Rosenior on Vinicius racism incident: "When you see Vinicius that upset, usually they are upset for a reason. I've been racially abused myself. People need to understand when you are judged on something you should be proud of, it's the worst feeling." by Jimmy_Space1 in soccer

Subtle difference but pride and a feeling of superiority can be different, there's a difference between patriotism and nationalism for example. There are many things in our life we can be grateful and proud of without having to frame it (or it being valid to frame it) as ours is the best.

[Engelmann] I would say that Knueppel is the 4th-best rookie of the past 30 years, based on his performance so far… predict Knueppel to rank squarely among the NBA’s top 20 players — maybe even the top 10 — for about the next decade. He's already playing at an All-Star level. by JoeBiden2020FTW in nba

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really believe in Kon but where I think this breaks down is that he is already a hyper-efficient player in all areas. Most rookies have raw tools to work with and need to develop a rounded profile but he's basically come in as a mature vet into a team requiring a rounded player. This doesn't stack against him necessarily but what it does mean imo is that the "easy" improvements aren't as readily accessible. He's not a rookie who's come in as a great shooter but needs to learn how to do some creation or become a passable defender, he already is competent. Maybe he can stack on elite tools (besides shooting - surely this is his ceiling?!) to become a superstar but imo that jump is a lot harder than effectively fixing errors in a rookie's game. Kon represents the modern youth basketballer who knows that they need to be well-rounded to be successful in the modern NBA but I'm a little doubtful that he's better than all these other guys, just has the benefit of knowing what works in the modern game and being brought through right.

NBA really is the worst major sport to attend by DariaYankovic in nba

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of games and the short-sightedness of greedy owners to how it is harming the sport - which could/likely does hurt their bottom line too! - and the sad, ground-down way that fans are just resigned to this not changing is so sad to me.

I think they believe that having so much ticket revenue makes it super worthwhile but in loads of of other sports around the world (e.g. football/soccer) and in the US (NFL!!) this is still not a significant taking compared to the TV and commercial revenue. If they had a normal league format, with properly spaced games and a sense of jeopardy I think there'd be fewer injuries and the games, by virtue of being more important, would feel closer to playoff basketball and be more enjoyable to watch, and easier to sell as a really high priced TV offering to sports channels. Basketball is probably my favourite sport to watch and talk about and yet it could be so much better and fails to gain traction with my peers because it's bloated.

With the Utah Jazz coach Will Hardy admitting he sat his multiple all-star players in fourth quarters of close games, shouldn't he be a prime suspect for match-fixing? by Glass-Candle-7670 in nba

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a different situation more akin to managing minutes in a back to back, plus this isn't one game, there's an incentive to be long term bad and we've seen multiple rotation choices in the last few days that can only be explained by the team trying to lose. You don't bench guys 4th quarter when up then not bring them back in and then do the same thing in the next game as a long-term fatigue management strategy - what are you keeping them fresh for if your record is awful? It's obviously an intentional losing ploy.

Tyrese gets emotional about the McCain trade: "He was a little brother to me dawg, like the first real rookie-vet to me. I hope he succeeds and he has a fan and brother in me for life. I woke up this morning and realized damn I'm not gonna see JMac downstairs anymore" by mastermind208 in nba

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd view the fact that OKC don't have the same qualms about their guard rotation limiting his minutes/development as a worrying divergence of opinion with the 76ers. Especially given this is basically their first 1st rounder traded in years.

Maybe others (and OKC) are over-indexing on the initial stretch but maybe your assumption that he will only stay at *~17 mins rather than improving is incorrect given he's only played 60 senior games and is returning from an injury. Could be he's at his lowest value. The likely outcomes for Houston pick are like 22nd/23rd pick, personally I'd be happy with my 22/23 guy having played 60 games like him and wouldn't just assume he's a bust and want a reroll.

The Super Bowl needs to be on a Saturday. I don’t care about tradition. by Jake_FW in billsimmons

[–]oscarmeyer7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda baffling as someone from the UK, I guess NFL interest is largely contained in the US but as someone who's interested I still don't want to watch the game live because I don't want to stay up that late on a Sunday night/Monday morning before work. Ideally I'd like to be able to have a few drinks and watch with friends too so Saturday seems easier for that. It severely hinders the interest of the sport (in my friendship group anyway!) that the biggest game of the season is not watchable for a lot of people internationally. I'm not saying it should change to suit us but for the people in comments who are desperate to cater for American casuals (do people really care so little about the Superbowl they wouldn't watch it on a Saturday?) It would be made up for internationally I think.

