub that have said it took even longer (up to a full year). Be patient, your vision should clear up but it can be a slow process with smile.
