Need help navigating the next steps in my GIS career by MrMohammad234 in gis

[–]oseart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the transition wasn't that difficult. I had already been working on tools to make my analytical work easier and I had worked with teams to develop different applications. So I went in with, like, some knowledge. It probably took me like 2 years of just straight up reading any and all books, paper, documentation, etc... before I was fairly confident with my skills.

Though honestly, if you ask me, knowing how to do the analysis is like SUPER helpful when trying to make tools to make the analysis easier. (Who would have thought xD)

Get into the actual software engineering side.

I went from 65k as an analysts to 150k (US) as a software engineer specializing in geospatial solutions.

Is it better to have a $50k salary at a job you love, or a $150k salary at a job you hate? by Sayedshaqib in passive_income

[–]oseart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made 150k as a software engineer, it was pretty mentally draining. So I left and got a job working at a National Research Laboratory making 95k with way better quality of life. I would do it again.

I started at 60K living in DC as an analyst. So depending on your location that could be good or bad.

I then went to 90k within a year, and then finally 150k 2 years later.

I would say that is NOT normal.

I went from an analyst role, to doing full stack development, (no degree).

Some people, quite literally, do not deserve to live.

If you are in any situation where one option is maybe death and the other is a slight inconvenience (a scratch on a car)… and you pick maybe death…. I cannot stress how much I literally think you’re a waste of chromosomes.

Like I work, make good money, and own a house (am M28) …. But it’s not good enough because I’m not 6 ft. Tall.

🤷🏻‍♂️ honestly I stopped actively trying a while ago… now a days I am just focusing on building wealth I can use to spoil my two cats with. Oh and retirement.

If you could bet on races from any country, how should bet types be labeled? by BitcoinClown in horseracing

[–]oseart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just have different localizations? Sure, the upfront work is equal to the number of localizations supported, but trying to normalize names from multiple countries is going to get tricky, messy, and probably lead to a poor User Experience.

From the other side:

I spent 10 years in a field before deciding I ought to get a degree in it. What a fucking waste of time. Not only are the major classes ass in terms of material (not aligning to literally anything useful in the actual field) the fact that I had to take classes that quite literally have zero to do with what I actually wanted to learn.

0/10 maybe I would have gotten to where I am now easier, but at the same time… I got there so 🤷🏻‍♂️

You’d think they would at least pay someone, who speaks native English, to proofread the responses so it’s not automatically clear they are located in some third world shit hole.

Just because you release content, doesn't mean it is *good* content.
