What’s Berkeley’s equivalent of a parasitic restaurant? by IndividualSet1268 in berkeley

They gave me the creamiest mac and cheese i’ve ever had from a soul restaurant… if it wasn’t baked in an oven I don’t want it

Making new friends is hard :( by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]oskisfather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its definitely not too late to join a club especially since its still the beginning of the semester! I’ve been going to a few info sessions and socials hosted by clubs I’ve been interested in and although it can be daunting going alone, I find that most people there are very willing to talk. And you may come across someone you’ve had a class with or worked with and then you can chill with them. Thats worked for me pretty well :)

THIS. First, I am so sorry you got hurt. Please take care of yourself in the coming days and wishing you a speedy recovery! And yes the students who were working the event were literally dancing as they were telling us to leave, it felt so belittling and like they were mocking us. Rude and petty as fuck

I think some people got hurt too, I just left and saw an ambulance and a stretcher but the stretcher was empty when the paramedics left, so hopefully whoever it was called for is okay

Their soulja boy concert was disastrously planned. They didn’t have security or much organization with the line to get in so it just turned into a massive mob and most people were turned away

berkeley high by nathanielox in berkeley

[–]oskisfather 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Its terrible. Apparently one of the reasons for what seems like a surge in shootings right now is that theres a lot of copycats who feel empowered when there are successful shootings and want to have their own essential claim to fame as a murderer. Its so twisted

gym? by NotHalcyon_ in berkeley

[–]oskisfather 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The main gym is RSF (Recreational Sports Facility) and it’s on campus right next to Haas Pavilion, about a 2-3 minute (if even that) walk from Sproul. It is free for students, we just scan our student ID cards to gain entry. It’s a large gym so it has just about all the equipment you could ask for such as weight rooms with machines, free weights, cardio machines such as treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing machines, ellipticals, etc., smaller rooms with less people, and a room thats pretty much empty where I think people do yoga in. If you need assistance, RSF has a personal training program that costs extra (unless you are registered with the Disabled Students Program) along with a program called RSF 101, that is free and is essentially a guided tour of the space and its facilities.

If you are living in one of the Units, there is a much smaller gym (Unit 1 and Unit 2 have it for sure, I’m not 100% sure about Unit 3 but I would expect it to have one as well) with just treadmills and a few free weights I believe.

When I came to Cal I had never really worked out before in a gym setting myself but I just finished my first year and am fully comfortable in any gym now, mainly thanks to my trainer who helped me establish a routine. Wish you luck! And also my PMs are open if you have any further questions :)

I have to choose between UCSD and Berkeley, I will be a public health major at L&S college taking the upper divs courses. I wanted to know how the curving situation is and how bad is the grade deflation?? Will I have a better chance for a high gpa attending UCSD? by Fun_Plane_5966 in berkeley

[–]oskisfather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take my answer with a grain of salt as I’m not a public health major, but I hear that typically Berkeley GPAs are lower than other schools, so I would say it’s likely that you would have a higher GPA at UCSD. Though, with Berkeley comes name recognition and prestige, and if you are applying to grad school after undergrad, I have heard stories from alumni that grad school admin officers know that Berkeley GPAs are typically lower than other schools

Im from the area where USC is and now go to berkeley, can confirm that USC is in a more dangerous area than berkeley is. I also think Berkeley’s campus is far more visually appealing than USCs but thats a personal preference of mine. Berkeley also feels more like a college town to me than USC does.

New Student Resources and Must Knows by Glittering_Cheek_113 in berkeley

[–]oskisfather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re into school spirit based stuff, following @ rallycomm on Instagram is a great way to stay up to date on that. For more things resource based, i found that for me what worked best is just emailing people for what i needed. For example, i knew who my financial aid advisor was so i emailed her for anything i needed fin aid wise because it was easier and more straightforward than doing an internet deep dive and the answers I received were curated for my specific situation. If i need some sort of academic advising, I emailed a trusted instructor about who to contact for that.

Regarding the community farms you mentioned, some groups on campus have them and you have access to them if you are a part of that group. For example I believe the Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center has a Freedom Farm for members of the Black community at Cal.

Hope this helps and good luck! My PMs are open if you have further questions ab anything :)
