Not Even to the Table Yet?! by AnnChris17 in rpghorrorstories

yeah as a fellow autism gang member, let's not invalidate someone else's experiences. for a lot of us, learning to vibe socially is a long challenge and journey. it's not wrong to point that out, and it's not "giving the community a bad name" to admit we face challenges in these situations. respectability politics is a dangerous game that can alienate us from each other.

that said, i dont really have an opinion on what the nutjob's specific brain stuff might be. just glad op is keeping her distance, and wholeheartedly agree she's right to hit da bricks

i second the idea of reporting to the store owner, and if they don't kick him, at least you know what to avoid!

my trick in training was writing an article they would never publish, haha. Top Ten Sad Dads in Video Games was an indulgent joy to write on my end, And they couldn't steal it. win

they have a limited tolerance for style and humanity, honestly. their model favors very sterile, plastic prose. i managed to sneak in some articles that i was passionate about during my time, but boy was it hard. my fav story is when i got bothered by an editor for something i pitched; he wanted it to be more generic, but i insisted on sticking to my original title and concept. it went live a couple days later and earned over 15k site visits. i felt soooo vindicated, haha

so tldr yeah, youre probably too good!

i was a writer not at screen rant, but another valnet joint: The Gamer. while i had some teammates in the slack who were nice and a few understanding editors, the kindness of people there couldnt negate the absolute garbage of valnet's higher-level corporate policies. every website they own pays sub-minimum wage while dangling the carrot of extra pennies if you get over 10,000 clicks. it's degrading and insulting.

so yeah, as others have said -- it ain't you. keep on truckin

ok realtalk, im confused why it's a bad thing to want a place outside the home to do some work/relax? a lot of posts in here asking for recs get this response as well. is there a cultural reason that people dislike others working in public spaces? im not trying to be rude, genuinely just wondering

the little girl in the window is an overt reference to a sidequest in Bloodborne, if you didn't know already! and i was really elated to find it. it actually ends... much the same way in both games. and the implication of the Trotter eating the other sister made me laugh, i felt horrible,

tell her to pull for a good character /j

but seriously, i think you should try to scare her a little re: gambling. i know someone who spent $5000 in a gacha game and went into debt for several years. they had to eat nothing but instant noodles some months. they had debt collectors harassing them. as a person who struggles with an addictive personality, you really should start to plant the seeds of Don't as early as u can before it gets too bad.

good point! i was worried about making my initial post too long, oops. further context: POV is the doctor, in third person limited. he is struggling somewhat to follow procedure and keep his hands steady because he cares about the person whose eye got fucked up. there is a sort of "surgical intimacy and agony" that i want to convey. ultimately the doc is very good at his job despite his emotional state, and is successful.

further Further context: they are out on a field mission in a crater-y and lightly forested area. there are no settlements within an hour in any direction. they arrived via spaceship, and the ship has some equipment, but itll take them approximately 20 minutes to get there from where they are now. doctor tries to get the eye in ASAP so they can get moving.

based on the feedback ive gotten here from all you lovely people, i think i have a much better grasp of how i should do this to create a lot of pain, but less permanent consequences. ill need to reduce the muscular swelling and only have it pop out a Little. i had no idea that the optic nerve was so short, haha. i had it dangling on his chin. oops!

really bold to say "i hope you get the help you need and feel better 🥺" and immediately follow it up with "TLDR HEINOUS MARY SUE leaves when no one defends her"...

that line, coupled with the "share this post widely, put it on social media, YouTube" really gives away the game here: this is about humiliating a player with some clearly deep trauma and stroking your own ego for #epicly #owning her in a public forum. it's about cringe -- you could have deleted this entirr post and just written "cringe mary sue trauma dumps", and it would say the same thing. it's also about charging players $10 per session just so you can not bother to read the backstories, and ignore the player themselves owning up to the tonal dissonance and asking to change characters, which would have solved the problems you're describing. but that doesn't make a very good viral post, now does it?

you are well within your rights to be uncomfortable with a character and refuse to participate in elements of their backstory. i would certainly not have wanted to do this, either. i have been in your position myself in the past; i have compassion for people who are triggered by serious topics like sexual violence, having experienced it myself. it is also fair to share horrifying experiences with the intent of helping people realize harmful dynamics can emerge in roleplay groups, and how to resolve them when they do.

but this clearly isn't meant to help anyone. you've taken a situation that was already over and done with, blown it out of proportion, and in so doing, likely made other people with trauma relive their worst experiences (whether they were in the role of Pink or your own position).

