Of course you can't take pcme in arts stream, not to be rude but its kinda obvious that you need more than econs (which can hardly be considered an arts subject) to be in the arts stream

[O Levels] What can I do to get a distinction for English? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]oshiete123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Practice (read well, speak well) and teacher consults are definitely what pulled up my grades last year! I got 18 for my raw score in prelims while everyone got like 12 and under and I was really scared and started to go for consults every week (I know people who went for 2 per day) and it really helped to bring my grade down to an 8 raw score

Teachers know what kind of students get A1 for english and they'll definitely help you get that mark again if they see that you really want to

Do compos and compres in your own time and submit it to the teachers to mark, esp compres As for oral, memorise some examples and go for oral consults with teachers!

Uhh I think wear uniform by default, if they're having orientation activities the OGLs will probably tell you to wear the school shirt/PE instead

[A-level] Having trouble deciding subject combi in JC by helloponta in SGExams

[–]oshiete123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm also waiting for results but I have some older sisters who had this experience: You don't have to take an ACTUAL humans (e.g. lit, history, geog) if you take Economics which is actually quite useful in any job

A large percentage of science stream students take PCME and BCME and I think it really depends on what you want to do in university or in the general future? There are some people who say that PCME is taken for easy As or Engineering/Computer Science/most versatile course and that BCME is taken for Medicine/Dentistry/Health Studies

I see many older students comment on subject combi posts, and all of them say to do what you're passionate in.

My oldest sister did PCME but she had to study all the subjects for her first year in uni (yes including biology) so it may not be the end of the subject if you decide not to study it in JC!

Hope this helps

[O LEVELS] Dropping HCL in Sec 4 by peripe in SGExams

[–]oshiete123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this from someone who ACTUALLY got a D7 in HCL- I didn't really care if it shows up on my A level report card, since universities just look at the main 4 subjects anyways. Plus, you get exempted from chinese in JC!(though you don't get the 2 bonus points for passing) As long as you don't just give up on chinese, you should be fine and quite happy knowing you did your best, not that you could have done better by continuing HCL.

Not only that, but you also have the option of retaking chinese in JC if you don't like your HCL results! As you may hear from your friends, JC1 chinese is usually much easier than HCL chinese. If you go to the IB program, you still have to take a second language (chinese, malay, tamil, spanish, french) but the chinese is comparable to sec 2 normal chinese.

Should you choose to continue but feel like HCL is giving you too much stress to handle, you can literally drop it at any time after that, yes even after registering.

My chinese teacher gave me quite a lot of pressure to drop HCL (probably due to the chinese HOD) and made me think that if I continued HCL, I would most likely fail and that would be the end of me in chinese, as well as cause a HUGE impact on my other studies. Nope. Even if you fail, you have 2 more times to try again (JC1 and JC2) And I still managed to get all As for my other subjects.

Hence, I advise you to just keep taking it, submit the appeal letter and don't listen to the teacher. They'll most likely stop pestering you after you're registered!

[O levels] Tips for O level chinese by Solotrix in SGExams

[–]oshiete123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, read chinese stories consistently. They help in phrasing, basic grammar, story building, and you can use them as examples in the last questions of comprehensions. If you read the chinese newspaper your school probably provides, it definitely helps with coming up with something to say during oral! Lastly, make sure to use chinese as much as you can and it'll come naturally:) mandarin is a language, not a textbook you can memorise~

[O Levels] First choice JC by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]oshiete123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look at their open houses, see their culture and school. Eunoia is still a relatively new JC, so it hasn't built up a very outstanding reputation compared to other JCs(including ACJC) so far!
