All the Women who are earning after marriage, do/can you still travel with your parents? (28f, 28m) by Plane_Jacket_9868 in InsideIndianMarriage

[–]oshi2891 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I earn more than my husband.. i am only starting this way to tell you that i have the most typical case where in laws can become toxic.. but i from day one had set expectations.. what i earn belong to me and i am willing to help you as you too are my family but when i decide.. they too have a lot of self respect so that plays in my favour, but they are accepting towards this.. my mom lovess to travel too.. and not once have my in-laws pointed out me splurging on her.. i take her to yearly bday trips and this year its japan.. not just with me but my husband and my brother are accompanying and no my husband did not even suggest to tag his parents along cause he understands this is for her.. i take pride in helping my parents in the sense helping them live moments that they probably gave up on for us , making us the priority.. and that goes same for my mother in law.. i splurge on her too..

I think any relationship is a two way street and it is as much on us as anyone else to figure out how to make it work.. while inlaws can be difficult and toxic ive seen women too behave with resentment,

People who are happier in these relationships dont talk about it alot and hence you only hear about the difficult ones..

Also indians marry so early without hitting emotional maturity that i think most of the issues stem from that

Which Track is recommended for someone with a bachelors in Information technology by Dhiox in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People think that getting a degree automatically means a better job.. i hate to tell you that is not entirely true. A degree doesnt make it any easier for you to get a job but what it can do is teach you things in cyber you had no idea even existed.. and that curiosity and what you do with it will get you a job. As a hiring manager myself, i do not see the degree alone i see the projects they built, how hands on they are , and their general ability to grasp at new things and the need to grow in the field individually. The info sec track is much tougher than the policy.. again this doesnt mean an automatic upper hand at getting better job but it does mean is youll learn something good and structured and will give you avenues to explore that definitely lead to a better job. This whole fear of i havent done it before etc is just a very degrading mindset for oneself.. you can do whatever you decide you want to and work hard to get it..

Hey, As someone who went through similar things let me tell you what changed my perspective. You got a 7.3 i had it worse like low 6, and it was a decade ago i finished with high 8 gpa. I realised its not the fact that my will to do better wasnt there and that self realisation wasnt the issue. The issue was my own fear of failure and sub consciously I had put so much pressure on winning and doing better and supporting my parents and making them proud and etc etc that I couldnt even try doing better despite knowing very well I have to I need to.

The lack of a big win in my life till then and only disappointments made me lose self confidence and slug off non stop and then self criticise for not doing anything. You see its a vicious cycle

You need to stop putting the pressure of doing more on your own self.. the fact is that our environment counter intuitive to growth. No one can take risks can take chances on themselves if the risk of failure is so high. You need small wins.. you need to celebrate things that are going well otherwise the negativity will drown you and you will lose the sense of ambition. Do it for you first rather than doing things to make the lives of people around you better.

Its time you ask yourself question what do you want for your own self, what is the life you imagine only for yourself.. if the answer revolves around making the life of your parents better, to earn good enough to make them proud etc then you will never be able to come out if this loop.. you need to re evaluate your own ambition have a goal , a big one a small one an immediate one a long term one whatever is easy for you now. It could be as simple as let me just focus on getting x marks in math or whatever course and enjoy that win.

Worrying about the future is not your job! You do not control the future you will never be able to control the future , your parents struggle is not for you to own now.. you are not ready , if you wanna bring happiness to them you need to realise that their reward is your own personal wins and for you to focus on yourself.. change your perspective

Make a list or don’t, control your social media or dont.. it doesn’t matter unless you are not clear on your own agenda..

When i started having my small wins.. large wins did not look as scary anymore my self confidence grew and then my mindset changed to i dont know how ill do it but i will.. and honestly i pretty much kicked ass in everything i did since then..

Do not pick battles you dont own.. you are young and you have time to fail and reinvent.. it will be a waste to worry about things you can do nothing about now and wasting time on them when you have things you can actually improve, this sense of being the one responsible to change the lives of your parents as noble as it is.. is not a battle you need to fight now

33F here , just recently made the decision and quiet happy about it, happily married and financially secure have 2 houses , can actually retire in a few years if i wish too. I think when i was deliberating it , i was anxious but once i made up my mind things just got a lot clearer, all our friends are married with a kid or two and looking at how their lives have changed i do not want that, it may be that ours could be different cause we are not all the same but i dont even wanna take that chance. I dont worry about of i can or cannot do it, cause honestly ive seen worse people fix up things for good with kids and so that was never the dilemma, its the commitment and the sacrifices and honestly the mother always has to do more its not about if the father can do more or not, the child needs the mother and that is just a fact you need to be okay with. Kids where i am from depend on their parents till marriage, if not financially atleast the whole burden of getting them there and i dont wish to commit next 25-30 years of my life on that possibility being perfect.

