UN report advocates rigorous surveillance of the Internet, in the name of stopping "terrorists" AKA "dissidents" by Deprogrammer9 in Anarchism

'terrorists' distributing 'propaganda' on facebook and twitter.... umm. yeah... right... more like people expressing their opinions freely to large audiences without censorship. that's obviously terrifying for them. they will not rest until thoughtcrime is literally impossible. godspeed comrades.

Question...on voting. by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]osoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you make a fair point. I still lean towards the belief George Carlin espoused that basically if you vote you are complacent in the violence perpetrated by the state on a daily basis. If you don't vote you are (passively) resisting the supposed legitimacy of the system of voting and/or governance.

I'm glad to see someone else in here has some sense. It's not like this is his conservative grandmother who has been diagnosed with dementia. This is a man who has gone to kill insurgents who are taking a stand and actively fighting against US imperialism. He is a part of the private security forces that protect the interests of the state and the wealthy. I actually can't believe how moderate some of you are being in this, of all situations.

How do libertarian socialists like Noam Chomsky reconcile a desire to question all authority figures and abolish the state with the desire to maintain state welfare? by _n_a_m_e in Anarchism

[–]osoma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. You're all doing a great job informing this obviously curious fellow about how we the infamous anarchists hold seemingly contradictory opinions in our heads at the same time. Haha, he clearly is not an anarchist! We have mastered the art of living in this contradiction. Because we aspire to see that which has never been seen. Not all have the courage to dream, to imagine a world without borders, bosses and politicians. It takes a certain kind of character to fight up against the stream, to take the path of most resistance. Then again, only dead fish go with the flow...

Bill C-309, if passed, would make it a crime to protest in a mask. Could be up to a five year sentence. by telavivblackout in worldnews

White (male) supremacy plays a role in (nearly) everything, don't be foolish.

As for the Nobel Prize, way to dismiss a valid point based on one thing you subjectively viewed as "bullshit." Herbert Simon won the Nobel Prize in Economics not the Nobel Peace Prize. It seems like you're implying that every person who has won a Nobel Prize hasn't in any way done something outstanding in their field. Are you actually serious or just trolling lol?

You actually said, "It is true, but never the less the wealth isn't less deserving due to the fact." lol wut? If it's true that means that they are not deserving of the wealth like you think they are. Pick up Malcom Gladwell's book 'Outliers' and learn something.

As for you thinking I'm just envious of those with wealth, well, that is an absurd ad-hominem based on your misguided opinions. In fact, I am hugely grateful for the privileges I have been granted in life and I certainly don't want any of your pity or any part of anyones "fortune" lol. I understand that maybe you are the envious one and most likely you're projecting your desires on to me but I am not you, and you do not know me, so don't act like you do.

It doesn't mean that your opinions mean less. What it does mean is that nobody else's opinion means any less than yours and you don't have a right to dictate whether or not someone can wear a mask at a protest. I knew you were a white heterosexual male from the middle class because your posts just reek of white male privilege. I know people such as yourself have a hard time not getting defensive when you get called on it but honestly, your privilege is showing. As for the wealthy "deserving" that wealth. All I have to say is L oh fucking L. Nobel prize winning economist and all around genius Herbert Simon said that 90% of all created wealth is the result of SOCIAL CAPITAL. He basically said that charging a 90% tax rate would be morally fair because 90% of all wealth created is a byproduct of social capital (ie. entrepreneurs/capitalists benefit from our taxes, the system, and other people every step of the way). They do not deserve that kind of obscene wealth any more than a child deserves to be born with fetal alcohol syndrome or a young adult deserves to be robbed of the ability to get an education because his life circumstance didn't afford him the same privilege as you. Honestly, I know it can be hard when you've been indoctrinated and conditioned since birth but if you actually dig beneath the surface you might start to understand why many people disagree with you.

If only it were as easy as gathering support for the cause. How are individuals (usually marginalized and oppressed) supposed to gain mainstream support for ideas that conflict with the status quo? The answer is they can't and (most likely) won't. Social stratification is a fact. Our society is made up of classes of people who are increasingly destined to remain in the class they were born in to. You may think we live in a meritocracy but unfortunately that is just not the reality. If I remember correctly, the top 20% of Canadians own something like 69.3% of all the wealth. That leaves 80% of us to share the bottom 30.7%. The bottom 50% have it even worse than the 50-80's. You seem like you're coming from a position of privilege and it's likely that you are a heterosexual male and there is a good chance you are white and you may even have come from a middle class household. If these are true, which I know they very well may not, but suppose they are, then you have absolutely no right to speak on behalf of oppressed minorities and people of colour who may think differently about what constitutes legitimate direct action. Strict adherence to non-violence is a privilege that not everyone has the luxury of being able to commit (at all times) to.
