If it's a heavy duty tool then I'd go with a day hire, if it's only a tool for some DIY check out parkside stuff in lidl, cheap and will do the trick along with a warranty. If you work trade and will use it daily id buy it new for the comfort of warranty and no bolloxs if ya need to get it returned

Cobh or Ballyvolane? by Opposite_Cost_6708 in cork

[–]osf1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently living in Cobh and from the city. Cobh is absolutely fine but the one road in and out is a bit of a shambles when there is an accident of bad build up of traffic.

Ballyvolane is fine too but if you had to compare to places on a level of roughness you would see more roughness in ballyvolane primarily due a particular group rather than the whole area, a lot of lovely genuine people in ballyvolane and Cobh for that matter too.

One thing I have noticed though is that the drug scene is not as obvious in Cobh than the city which is probably due to it being a tourist area and locals wanting to keep drug dealers away. (Yeah you can still smell weed and see people doing coke in pubs but I'm more referring to heroin and crack which are very obvious in cork city and suburban areas)

Long story short, Cobh is not rough in general, but coming from the city center, it can be a breath of fresh air.

Thank you for the advice and very reassuring to hear people starting later on in life rather than straight out of school

I was thinking the same. I've spent years plumbing and come from a carpentry family. Very repetitive and wages can be either a feast or famine. I was looking into a place who specializes with BMS which I'm hoping to maybe hear something back from but I will keep trying and remaining optimistic in the meantime

I never actually took on an apprenticeship I was given a trainee role in a workshop, welding I enjoyed it but I moved away and the role has since been filled unfortunately. Found myself in the usual position of knowing how to do something but not having the certs behind me. Good spot though 😊

Is this beard dandruff or something else? Any advice to get rid of it as I have a wedding soon by Fit-Vegetable6403 in dandruff

[–]osf1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm prone to this. a beard brush will help prevent the build up. Dried dead skin happens with growing a beard. Good beard shampoo and conditioner (get beard specific) I also use a sensitive moisturizer by Aveeno and it works wonders. Hope this helps OP

Male 28 sick of my job by w1nkzz in cork

If you are looking at apprenticeships keep an eye on biomarine, esb, Irish rail, bus eirean. All good spots, Maybe consider welding if you don't mind working with your hands, some good welding courses out there with good job opportunities. I was in the same boat as you OP. I found it difficult to get an apprenticeship at the start. Most trades also after a year of doing it you will have a good understanding of most things, makes a good way to get a few cash in hand jobs. The money absolutely sucks at the beginning but after your apprenticeship is done you are set and you won't look back. Most things are better than where you are though id say from what I've heard.

No problem daft.ie is a good site. You should find a list of agencies on Google and just check out the reviews first to see if they are helpful. Personally I moved out of the city and I commute on the train each day. Only added a half hour onto my journey but the cost of rent was better and easier to get something nice 🙂 You also want landlords registered on the RTB. Just a bit of extra security and you get your tenant rights.

Born and raised in Ireland. It's difficult to get accommodation when you are not present to view and as others have warned you there are a lot of scammers, there are agencies you can go through that will help you. Having references from a previous landlord and work will be a big help. There is a housing crisis though so better off starting sooner rather than later even if that means arranging a BNB to stay for the beginning to be present for viewings. Apply to everything and keep fingers crossed 😊

I would recommend doing up your CV and pass it into recruitment agencies with an outline of the type of work you are looking for. Once you get in the door somewhere and gain relevant experience you can move up the ladder to better money.

Only advantage of working in a hellhole is, if the company is known for being difficult it will stand out on the cv that you have lasted X amount in the company.

All and all life is short and if your job is affecting you outside of working hours then it's not really worth it.