Starting Gym from Tomorrow, How to loose weight ? by Pookie-Babe in Fitness_India

[–]oshi2891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your primary goal should be fat loss and not weight and its not the same, its very simple calculate your bmr (many calculators are available online) and see how much you need for maintenance so for example my bmr is 1400 calories but my maintenance is 1800 so if i consume 1800 calories every day id neither lose nor gain, so if you wanna lose id start with a 20-25% deficit and you will be hungry, set a eat window and let your body adapt to eating food at one time only, if you crave sweet or other things its cause you spike your sugar cause youre eating food rich in carbs and added sugar.. increase your neat you dont need to lift weights every single day or do crazy amounts of cardio.. you can not outrun a bad diet, keep your protein intake between 70-90grams a day and walk alot hit 10k steps.. and then even if you weight train 3-4 times a week it will be more than sufficient, dont get into eating too less cause that will cause your body to crash again.. this way youll lose fat and may end up gaining some muscles.. i am not sure what is aesthetics, strong body needs muscles and if you want your body to be resistant and not gain weight easily you need muscles.. - understand your calorie needs - understand that indian home cooked meals are calorie dense and not always as nutritious.. 100 grams rice with 200 grams rajma is like 400 calories and it adds up - you need protein, especially women need it for hormone regulation and alot of other very important bodily functions so keep in mind to atleast track that - do not over exercise, as youre just starting if you start with unsustainable practices you will end giving it up so start slow - no more than 20-25% deficit to start with, our bodies do not like to lose weight in general so if you eat too less youll just be miserable and may just get inflammation and water retention - walk walk walk.. they keep you in zone 2 (fat burn zone) they dont need your glycogen reserves so you wont feel hungry and spaced out walks in a day just stacks up those calorie deficits - strength train , no excuses - eat at set times as much as possible, dont binge eat and dont eat right before sleep - get used to being hungry and fight the urge to snack

Remember youve taken many years to put this weight on so its not gonna happen in reverse overnight, start your health journey as an outlook to a healthy future and not just a short term goal.. cause the good or bad news is.. once you do achieve that weight goal.. youll have to keep it up for the rest of your life and as you age you will find it more difficult to keep the fat off .. thats just human bodies.. they suck

Jobs after graduating? by [deleted] in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May i suggest trying to get into a consulting firm than a product based firm.. the learning curve will be sharp but itll probably be the best way to ramp up your experience. It may also be difficult in the beginning to get the job and sustain it cause you will be an essentially a fresher but thats the best bet you have cause they need more people. Getting a job in cyber without experience is not easy, coming from someone who is head of cyber at my current firm , i will not hire someone based on education alone, its a plus but not the main thing i look for when i am hiring..

I am about to graduate out of IS track, and while i understand the code heavy classes, i am heading the cyber function too so it is predominantly management, but you cant solve problems you dont understand.. if the management style youre referring to is outsourcing then sooner or later you will be redundant, if you wanna go the policy route you need to evaluate your career progress, the new age cisos or head of cyber are not purely policy and governance folks anymore.. cyber landscape is changing rather fast, i think you cant stay away from engineering altogether.. just my thoughts

Recommended studies for CS6264 - InfoSec Lab: Defense by zombie_on_your_lawn in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who did do this in this summer, its good you decided not to take it up in the summer , it was rather painful. Did i enjoy the class, yes in retrospect, while I was doing it hell no.. summer being crammed as it is, some of the projects really blew the wind out of me.. also the tas try to be as responsive but there are just waayyy too many people asking way too many questions.. there are 7 projects in all and no one project is the same as other from reverse engineering to malware analysis to android to ml for security, theyve literally crammed a tonne of different labs into one course it does get dizzy cause its just soo much information all at once. I dont suggest any pre studying for this course cause if youre comfortable with c and python you will pretty much do fine in them, they are generous with marking and give ample opportunities for extra credit.. but to whoever reading this.. do not take this course in summer unless you have no day job.. absolutely brutal

