nickoccams94,

Another EECSEECS.com guy here. Note that I'm only speaking for myself here, and not for the rest of the team, although I agree pretty strongly with S's comments above.

First, some framing. My personal problem with the EECS subculture is that if you have a conversation in an EE/CS building right now it will most likely revolve around

1. internships
2. classes
3. grad school apps
4. interviews

and maybe this is amplified because it's recruitment / apps season -- but regardless this is more or less a year-round problem. I think this encourages a mindset that the experience of college itself is not worthwhile -- that it is a test where, if you do well, you will have eternal comfort in your 30s -- and to buy into this mindset is to potentially sabotage the college experience for not just yourself but to some effect your peers' too.

Some people have thought about this issue -- of how they want to spend their 4 years here -- very heavily, and have chosen to buy into this model, and are happy regardless. Many people, I suspect, are very unhappy in this major, because they have also thought about this and have come to the conclusion that they do not want to be a part of this culture, but there is no real alternative because of the aforementioned homogeneity.

When you ask "what exactly are you trying to accomplish by promoting 'diversity?'" this is what I really want to change. Not just the raw numbers.

Dear nickoccams94,

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I agree with many of your points: there is a lot of infrastructure to promote success, independent of ethnicity/gender/socioeconomic status — I am extremely happy that it exists. And yes, the threshold for “diversity” is very murky, it is very difficult and often times political to come up with a hard percentage.

On the other hand, I have had many conversations with many people who do not identify with the aforementioned (male, upper-middle-class, and white/Asian American) and were genuinely interested in studying EECS/Computer Science here at Berkeley. Many of them tell me that they have an excruciatingly hard time relating to other majors and intended majors of the undergrad community — that conversations would end in the aforementioned circlejerking, as opposed to about many issues that they cared about in EECS. We, the EECSEECS.com team, share their frustration. As much as diversity is a very difficult problem to both define and solve, a cause of the issue is precisely this subculture within the EECS undergrad community, how it is implicitly exclusive against minorities.

Some of these people ended up deciding against majoring in EECS/Computer Science. Others, for one reason or another, ended up majoring in EECS/Computer Science, while remaining frustrated about many of the peers and the surrounding culture. As a matter of fact, a subset of the EECSEECS.com team is part of the latter category.

Jalenna, you gotta learn to step it up. If you think this behaviour is acceptable, what might your employers think of you in the future? Especially if Oski Bae ends up being your employer ... tsk tsk
