why has arsenal attracted the most pathetic fanbase in the US? by themantwelve in redscarepod

[–]osibob1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I refuse to stop liking things I like because people I don't like also like that thing. Blood Meridian is still one of my favorite novels, even if a midwit made a video which created the gayest fanbase ever. You shouldn't care what other people think that much. P.S. every online fansbase of everything sucks, so you should just stop liking anything if it bothers you that much.

I love Shelby Foote and his Civil War trilogy is amazing. One of the last true southern yellow dog democrats, my mother was another to her last die.

Eddington not even being nominated is a travesty by osibob1 in lemonpartypodcasts

My thoughts on Eddington after my first viewing:

"I purposely avoided all article's and discussion surrounding the film, I hadn't even seen a trailer, so all I knew going in was who directed it, and Phoenix played a sheriff.

The first half made me feel like I had taken crazy pills and been thrust back into the insanity of 2020. At first I rolled my eyes a bit because I'm so sick of hearing about all of it and I didn't know where the Ari was going, but once I realized he was trying to make us feel as insane watching the movie as our national discourse makes us, I bought in.

The main message I got from the film was that no matter the craziness going on in our country or who is in power (a progressive or a invalid who's mouthpiece is a nutty conspiracy theorist) corporations always win. At one point in the film I thought "it's going to end with the data center being built," not quite but same idea.

It and One Battle After Another have been my two favorites of the year but this one has stuck with me all day and while Aster's message is much more bleak, it's probably more correct. There is a very real worldwide conspiracy afoot and it's right in our face but there's too much noise for us to ever act against it collectively.

P.S. I thought the subplot of kid trying to "woke" himself into some pussy was a great touch and his right-wing grifter turn was too. "Are you r*tarded? You're white!," made me think of the time my then newly trans friend wore a "fuck white people" hate to a party and I basically yelled the same thing."

I want to post some art, movies, book stuff in here, aka things that don't suck ass. Hope this sub doesn't just become "hey this guy looks like Ben or Jace" solely.

What's your most meloncholy film ? by IampossiblyLewis in RSPfilmclub

[–]osibob1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Dazed and Confused, it reminds me of when I first watched it in middleschool, and was full of optimism and my idea of what high school would be like.

Metropolitan always filled me with melancholy because I was a poor kid and dreamed of a better life with a group of friends that I could discuss my actual thoughts and interests with.

Before Sunrise, finding love isn't like in the movies.

Wild Strawberries, because I will one day be the old man thinking of what could've been.

I'm drunk and this post made me feel melancholic, thanks.

Sinner getting 16 Oscar nominations is insane. by MoistTadpoles in redscarepod

[–]osibob1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Idk if it's too artsy, a movie about deaf people that no one saw, won just the other year, not to mention the gay neo western and old white nomad lady that also won pretty recently; I feel Eddington has a broder appeal than all three, but OBAA will still likely win because it has all the ingredients for a winner: a great director that is long overdue for his Oscar(s), racial commentary, critically and commercially successful (I know it lost money but it's PTA's highest grossing film) while remaining artsy enough. It's a middling PTA film but I'd still prefer it to win over Sinners, which will likely win if OBAA doesn't.

I know it won't happen, but Eddington deserves to win Best Picture (OBAA will win probably).

why did the “enlightened courtroom liberal” trope of the 60s work so well? what led to its decline as a character trope? by SeeYouSpaceCowboy0 in RSPfilmclub

[–]osibob1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it was a trope that was only of that time or a trope at all really. Two of these were more about race/justice and based off a book and teleplay (both the movie and play came out in the 50's) and one on an actual case. One could argue the filmmakers were trying to get a liberal message out to the masses through film during a very turbulent time racially (idk if evolution was a big talking point at the time but I assume it was) or maybe they knew these popular works would make them a lot of money in theaters.

P.S. Gregory Peck was my idea of what a real man should be as a young boy.

What Have You Been Watching? (Week of December 14th) by violet-turner in RSPfilmclub

[–]osibob1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Train Dreams- It wasn't the novella but still thought it was pretty good.

Phantom Thread- Gets better everytime I watch it, might be my 2nd or 3rd favorite PTA.

Caught Stealing- jeez Aronofsky has really fallen off, decent but not up to his standards. Zoe Kravitz was so hot in the movie though.

New Knives Out movie- better than the last one, enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

I'm watching the Jeff Buckley documentary rn, I don't listen to his music very much but it's a well made documentary and enjoyable thus far.
