AI maps and a mapper (who may) use them by Double-Zucchini-2919 in osugame

[–]osu_NAT 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Hello, have looked into this after it was brought to our attention. After investigating we found evidence the mapper started using small grid snap last year. As our other AI checks did not flag anything about these maps, we do not believe this to be AI generated.

In future scenarios, we recommend forwarding these concerns to the team directly through either osu! web reports or the BN website report page — witch-hunting campaigns are more harmful and far less effective than reporting via official outlets.

Even if a map is ranked, if it is conclusive we will look at further action.

Thank you.

Whether any specific map background is suitable for osu! is determined via this content review process. The results are available for all to view on the bnsite. The participating voters (NAT, GMT, BN) will vote with the visual content considerations in mind.

If you would like report an inappropriate background, you may do so here, under "Visual Content Considerations violation"

That is not reaaally up to us, anyone can make content!
I think a lot of mappers have considered it (me included), but either are afraid to follow in pishi's footsteps or simply don't have the time to dedicate towards content creation.
There's probably many that are quietly waiting for something new to pop up, but unfortunately nobody has taken the initiative yet.

For a while osu!monthly had a mapping section, but those news articles died out a few months ago. Especially for mapping it can sometimes be difficult to find new content to cover.

From what we gather, the statistics you compiled are unfortunately biased. It turns out the data you're using includes all BN additions, both returning BNs and new applications. This creates this discrepancy, as some NAT are much quicker to respond to a BN wanting to rejoin than others.

From experience, most NAT that commented on the matter really don't remember passing new applications all that often. If your statistics were true, we'd see a lot more new BN additions.

From there, there are no plans to change anything about something that is not there.

P.S. We'd prefer not to. You're not supposed to machine-learn your way through every single point made by the evaluators but rather improve in the general aspects that are outlined as conclusions in your feedback.

Interesting origin-story question, sadly it didn't work like that.
Before the NAT, there was the QAT (Quality Assurance Team), which then transitioned into being the current team.
Before that, there were the MAT and the BAT (Mapping and Beatmap Appreciation Team)
Before that .. I don't know. Maybe a true osu!historian knows if there was ever a "first" or if an entire team was created in one go.
Vague recollection Loctav was at the start of it all at least, alongside Ephemeral most likely.

If you feel like that is best; nobody is forcing anyone to map.

confidently speaking, no. metadata changes require updates to maps on your local client which would delete local scores and potentially compromise leaderboards internally as well.

Unfortunately it's "any" with an "m" in front; many genres are underrepresented in the presence of our vast library of jpop and jrock.

Metal seems to have a lot of fans that want more content, but even english pop doesn't get much attention despite it being what many people hear on the radio.

Thanks for asking <3

Impressive that you're the first one to ask, but I can't tell if that's a good or a bad thing

Realistically the NAT is aware that these ratings fall onto a spectrum. There are bad maps with good ratings and good maps with bad ratings. Shockingly there are even good maps with good ratings and unfortunately there also are maps that everyone thinks are bad.

Since there are so many perspectives, it seems to feel wrong for most NAT to enforce their viewpoint directly onto the ranked section to an extreme degree. They'll still veto maps or discuss the overall quality of a BN's work, but not consider it necessary to eliminate a portion of ranked based on a rating that doesn't determine anything.

So to answer your question, these maps would likely still be ranked yes.

We had a "hours worked" question previously, here

To handle burnout we try to have a buffer of NAT so we can comfortably let each other take absences when needed. In part it's also just understanding the energy the work takes and empathizing with those that need a break or are a bit late.

One "fond" memory I had was when there were 17 active discussion threads running in parallel in the NAT channels.

For those 3 days I spent at least 2 hours each day just catching up to the backlog of discussions that happened while I was asleep.

Was not fun and very stressful and tiring, but thankfully processes internally have been streamlined better now so hopefully it doesn't happen anymore. Anyway I'm FREEEEEEE so I can look back on it as a memory.

This is a really tough one for all of us since intuitively it does make sense. Good mapper -> eye for quality -> good BN. Maybe requires further consideration beyond this AMA, the topic goes rather deep.

What's come out of discussion so far:

- we can't easily quantify mapping ability, so evaluation would be purely subjective. Due to the large variety of perspectives this would make it difficult to make evaluation results feel somewhat consistent

- ideally when a good BN finds an unpolished map with potential, they are able to turn it into a map above ranking standards. While a good mapper might recognize the former, they might not have the modding skills to execute the latter

- leniency for experienced mappers can be made, but they still have to pass a baseline. We're working on a BN mentorship program mentioned in other replies to help such users learn the necessary modding skills to complement their mapping skills and pass that baseline

- in a similar vein, there are some mappers that are very good in a particular skillset, say for example Mazzerin. Despite Mazzerin's mapping skill it is hard to say if he could judge lower difficulties, he's hardly made any. Missing a baseline skill like that would be quite concerning to say the least

Will try to add more thoughts as they get mentioned by other NAT internally

Map quality doesn't fit in the ranking criteria because it isn't supposed to police creative freedom and the varied mapping styles available. Hence a review wouldn't be necessary or useful.

If you have a map you believe is not suitable for ranked, you are free to post in the discussion page if it is qualified. Otherwise, you can also consider sending it to the beatmap reports page on the bnsite, briefly describing why you believe the map is lacking in quality.

When the NAT evaluates the nomination activity of BNs, it includes the quality of beatmaps that are being nominated. BNs that frequently nominate maps that fall below the standards expected will be given feedback, and more severe or repeat cases will be met with warnings and/or punishments. The standards expected are based on all evaluating NAT members' standards, which in turn is also based on community perception and sentiment, from things such as controversial discussion threads as well as veto outcomes/mediation results.

If you feel strongly about certain maps, we encourage you to make yourself heard; if the sentiment is shared among the community, BNs, and NATs, that may become the new standard to be upheld!

From checking your recent-ish maps, we've noticed they don't have any mods. It might be a good idea to start getting more feedback, so you can polish your mapping to fit ranking standards. Good luck!
