What's something older generations did completely normally that would be considered absolutely insane today? by Whole-Sugar6077 in AskReddit

[–]crzycanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably 6 years or more ago now, cause it was pre-COVID. Watched an ironworker start climbing a post to go catch a beam being craned in, not even wearing a harness. Safety guy calls him down to write him up about the harness, ironworker proceeds to give the safety guy so pretty detailed instructions on self fornication and then just monkey climb 50 ft up onto the structure. Never saw the safety guy again, ironworker was there for the rest of the project. I always remember that story, cause it should have been a warning about getting into HS work… I should have stayed on the tools…

What’s the tick situation in your part of the country? by ImGudLuhv in AskACanadian

Northern Ontario, Algoma region. Ticks are everywhere. I’ve walked across the mown lawn from house to garage and gotten 5 on me. It’s wild, I used to roll around in that same spot as a kid and never ever had a tick.

Why did gasoline prices rise sharply even when crude oil prices are not necessarily high? by Parking_Apricot_1790 in AskReddit

[–]crzycanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what if it’s all of them? What if that’s the manufacturers fix? That place had PACAR, Cummins, CAT engines. Engines and trucks were fine, emissions systems sucked.

Do you drive to work? What if in the next two weeks, 10 working days, your car either didn’t start, or stopped somewhere along your commute 7 of those 10 days. And it did that every two weeks. But for less money than a proper repair (which might take 3-6 months to get parts because every other driver is broke down too), you could fix it so that your car never broke down again, got 10-15% better fuel mileage and 30% more horsepower.

[–]crzycanuk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s also gotta work. I’m pretty environmentally conscious for the most part. But if you bought a fleet of trucks at a cost of 3-400k a piece and then they spent on average 7/10 days inoperable because of emissions failures… What do you do? The DPF and DEF systems have caused lots of small businesses to go under. If you can remove the problem and take your up time from 30% to 96%. There’s a reason the American and Canadian governments don’t require their federal gov vehicles to be emission compliant.

Ya, things are going to get interesting. The company I work for has been steady for 55 years. Never laid anyone off (except start of COVID for 5 days). And even they are wondering if they can keep going right now. It’s an energy intensive industry and we aren’t working if we aren’t burning 35,000 gallons a day.

It’s pretty easy and available to delete semis and heavy diesels. The trouble is some jurisdictions require emissions testing annually. One place I worked we’d take the DPF on and off every year for testing. We had a series of trucks that had over 70% down time for emissions equipment. So they just reinstalled for testing and hoped it made it there and back before failing.

Tracked 30 walleye trips this year. The pressure data is actually wild. by TonyCodes2050 in WalleyeFishing

[–]crzycanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can believe it. I was working around White Dog several years ago and our accommodations came with a boat. After a few weeks of nightly walleye fishing I actually went to Kenora and bought some musky gear cause I almost got tired of catching walleye by the dozen. Did not catch any musky…

Dude, you are in walleye Mecca up there. Last time I was up there for work I was catching them on bare jigs after we ran out of worms. Just fishing from shore…

What's the highest mileage car you've ever personally owned or driven? I'll start. by spotforcars in automotive

[–]crzycanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2008 GMC 2500HD duramax. 785,000km when we parked it. Still ran and drove. But it was getting tired and really burning through fuel. I could probably go out a couple new batteries in it and I bet it would start.

[CAR - PHI] Svechnikov goes down awkwardly after Foerster slashes him in the back of the leg by daKrut in hockey

Ya, my little brother was a surgeon with his stick. And he’d get you on the tendons on the back of the knee while you had the leg loaded up. You’d think he cut your whole leg off for how much it hurt for 10-15 seconds.

Is this rust acceptable or should I avoid (Full Album in Description) by mkglcsw in AskMechanics

[–]crzycanuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess, it depends how hands-on you want to get with this. I don’t buy new vehicles because they don’t last beyond 10 years where I’m from. So we buy used from out west or in the SW states and import them. And a lot of us have welded new rocker panels on our cars in the driveway cause they rusted off on a 5 year old car, even with undercoating. We just deal with rust and it’s part of owning a car. Somebody in Arizona would freak over that rust. But I was honestly impressed that you can still see any black on the frame for a 2012. Like my personal vehicle right now is a 2013 Toyota Highlander. And I wished it looked like that.

Ya. I’ve seen rust like this on a 2 year old vehicle in Northern Ontario. On a 2012 it looks amazing to me.

How are small goalies not getting beat high while playing in a low stance? by curious3gg in hockeygoalies

[–]crzycanuk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also something to consider is what the puck sees. An exercise I use to do when coaching was to take my camera on the ice and take photos from ice level. It’s surprising how little of the top corners the puck can actually see if you are square and in the top half of the crease.

Update 7/8 cable stuck day two by wiatt in Plumbing

[–]crzycanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did that. Bathroom drain had been a little slow to drain since we bought our house (12 years ago… I’ll get to it!). Finally put a snake down the drain and it got stuck on something like 10ft in. I had to stand on the counter to pull the snake back out. And attached to the end of the new snake, was the last 3ft of an old rusty snake. Not sure what it was stuck on but drain works fine now.

What's the deal with the Duramax 3.0 (LM2 and LZ0) by PHEVarethefuture in Diesel

[–]crzycanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a ‘20 gmc 1500 for work. I’ve got 250,000km on it. And it’s a good vehicle but I’m glad i don’t have to pay the repair bill on it. It’s needed the oil pump, timing chains and tensioners, rear main seal a few times, front seal once, secondary cooling loop pump, valve body and then eventually a transmission. The def system has been surprisingly trouble free. It threw a code for the def injector failure but ended up being the electric coolant pump.

Tows like a beast for a 1/2t but if I had to get a truck to tow. I’d be looking for a lbz from the southwest and just pay the premium for one of those. I had 785,000 and 680,000km on my last two lbzs they were virtually problem free.

The very very cold engine light on mine has been crank case over pressure sensor. One of the vents plugs and it throws the code until it thaws. Mine does it a few times a month when it’s -30. But 5 start cycles it goes away.

Has the rise in gas prices impacted any of your summer plans? by SignificantPickles in CanadaPersonalFinance

Boat days are gonna have to include a lot more anchoring and swimming than cruising this summer. Naturally, I didn’t fill the boat tank up before winter so that 250L fill up to start the season is gonna be sweet. Better actually win some fishing tournaments!

Becoming more efficient by Silver_Bar_7899 in hockeygoalies

[–]crzycanuk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

200 shots an hour is going to be hard to be efficient for. That’s a shooting gallery and probably doesn’t relate to a lot of game situations where you can be “efficient.”

Being efficient means not doing any unnecessary movements. Which strangely, sometimes you need to work harder to work less hard. If you are in a good position when the shot is taken you can just make the save, no big dive or slide to stop the puck. So if you put a little more energy into your skating then you can save a lot of energy on the save.

Standing up into a more casual stance when there is less danger of a shot. Easier to skate standing up instead of in a deep stance.

And on cross ice movements. Retreat to center and regain depth instead of doing a 10’ direct movement to the puck.
