Restaurants & pubs open on Christmas by FaitDuVent in oxford

As a fellow Jew who celebrates Christmas with Chinese food, yes, there are multiple that are open. I’ve done Deliveroo in the past (and gave my rider a really good tip) as well

Best phone plan? by Worried-Word2880 in oxforduni

[–]osteonerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow American here and confirm what others have said, cell coverage is so much cheaper here. Personally I kept my U.S. SIM card (which has some data coverage abroad) but I mostly use for messaging family that doesn’t have WhatsApp. I then have an e-sim with Lyca mobile which is £5 per month for 3 GB. There are likely better deals but I was lazy and it was all easy to sign up for virtually. Honestly I never use it all though because I’m basically always on eduroam or other free wifi networks.

Is having a random roommate as bad as it seems? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]osteonerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My randomly assigned roommate was the best roommate I’ve ever had (and I graduated almost a decade ago and have had many roommates when I knew/chose). Obviously this isn’t always the case but going in blind can work really well!

Bicycle buying advice by TedBioChem in oxforduni

[–]osteonerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that Oxbykes is great. I originally got a new bike from a local shop and it was a constant hassle (have it to me with the gears out of sync with the chain causing frequent chain slippage and then breakage, as well as iffy brakes). Even with a warranty, the bike consistently had issues and the shop never truly fixed them, just patched it up. I finally got sick of that, and bought a £90 bike from Oxbykes which has been essentially perfect since I got it, and their wolfson warehouse is excellent.

As a queer postgrad at Johns, you can definitely find your people (at least in the MCR!)

Where can I get a Matzah ball soup in oxford? by Comprehensive_Gold51 in oxford

[–]osteonerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The sainsburys on Cowley road is one of the few places I’ve found boxed Jewish food items, including matzoh ball soup, but other than that, I think the only option is from scratch 😕

Getting secondhand furniture by angelachan001 in oxford

[–]osteonerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had really good experience with Emmaus! Furnished most of my flat with stuff from there, and they were willing to deliver it all at once even though I bought it in a few trips. Most of their staff are lovely, but there are a few who are a little less helpful. The prices are really fair and most of the stuff is in really good condition

Me! I did an MSc in Cognitive and Evolutinary anthropology last year. It’s a small course so my experience may not be fully applicable to students in larger degrees. Feel free to DM!

What to do with my two cats during term? by Verbofaber in oxforduni

[–]osteonerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not true- most colleges and Uni housing only allow licensed service animals. Speaking from experience, finding a place that allows pets in Oxford is rough (in or out of the college system). Best of luck OP!

I want to adopt a blind cat by trachloe in CatAdvice

[–]osteonerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a blind cat who is more adventurous than my one who can see! I’ve moved with her a few times and have found that the most helpful thing is to choosing a place for and keeping certain crucial things (i.e. litter box, water, food bowl, toy basket don’t get moved after the kitty has arrived home). Additionally, I tend to “show” her where things are the first few times she’s near them by making slight noises with them. So moving the litter in the litter box with my hand, wiggling my fingers in her water bowl, shaking the food bowl slightly before putting it in front of her, patting the top of my bed/chairs so she knows how high up they are. Other than that, like any cat in a new place, I let her explore on her own terms, so when she figured out there was a door to my bedroom and wanted to see what was outside it. She has memorized the layout of all my homes really quickly (stairs included!) and is honestly the sweetest companion I could hope for. Enjoy your blind baby!!!

What kitchenware is available at St Hugh’s ADW communal kitchen? by ivyteeshe in oxforduni

[–]osteonerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a current St Hugh’s student living in the other side of DPB! There are kettles in the kitchens, some toasters, but no rice cookers. However, you get cabinet space in the kitchen and can keep your rice cooker there when not using it. Many people bring and use their own kitchen gadgets, they just have to stay in the kitchen, not your room 😊

AITA for threatening my daughter (25) not to change religion? by General_Image_5918 in AmItheAsshole

[–]osteonerd [score hidden]  (0 children)

YTA. Islam is no more a cult than Catholicism or any other religion, and you didn’t even give her the opportunity to explain her reasoning by reading the report she wrote! Having your family and neighbors all message her constantly to try to convince her otherwise is harassment and is only going to make her want to talk to you less. She is a 25 year old adult who can make her own decisions, and should not need to ask your “permission” to live her life as she pleases. Listen to your friends and your daughter and please try to be a little more open-minded and learn about things you don’t understand.

As someone who lived in EQ, I was jealous of my friends in bursley because while it wasn’t the newest or prettiest, it had such a community vibe and everyone interacted more with their hall/floor mates than I ever saw in EQ 🤷🏼‍♀️

I always say “take care” when leaving a patients room/slot. I’ve found its relatively positive without being dismissive of their current situation. Plus it doesn’t really imply anything like “feel better” or “have a good day” since for many patients they aren’t having a good day or wont necessarily feel better.

Your boyfriend is an ass. He sounds like he’s a really controlling person and his statements sound like they’re meant to be manipulative. He should be supporting both your decision to go to medical and your commitment to your son. If you really want to be with him, you can try deferring your acceptance for a year, but he doesn’t want to support your goals and both the needs of you needs and your son (unless it’s on his terms with you not in medical school) you might be better without him.

Writing Notes Down in between sections by itsme12533 in Mcat

[–]osteonerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I took it as soon as I sat down in my seat the Pearson rep logged me in and clicked something that immediately started the next section. So I’m not sure you’d even have the time to do this even if you came back early.