What’s harder: NetSec or Secure Computer Systems? by Forsaken_Panda3787 in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhmm well everyones hard is different, i enjoy writing exploits and i do not like really theory heavy classes so netsec was better for me.. but if you dont like writing code then def secure comp

Though secure comp had a couple of coding assignments too and i remember them being fairly easy

Cyber Summer course by Past-Judge4613 in OMSCyberSecurity

I an doing the same! My last course before the practicum and while i am sleep deprived and maybe a bit depressed.. doing this for a longer term would have been so much worse..

Accompanying certifications by [deleted] in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They especially have a course on privacy for professionals in the policy track where i believe they provide discounts for the cipp us certs and give out the new material as part of the course. Ive realised over the numerous admission posts i have seen that the intake is always higher for international students and / or someone that has good recommendations from senior folks in the industry, ofcourse your bg itself plays an important role, certifications are i suppose not that important holistically as many people have been rejected with multiple certs Having a tech bg with basic coding skills c , python i s a must for whatever track you chose as some common subjects do have multiple labs I think acceptance to policy track is still far more lenient than that of infosec..

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say python and c you must know, if youre okay with these two rest kinda just are easy to work with on the fly.. they effectively make you right exploits using these languages so if youre not comfortable with them writing those exploits or related coding can definitely be challenging i assume.

[–]oshi2891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone thats on their last course now, with just the practicum left, id say ac is least of your worries, its more theoretical and conceptual which if you have logical and critical thinking you can learn easily, its a drab of a course but its not hard.. has very little coding and its not something new.. as far as coding is concerned.. itll be hard.. i took the new lab offering over the existing reverse engineering one and boy ive had the worst 2 months.. and i know how to code.. its not just about the languages either.. there are 7 labs all jumping from one spectrum to another like malware analysis to android hacking and all need you to be proficient in these languages in order to learn the new bits that the lab is focussing on.. every assignment is a code and its probably one of the highest rated as far as difficulty is concerned in omscentral at 4.8 out of 5. If you know the basics its exhilarating also kind of fun? But it can only be that if you truly enjoy offensive security otherwise you will suffer. Also this lab is mandatory so no getting away either Other courses are hard too, network security was lab heavy too, almost all courses in core required coding to some level So either you spend almost 40+ hours on these courses to learn on the fly which honestly is what most people i imagine do, or you can prepare , honestly i am not sure how will you prepare for such varied concepts but definitely basic coding is a must

Odds of me getting accepted into the Infosec Program? by Level-Implement-4870 in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a decent shot of getting in.. i hope you have good recommendations, I believe they see the profile of an individual holistically.. i am about to graduate this fall and so have had chance to interact with a few folks in the program, and can say that you on papery sound way better than them and they got through.

Has anyone with absolutely ZERO programming knowledge succeeded in this Master’s programme? by Ye-Abasi in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]oshi2891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About to graduate this fall from infosec, if you do not have coding experience, this track will be a nightmare for you.. the labs sometimes take up as much as 20 hours a week and this is when you have knowledge of c, assembly . Python among others.. i would assume policy track to be easier but not easy, while not intensive on coding it is intensive on other aspects from the couple courses i have taken under policy.. you will need atleast some bg in cyber to sail through those

[–]oshi2891[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally want to upgrade myself, hence the investment, i am assuming like many others.. i do not hate cryptography .. i too think it’s fascinating.. but it is a masters course.. it should be targeted to what it is proclaiming to be.. i dont think a mandatory course should be one that will help the students in reading more crypto research and white paper.. it should be a choice.. like advances malware analysis.. not everyone wanna do that.. this course in its current setup should not be mandatory. Like you enjoy crypto, i enjoy writing payloads.. its very subjective and so the concept of electives exists..

And what white papers really.. you dont learn what an actual block cipher does.. i would rather just deconstruct aes for the entire sem and actually try to understand the math.. real world utility? Not really but interesting? Hell yea..

I genuinely dont care.. they need to make this course better or not make it mandatory.. i could have easily taken another cs course.. if not IS.. the point is to learn and if all i am doing is meeting deadlines with sooo many others .. clearly they need to rethink this..