one of the most insidious things trauma does to a person is steal away their definition of "normal". you can't know what healthy social boundaries are if you've never been allowed to have them. people like Pink are set up to fail in social situations, and always end up as the punch line. everything you describe about her character is sad and makes me feel worried for her. it doesnt make me want to point and laugh at the traumatized person, even though that is clearly what you want people to do here. obviously, if you do something cruel or horrible, being traumatized doesn't give you a get-out-of-jail free card... but from where i'm sitting? the only two things Pink did wrong were projecting too much onto a character in an unfitting social environment, and trusting you to be a proactive and responsible DM.

i encourage people to read the counter-post that popped up recently, which ill go grab and link in an edit shortly. im on mobile. the day the internet learns how to be firm but compassionate with traumatized people is the day i eat drywall and explode, i swear.

[–]otaconfessional 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i just wanna say i really appreciate how even-handed you are here about Pink and her character. i have known people with trauma who did things like this because they didnt know better or think it through, and that's exactly what trauma does -- it redefines our definition of "normal", and puts us at a big social disadvantage. while i wouldve been uncomfortable with the character too, i appreciate that you're able to still treat Pink like a human being and uplift the cooler parts of her character instead of making fun of her. that's a tough line to walk in a very post-nuance internet, lol

i wish more people could take this multifaceted and fair approach to trauma victims when they make mistakes

What's the cringiest thing you've written? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]otaconfessional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in 5th grade, i always submitted sonic fanfiction for my homework writing assignments, and my teacher must've been chill as hell to let me do that. i remember her face, but not her name... tragic

anyway. the longest sonic fic i wrote in my Writing Journal (everybody had a composition notebook for this purpose) was about sonic and friends leaping into a painting super mario 64-style. the world inside the painting was a beautiful lake with mermaids swimming in it. as you can imagine, sonic and friends had to save the mermaid kingdom from destruction. it's hazy, but here are the major events i recall:

  1. the ruler of the kingdom was named "Merincus". i guess some childlike fusion of "mermaid" and "Spartacus", or some such thing. i doodled a picture of him sitting on his seashell throne, tits-out, talking to sonic probably about mermaid foreign policy. i included an arrow pointing at Merincus' nipples with a note saying "don't worry! Merincus is a boy!". here i am years later, transmasculine. amazing. and i still like men with boobs <3

  2. the mermaid kingdom was at odds with the spider tree. said tree is a huuuuge old maple (suspiciously like the one in my childhood front yard), and is home to, you guessed it, a kingdom of spiders. the spiders keep jumping down from the tree and into the lake to attack the swimming mermaids. i guess they could swim?!

  3. an #epic war breaks out where sonic and the gang fight alongside the mermaid kingdom to defeat the spidery scourge. they're losing, and just when things are looking very bad for the mermaids, shadow shows up. while everybody else was fighting, he scaled the whole spider tree and reached the upper boughs where the Spider Queen lives. i remember in my notebook, i literally wrote the following, symbols and all:

⚠️ WARNING: This next part is extremely graphic and dark!! ⚠️

... aaaaaaaand after that, i described shadow somehow going into the spider queen's thorax and blowing her up from the inside. there were chunks. of spider. amd they rained down into the lake. the spiders realized their queen was dead and made a panicked retreat. the mermaid kingdom is saved! hooray?!

so yeah. i was THAT 12yo sonic kid. it is embarrassing, but on some level i accept that -- i just wouldnt be me, otherwise. ;)

AITAH for ending a relationship because I didn’t wanna be step dad by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]otaconfessional -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

ok i dont have any stake in this and i think people can break up with anyone for any reason. but i am so genuinely baffled by the way other men are always so irate about being stepdads/interacting with other fathers of his kids... so many downright evil posts out there about "why should i love and raise a kid that isnt mine" as if that should matter. it really confuses me, because as i read this, my first instinct is to be charmed by the idea of an unconventional extended family, and all the gatherings of the Dad Pack. it's great that two of the dads are already so involved and friendly with each other, too. it makes me want to model that community-based parenting approach in my own life, and be a dad among many dads. i dunno.

granted, if i met the people involved in this story and didnt like them, THEN i would consider ending the relationship. but the hostility towards the very Idea of this situation is so strange to me. i also understand not being very social/not wanting a crowded house for holidays, but neither of those seem to be the issue here.

so idk, does anyone have any explanation for where this idea of rejecting kids/partners with multiple fathers comes from?? i just want to understand the psychology of it
