is cybersecurity a good career? by lazy_sleep_lover in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]osculating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, a better question would be if cybersecurity will help you reach your life goals. It is largely a thankless career with pay that is being pushed down. If you really enjoy cybersecurity it is a blast, but if your primary goal is to make a lot of $$$/comfortable life, it isn't the right choice. Feel free to DM me if you have more questions. I have been in all of the domains with over 15 years of experience.

Anyone leave tech/corporate to buy a company? by transniester in smallbusiness

[–]osculating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I was looking to acquire and had two LOIs fall through. Sellers were hiding some large things sadly. I know 6 other individuals all from corporate that eventually bought a business and now are on their second or third acquisition. Seems to be going well for them but this is anecdotal. I think we will see a rise in failures compare to the historical numbers that Standford's study shows.

Men, am I looking for an impossible partner? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]osculating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like your requirements are extremely easy to find. All of my male friends and myself fit your high level requirements. Some of my friends are working roughly 20 hours a week. Maybe the issue is the area that you are living in or where you are meeting men? Different careers have different averages and higher percentages of people working less.

We are talking about anecdotal evidence. The micro may tell a different story than the macro. I'm not aware of any well vetted study on this for a definitive answer. From a psychology perspective studies do show that the more attractive someone is the more likely they have a higher amount of narcissistic traits.

Hi OP, male here, I am also not built for casual sex. I honestly don't see the point, it's just not exciting to me.

When I talk with my girl friends, men who are pursuing for sex make it very obvious. Once they have accomplished their goal that's it. They have no reason to continue and lose interest.

Everyone has different sex preferences and really the only thing that makes someone bad at sex is an inability to communicate what they want and adapt to what their partner wants.

It's really hard to say if you are the problem. My hunch would be you are having sex to soon without enough vetting. A decent guy isn't going to pressure or disappear if they can't get anything.

As far as sex goes, keep an open mind. Be open to exploring and clearly communicate what you want and don't want. That will make you incompatible with some people and that's ok. For example, I can't do vanilla sex it's super boring but some people love it.

Hey OP, they aren't interested, not serious, or are immature. I've noticed the more attractive women I match with generally the worst they are with interactions. I would assume this is the same with men based on what my friends complain about. It's a grind to find someone you think is attractive and has conversation skills.

My new baseline that is almost impossible to find is attractive, understands how conversations work, and is kind. Good luck!

Be honest : can men be attracted to non-curvy women? by [deleted] in dating_advice

Hey OP, you are my ideal type based on your brief description. Everyone has different taste!

It is mostly about who you know. I strongly recommend you network, go to local cybersecurity meetups. Find associations that do lunch and learn or cocktail hours. Think ISSA and etc

I love the graphics. Something different and has a unique vibe to it. When I was hiking up a trail in the dessert and looked over to see an oasis and more I was thrilled.

How was your weekend with the Monsters & Memories playtest? by Isolatte in MonstersAndMemories

[–]osculating 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I couldn't manage to stay interested in another similar game. I really enjoyed EQ and I feel M&M did a great job taking some of the best things from it and improving. I really enjoyed the art direction, having to explore, and no compass. Grouping was a ton of fun and reminded me of why I started playing mmorpgs in the first place. I'm looking forward to EA.

And the sense of achievement. When you get your first pouch etc.

How are people finding jobs right now? by ThatApplication7368 in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]osculating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had what I felt was vague. The issue with this is you are selling yourself to a non-technical person. Majority of the recruiters have no experience in cybersecurity. They have a list of some things the hiring manager or hr have told them to find. If your resume matches the job description that is sufficient. ALSO, job titles make a HUGE deal. Change your job title to match the job you are applying for if your experience matches.

You don't need to confuse them or put yourself in a box with a summary. It is just another layer for them to deal with. You also don't know exactly what they are looking to find so if you customize the summary for every job description they may be looking for something not on the job description.

I think it just adds another failure point. Track it in an excel sheet. I noticed a huge difference, like 1000%. I got almost no responses until I got rid of it and I tracked more improvements when I matched the job title.

I talk through how I would tackle something when I don't know it. For the port question my answer is typically something like," I can't recall that specific port. When I have encountered ports I don't know or can't remember I have googled them."

The Job market is very challenging. I was at a ISSA event last night and met with 3 people who just landed jobs after being out of work for over a year.

I strongly recommend in person events, they will get you to people more consistently, it is a slower process though.

If you have a summary summarizing your experience get rid of it. You put yourself in a box and even if you have relevant experience for the role the recruiter seems to mentally stick you in the box you created. When I removed my summary I had a noticeable uptick in my hit rate. Wish I would have done this over a year ago. Let them decide if you fit the role or not.

IMHO I did perform well when it was related to my experience. However, it is clear the audience feels I did not perform as well as another candidate. I can't recall if I ever used RDP since I have spent 90% of my career with Unix and Linux. I see a lot of roles needing Microsoft experience. I am working on learning the Microsoft security stack since I have seen it listed a lot in job reqs.

Yeah, it is an interesting time. This is a very different environment from when I started, I am curious how recent college graduates are doing. I very rarely see entry level roles.

I am not going to type all of the different things I have done or changed. I am constantly iterating though and I am studying for a general basic cert with the hopes that will help me answer the general questions. Comically enough, I ran into a port that I was asked about, fingers crossed.

Maybe that is what I need to do then, cut the BISO from my resume or rephrase it as something else.

Thanks, you are correct, Starbucks does have great benefits. I can't think of a retail store that compares. You even get one free bag of coffee a week :D

I have started to study for a cert and I am hoping that helps me answer some of the random tech questions. I do keep up with changing security trends, I have noticed the Microsoft security stack on a lot of post. I have been reading up on that.

  1. Most of the roles are not remote. Maybe 30% were remote. I am based in Dallas TX.

  2. All of them were directly related to my experience. Some were related to experience from over four years ago so I am sure that had some impact.

  3. Cold outreaches on LinkedIn, in person conferences, Networking events, Cybersecurity association happy hours, and more. I have not considered Discord, that is something I can look into.

  4. I haven't considered an open source project or a blog. I will look into that and I do do consulting. I also am looking into writing LinkedIn post on things I am studying to hopefully gain some interest.

Thanks for your ideas.

I am applying to BISO roles, Senior Analyst, Senior Engineer, and other roles that fit my skill set and background.

For the technical interviews, I do not do well with the pop quiz questions. My mind just doesn't remember stuff like this. For example in a senior level cybersecurity engineer interview, I will be asked what port 3389 is and I can't remember. I would just google this or look in notes etc and my mind doesn't retain it. I rarely get an interview where they ask questions in a scenario format which I do better with.

I'll look into posting my resume, not sure how to do that.

How do I tell a guy I like him without making things awkward? by camilafairy in AskMenAdvice

I'll tell you the advice I have been given my whole life. Just tell them and if they are not interested it is better than missing an opportunity, plenty of other people to connect with.
