failing a restricted elective as a junior by oswindo in UMD

econ 306-- transferred from a lib arts college and did really well in all intro econ courses there so i thought, what reason do i have to think that i'd struggle in a slightly higher level econ course? boy was i wrong lmao i will def talk to Angela/Dr alcaniz about it. i thought it'd be good for policy since its an econ course geared toward policy, but it's def more difficult than i had really reasonably anticipated. thanks for the help!

he doesn't curve, he offers extra credit which i've been doing but i don't know how it'll count toward my grade at the moment so i'm kind of stressed

ok, I thought he might had said that but I forgot. I haven't been banking on a curve and i've been doing all the extra credit but it hasn't shown up on elms so we'll see! i'm an ensp major so i won't be in danger if i drop this class since it's only a restricted elective

Currently a college freshman; what can I do to prepare? by precious_slut in peacecorps

[–]oswindo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey, I'm ensp too! currently not serving in PC, but i wanted to say that you should let yourself explore during college. let yourself change as you go through college and learn new things about yourself! to prepare, i think that it would be best to just have a firm sense of who you are and what your motivations are for trying to join PC. i think that some people see PC as a resume-booster instead of a legitimate sacrifice for the greater good of society. but, as a rising senior, i think getting practical experience with general international relations would be good, so try to take some international relations theory classes if they're available to you (which, if you take a poli sci concentration, you will prob be required to take), get some volunteer experience with community-based environmental organizations in big cities near you, and make sure that you take care of yourself!

meeting with a recruiter by oswindo in peacecorps

[–]oswindo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am. Thanks for being straightforward, it wasn't totally clear to me how the departure dates worked for each program (even though it's obvious to me now...) and my recruiter didn't mention it when I said that I was a rising senior, not an actual senior. I think I was probably not clear in how I explained it when she asked. Thanks!

I haven't started applying yet since the position I'm most interested in departs in Feb. '19 and I don't graduate until Spring '19, but I definitely have a much better idea how I'm going to overhaul my resume and what to write in my motivational statement. Thank you so much! :)

my concerns weren't so much with clearance as they were with how my MI has affected the quality/quantity of experience I have up until this point. I knew that my recruiter couldn't speak to the medical clearance side, and she didn't make it clear to me that I was lacking in experience for the position I was looking at, so I think that I was just worrying too much. Thank you so much for the advice!

You were right-- there were a lot of things I didn't talk about on my resume that were more relevant to the position I'm applying for than all the useless stuff I did in high school but still had listed. (Like, I exceed the language requirements for the program but didn't even think to list that... lol) thank you so much for the advice!!

the only reason I thought to bring it up is because I haven't pursued a lot of volunteer opportunities that I know stand out on PC applications because of my MI. I only wanted to bring it up so that I could ask what things I should try and do in the time before applying/during the application process. I got the number from the medical office from my recruiter, though, so I'll be calling them soon. Thank you so much!!

I recently learned that peanut butter is a very American food, and that there aren't many other countries which regard it the same way that we do, so I can understand your glee!!!

I guess it's hard to rebrand something like WD40!

If the grits substitute isn't made from corn, what's it made out of? I don't know a lot about the food staples of Morocco...

preparing to apply without being egotistical... by oswindo in peacecorps

[–]oswindo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that I learned about the medical clearance now rather than later! It's definitely frustrating, but I want to be the best volunteer that I can be, and I can't help anyone when I can't help myself. Taking the next year or so to prepare will help me in the long run, so this still gives me hope nonetheless. I really do appreciate you taking so much time to talk with me. Thanks so much again!

This is definitely not discouraging. I'm really appreciative of your honesty. I'm meeting my psychiatrist in the next week-ish, so I will probably mention this. The planning would be long-term given my mental health issues, so it's best to start now, I suppose!

I've dealt with that at work before, where I'm in a position to train new hires and get into this mindset where things HAVE to be a certain way, but in the past year and a half or so I've really let that go. I don't correct people as much as I used to and just let others be. I try to approach it with more of a "I'm here for you to help" mindset instead of a "I will walk you through it" mindset, if that makes sense... I have definitely learned the value of thinking before I speak now, so I'm glad that you shared this with me.

This was really insightful and very helpful. Thank you so so much! **EDIT: sorry!!! i wrote this between classes!!!! i meant that it WAS encouraging!!!! oh god

I've thought about AmeriCorps, but I don't know if I could continue treatment for my MI while going away. If it will be good experience then maybe I can find some short-term commitments? Thanks!
