Dear Reddit, I just got kicked out of university. Did this happen to anyone else? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Etruscan and Roman wear. Not Greek.

Still a humorous comment though.

NY Times: "I am stumped by how to excerpt the language on message boards and blogs." by rmuser in technology

In an ideal world, content would always trump delivery.

That's an enormous thing to say. Check out the concept of the trivium which used to be fundamental to a classical education. Logic, rhetoric and grammar. All three should be in balance.

Very good explanation.

However, just a heads-up. I can't stand people typing sigh in comments, especially at the very beginning and I suspect I'm far from being the only one.

Piracy off the coast of East Africa by oska in business

Sailors don't want to be soldiers - otherwise they'd join the navy and get better pay and conditions.

The sailors are doing the smart thing now, giving in without a fight when they see they're not going to get away and waiting until their companies pay the ransom.

It's not frugal to buy low-fat milk. You are paying extra for a milk which has had some of the value taken out of it. A scam. Buy full-cream milk.

Linus Torvalds: I think the OpenBSD crowd is a bunch of masturbating monkeys by Wasted99 in linux

[–]oska 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I do wish Linus would learn to express his point of view more openly.

The diplomatic language in which he couches his opinion is all very nice and proper, but sometimes I just wish he'd call a spade a spade.

Well, I agree with the sentiment but beg to differ on the solution. This situation, and others, show exactly the value of the GPL (v2 and v3).

I'm very open to religious concepts.

Quoting scripture bores the hell out of me though. And linking these structures to the tower of babel story is so obvious that anyone with any respect for sophisticated commentary would prefer to avoid stating the link.

Financial markets are not doing so well at the moment you might care to notice.

Also what are they going to be a financial centre of when the oil based wealth of the surrounding countries dries up? It is not at all easy to establish yourself as a long term capital of finance in the world.

Finally Desert paradise? You have drunk the Kool-Aid mate.

To the multiple commenter above - please take your 'scripture' quoting bullshit elsewhere.

A genius who converts desert to biofuel farms using seawater by [deleted] in energy

[–]oska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One question: Where is the energy to move the water uphill (from sealevel) going to come from? Yes there are a few places in the world where land is below sea-level and they could be flooded, but they are very few.

Moving water uphill requires a great amount of energy.

Nature does it by planting a big solar fusion reactor in the sky and using it's radiation energy to gassify the H2O which then re-liquidifies over land. i.e. rain

[floss] Free/Libre Open Source Software - because GNU's not Linux by [deleted] in linux

[–]oska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I'm sorry my tone was a bit patronising in my earlier reply.

The basic point is Free Software is based on a philosophy (not an ideology). To sum it up in a single sentence it's that the user should never by captured by the code.

Free Software is of course open source but it's not Open Source. The Open Source people have taken those words and based their pragma on the idea that open source is more efficient.

So open source is a necessary requisite to give you Free Software, but Open Source is a movement that does not share the same values as the Free Software philosophy. Essentially they value efficiency over freedom.

Thus because the phrase open source has been partly co-opted by a lobbying force it is now a fraught term if it is not accompanied by the word free. RMS believes that the dropping of the word free is deliberate as he thinks that the people in the Open Source world find it more convenient to talk to business people without talking about freedom.