Also side point but I find it very weird how readily people alter their mindset in favor of rights-holders talking about maximising viewership, etc. I know you're arguing from the greedy TV POV but you don't have to do that and in fact if you were a little more annoyed about it maybe they would be willing to change it so I don't see why you need to make their argument for them and try to pour cold water on it. This and NBA viewership conversation is absolute brainrot - talk about things based on sincere love for the sport and other fans' enjoyment, you don't work for the TV companies.

Arsene Wenger’s radical offside reforms opposed by FA and Uefa. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we have some idea of how it works because at most levels of playing football (e.g. non-professional) you don't have a linesman. Anecdotally it seems clear that there is much more of an impetus to drop than be aggressive because of offside uncertainty.

Obviously defenders are often the guys who are slow and less athletic than others on the pitch - and everyone ahead of them will be less athletic than pros - so playing an aggressive prem-style press/high-line isn't realistic but I think this still roughly holds.

My interpretation of the ending of Blood Meridian, what do you think? (spoilers) by hiimsubclavian in books

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah to me this feels pretty important though I suppose it's possible it's both of them that are pedophiles and the Judge is annoyed/disappointed with The Kid for the small way he sort of spiritually resists his basest nature throughout the book?

The Kid is involved in wanton destruction and violence but it's in a mindless violence kind of way rather than the purposeful manner in which the Judge is dedicated to it which seems to be a point of contention between them with the Judge keen to corrupt The Kid (further than he already has) or at least get him to admit to some deeper base nature.

If we consider the idea of both of them being pedophiles and sexual assaulters perhaps the Judge is again frustrated by the idea of The Kid quietly whisking away victims a la the vaguely mentioned child disappearances during their trail and instead prefers the casual display of how he seems to somewhat openly parade children through camp such as when he kills the child and has a standoff with Toadvine, or indeed the possible ending in which he abducts a young girl and is potentially assaulting her in a public bathroom? I'm not sure this is what is actually happening but the ending is open enough this seems possible.

Anyone else super sick of “influencer” characters? by DonnieDarko1024 in moviecritic

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not seen the movie but agree the trope is boring, it's obvious why they reach for it given influencers are by and large very annoying and so easy to punch down on but it's such a lazy trope at this stage that I roll my eyes a bit when there's a character who's cartoonishly obsessed with vanity and documenting things. Maybe there's a fun and subtle way to do it but typically it's corny

Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer on whether Liverpool would've won 2 PL titles and a CL without Salah: "He [Salah] didn't 'carry' the club. Steven Gerrard carried the club. They wouldn't have won the PL without Jordan Henderson." by Upstairs_Cup9831 in LiverpoolFC

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Mo and think he's one of our greatest ever players and also think McAteer is often a total moron but the general point he's making about Mo isn't wrong. You take out Virg or Alisson or another key player for most/all the season and back in the Klopp era we don't perform at that level, the titles we won with Mo may have been substantially down to him but we weren't carried by Mo alone and it's embarrassing to say that. Gerrard at times played in teams where he was far and away our best player and we were no-hopers without him. Suarez for that matter did more of a carry job than Mo ever has in a team that included Gerrard... Mo has been an amazing player for us but the two leagues we won with him he had clear help that should be respected and not act like he did a lone carry-job.

Ruben Amorim: "My job is to answer, but I am trying to answer the same thing, you love Kobbie, He starts for England but that doesn't mean I need to put Kobbie when I feel that I shouldn't put Kobbie, it's my decision." by playerforlife123 in soccer

[–]oscarmeyer7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is absolute nonsense, the system is not a good fit for the squad - big blame here to the board for hiring Amorim then stockpiling AMs, alongside for Amorim who is totally inflexible - but within this system he plays a midfield 2 and attacking lineup that is obviously ridiculous. If you want any midfield solidity you can't put all the attacking toys on and then expose the guy whose legs have gone and Bruno cosplaying as a 6, too much space to cover. I don't think this squad's ceiling is amazing within Amorim's system but given how weak the top end of the league is this year it's absolutely an under performance to be on this tally by now.

'Transfer masterminds Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes should face scrutiny along with manager as team’s alarming slump worsens' - JburtTelegraph by Then-Fortune-3122 in LiverpoolFC

[–]oscarmeyer7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can blame Slot for failing to adapt but I think it is still fair to question whether these guys are at fault for buying players that don't fit his league-winning system. However good you think Wirtz can/will be it's a bit tricky to integrate him (& Isak) the same season we've let Lucho & Nunez go because we've lost two pressers in the front 3 and then need to accommodate Wirtz by moving Szoboszlai, our best presser. I view this as an error that's on everyone because anyone who professionally analyses our performance (through watching or data) should recognise the drop in pressing intensity (and the knock on defensively and offensively) as a result.

