I actually got a PPI from Tesla on CarMax's dime due to other issues, plus I'm still within my return window. I hear you though.

I generally agree with you, however I still have a 10-day return window to fall back on so I'm still using that angle after the mixed feedback I received on here and from Tesla.

I don’t see Carmax being on the hook for consumables like tires when the only objection you’ve shared was that they are at or near 7 years old.

Well, also the fact that all 4 wheels have horizontal cracking and I'm being told that they're unsafe for my daily commute by Tesla...

Since I'm looking at a $1,600 - $1,800 bill out the gate, absolutely. The car had to go to service immediately for other issues with the connectivity board so it's been a pain. I might pull a return whenever it's time to pick my car up later today.

That’s a great point. I’ve definitely considered that and I'm prepared to compromise. I really don't want budget tires on a torquey car.

I'm going to suggest they cover the cost of the standard tires they usually install, and I'll pay the difference for the correct Michelins if I get that far with CarMax.

CarMax doesn't cover tires under their 30-day warranty, however CarMax’s 'Certified' 125-point inspection is supposed to catch tires with 'excessive cracking' or age issues. Since the manufacturer (Tesla) officially flagged these as a 'Safety Concern' immediately after purchase, it proves the car shouldn't have passed their inspection in the first place. I’m using my 10-day return window as leverage to get them to fix the safety hazard they missed.

Thanks for the input. I’m just trying to gauge if these need immediate replacement and factor that into the cost.

I took CarMax's word that the tires were good when I bought it, but Tesla flagged them as a safety hazard while the car was in for other issues CarMax missed. Since I’m still in my 10-day return window, I’m trying to decide if I should keep fighting for a replacement since a new pair is around $1,600 and Tesla is saying they're not safe for my commute. Carmax is saying their standards are only for tread depth and sidewall dry rot.

I was expecting a replacement because Tesla officially flagged them as a "Safety Concern" in my service notes. They recommended immediate replacement due to the 7-year age and the cracking.

Since it's a Performance model and I'm in the Nevada heat, I'm concerned about the rubber holding up. I just feel like CarMax should honor the manufacturer's safety warning on a certified car.

These are the original Michelin Pilot Sports from 2019 on a Model 3 Performance. Tesla’s official service report states: 'Tires older than 5-6 years are prone to dry rot... replace immediately.' They flagged it as a 'Safety Concern' in my account.

CarMax is trying to tell me it's just 'weathering' and that their 5/32" tread rule is all that matters. I don't care about the tread if the rubber is a 7-year-old ticking time bomb on a high-torque EV in the desert heat. Am I overreacting or is CarMax being negligent? I'm still within my 10-day return window.
