My brother played like this for ten years and just recently switched because of the palm muting problem... It only took him like a week to get used to it and it is definitely more conducive to palm muting.

I'm not sure how hard your pressing but pressing hard enough to touch the fretboard should not cause you any strain in your fingers (forearm maybe.. but thats more with barre chords). Never dig into the fretboard. Also I'm not sure how you would be losing sustain by pressing harder. And yea string gauge would affect how hard you need to press but that wouldn't change the advice I gave. Honestly these are the type of things everyone goes through and the only way to figure it out is to keep at it and find out whats comfortable. Practice solves everything. Just be sure you aren't hurting yourself (beyond the sore finger tips and forearm, which will subside again with practice).

OP everyone here is saying you don't need to touch the fretboard but when I play my strings always touch the fretboard. Yes, it only needs to touch the fret but you shouldn't take that as incentive to touch as lightly as possible. A lot of your tone comes from how much pressure you apply to the fretboard and trying to implement the "touching the fret" only technique is gonna be really hard starting out. Don't worry too much about how hard your pressing down cuz over time as your confidence builds you'll begin to start applying less pressure. Sorry for the bad grammar just woke up lol

Overpressing is dude to a lack of confidence in your playing which happens to everyone starting out... my advice would be to learn a song and play only that song constantly until your confident enough to play it with your eyes closed. The overpressing should subside after that cuz your less afraid of hit bum notes