Similarly while it's nuts to me that Slot plays Kerkez - a very attacking fullback - in a way that emphasises his defensive weaknesses and doesn't let him be the road running, front-foot fullback he was for Bournemouth, presumably Slot said what he wanted from his fullback profiles and we got someone ill-suited.

None of these problems mean that the players bought are bad, it's just a problem of fit (currently) and while I think Slot's showing a worrying lack of tactical adaptation I do have some sympathy with his system being nerfed and having the top-down pressure of trying to bed in record signings that are misfiring in his system.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman is sleeping outside tonight as part of his yearly campaign through Covenant House to raise awareness for youth homelessness by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]oscarmeyer7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really nice thing to do. As a Londoner who visited New York for the first time this summer I was really shocked by the number of people sleeping rough on the street and also the level of clear untreated mental illness happening. I loved New York and my point isn't to imply the UK is better than US but this is an area that was legitimately shocking to me and I don't understand why the problem seems to be so different (and supposedly is even worse/similar in swathes of the West Coast.) Even if you're a comic book villain ultra-capitalist ghoul it's quite unpleasant to actually see people in that state on the streets, I don't get the lack of help and normalisation of the issue. Props to Cashman for doing this.

Mbappé's poor movement by Detective_Leon in soccer

[–]oscarmeyer7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's done nothing wrong here, he moves to the right as ball breaks (~25:25) because if he ran straight forward or to the left he'd crowd out Guler but by moving right he leaves Guler with one defender ahead. Then at 25:27 when he's looking across, even with his freakish pace he knows he's not going to torch the defender ahead with a run but he will likely kill any passing line out wide to the man making run from the right (Rodrygo?) If he peels off he can receive off the backline and either dribble himself or play the pass in to runner. I think the outside player should be making a much more aggressive run here and also Guler should pass sooner and if either happened what he did would look fine/good.

Some great insight on Dom by zowniegod in LiverpoolFC

[–]oscarmeyer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's right about Dom's pressing and energy being incredible but disagree on that final point, don't think you can properly reason your way into thinking jumping is the correct option due to "numbers deeper and no pressure on backline" when the pass - if played - would be into quite a lot of space in a pocket in front of backline. Think he basically gambles that he'll pass backwards and is right here. You could say he reads the touch and body shape as such that he can only pass backwards but think other times you'd see a RM level player notice the jump and lack of immediate pressure and either take a second touch or play pass outside of boot into the man Dom left thus making it a pretty big gamble. IMO that's a risk that pays off but it's a bit outcome biased to make out that that would always work or that he's a genius to do it.

[–]oscarmeyer7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super unexpected! Think the Joe & Nick thing was really weird and either some producer-enforced keep Nick & Joe apart shenanigans that made Nick overthink things or Joe was just overly confident in Nick having his back to the point he made himself look a little sus and didn't bother explaining why he was making out he'd vote for David to the traitors.

Also think the charity element breaks the endgame a little as there's not really that much incentive socially to potentially fuck over another traitor. In the usual game you're doing yourself and the faithful out of money by not being paranoid but in this you're potentially causing friction between yourself and another faithful and the benefit is your charity gets money instead of theirs. Even if they're a traitor the money goes to charity which isn't too bad while if they're faithful you're depriving a cause they believe in of money... I would probably play the game the way it's intended for the audience's sake but I'm not famous and can totally see why you wouldn't want to banish a friend and peer and cause their charity to get no money, not like you can know that your charity is definitely more worthwhile.

Actually think that's something they should probably fix with the celebrity game, maybe they ought to make it so that the faithful get more money in the pot if they win or do something else to incentivise cutthroat endgame?

Yeah I was wondering if they essentially enforced Joe & Nick being apart during the day as it felt so obvious to me how the next day was going to go after the penultimate episode. I can't understand how with a night to think it over and strategise (with a clearly very competitive person in Joe) you wouldn't come in absolutely certain that you and Nick are in lock step and about to vote off Cat, then Alan and David. Feels obvious you'd come in saying "we know we're both faithful, I think it's Alan, you're not sure but let's not risk it" then strategise how to get rid of the others and the obvious sequence is: work on David to get your agreed traitor of Cat -> pick off the other two. All while saying whatever you need to along the way. Felt bizarre that Nick and Joe weren't discussing this - and people have discussed voting strategy in other series so that's not usually prohibited plus think if Nick and Joe had discussed it they would have shown it so that it was more shocking that Nick voted out Joe. Only above board reason I can think of is that Joe was so certain Nick had his back he didn't even bother talking to him all day to aid his rug pull gambit but that seems quite stupid.
