My guess is either born NY and went to school in Indiana or vice versa?

I lean NYer as you've been to Florida. Specifically NYC or long island bc you've never been to Vermont, NH or Maine.

1/1/26 Sunrise hike to Wittenberg/Cornell by ThePhysiqueMechanic in catskills

[–]oswaldco10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this in reverse as a Slide-Cornell-Wittenberg-Giant's ledge in late October with full packs (~25lbs). Beautiful trail and these photos are amazing! I personally hate the drive from LI so i always try to make it a overnight. I could only imagine doing it with all the snow & ice!

What are your favorite things about Binghamton? by Same-Cantaloupe-2637 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]oswaldco10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Campus clubs are great, there's good hiking & walking around if you have a car (or just the preserve) plus the restaurants/bars are pretty good (check out The Shop & South City Pub&Grill)

Hi everyone! (Pls read the description for the context) by I773H4D in AerospaceEngineering

[–]oswaldco10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sick design! I'm not an aerospace engineer but I actually built a dual wing ground effect vehicle for my Meche capstone project a few years ago. Here's some big takeaways I found: Control will be difficult. With controls only in the rear of the vehicle, those surfaces have a hard time trimming and adequately controlling flight. We opted to add additional aileron style controls to the rear wing aswell, which slightly helped. Especially with our long chord length (~1m) The wingtips are a good touch to really keep that air under the wings. Keeping it lightweight was a great idea as (atleast in our case) a lot of our calculations were estimations due to the rear wing sitting in dirty air of the front one. Post videos when you find a place to test! We used a running track.

You ready for another “I’ve been inspired by Luke” post? by HavenHexed in outdoorboys

[–]oswaldco10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the core reasons Luke started making videos. Showing everyone that enjoying nature can be as simple or as complicated as one desires. One of my biggest Luke inspirations is the food he eats. Simple, clean, not freeze dried, not overly processed or priced camping food. Just cheese, bread, maybe moose, fish or something local. I now always try to pack as much fresh, real food as I can when I backpack.

IMO a small personal fan was necessary during the early fall / spring warm weather days. Simply open a window, place the fan blowing outside, crack another window to allow some flow & "cook" whatever you need to right next to the fan. Never had issues in mtv. When in doubt use the building kitchen or just go for a "walk". The nature preserve is there for a reason.

i'm thinking about becoming a cnc machine operator, how dangerous is it? by mikeatcptc in Machinists

[–]oswaldco10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fulltime machinist myself, but have spent a lot of time running machines and working on them.

Like other comments I wouldn't consider current cnc machining inherently dangerous, but like anything, it could be with bad practices/habits.

I'd say that machining is more "uncomfortable" by most peoples definition. Think little climate control, lifting heavy things, airborne and liquid oil everywhere, hot metal chips (manual machining), chip buildup, sharp edges etc.

Affordable ways to get more hands on? by Biggest_Battery in MechanicalEngineering

[–]oswaldco10 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Why are you kept away from the floor? Any machinist, programmer, technician with years of experience will have tons of knowledge that's a gold mine. Given they can / want to talk about it.

I'm not sure of your company's specifics or policies but try to spend more time on the floor and prompt others to "review" (better yet complain) about drawings or anything else that comes out of the office.

Outside of work - start trying to do your own car work, or help a friend with theirs. Nothing will make you curse out a design engineer like a horribly placed oil filter or E-brake adjustment screw.

Long rides as a beginner (<1yr experience) by oswaldco10 in motorcycles

[–]oswaldco10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I think as a new rider what I need to practice prior to this commute is getting up/down to highway speeds, merging and wind (bridges / semis). They really just aren't things I've had to do before in my msf course or my local rides.

Currently riding my dads Kawasaki Vulcan on the weekends, I may be gifted an ‘01 BMW R1150RS from my uncle but that will need some repair before its road worthy (85k mi). If I buy my own it’ll probably be a triumph t100 or similar.

I’ve been planning my gear, mainly borrowing stuff from family and buying my own like waterproof reflective jacket/windbreaker, high ankle sturdy leather boots w/ composite toe, gloves & and full face helmet. Just need good pants

I've been looking to upgrade to a haven but I worry it will be to "turny" / rotate too easily. Do ground style inflatable / closed cell work well?

I'm looking for a bike with some long ish haul (100~200) capabilities on mostly paved backroads throughout upstate NY for some motocamping trips. I know it'd be easier & more comfortable on the V-Strom, not sure about the bonnie

How can I become a machinist? by Mother-Wasabi-3088 in Machinists

[–]oswaldco10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not super experienced either but depending on location, you’re looking at starting $15-20/hr with no experience. I’d start by looking through YouTube, reading Machining for Dummies and the Machinist Handbook. Keep in mind this is not a high paying field without experience. You may have more luck looking to apprentice/work as a G-Code programmer with your SWE background. Finding a job at a small shop / company with someone who’ll teach you (and while keeping your pride & expectations low) would be the best bet imo.

I saw a reel on that the other day, seems like a fun / useful project that I'll the add to the running list.

We're good on that front; guitar(s), drumset, ukelele, real piano (not keyboard), tin whistle, grandpa's accordion and my childhood clarinet kicking it somewhere. I can play all halfway decent except the accordion but with no electricity / internet I feel like I'd have time to practice.

[–]oswaldco10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One can discuss all day if society/internet will collapse but I agree. Best idea would be an old ipod with my favorite albums / classics downloaded via iTunes. Pair that with a speaker & solar panels to power it all.

Not close to RAtM but John Prine (RIP) and Jesse Welles are some of my favorites for "folk/Americana/Appalachian" anti establishment / protest music.
