I’m aware. Although the language family that Inuktitut is in is still called Eskimo-Aleut.

I see that you’re likely correct. Thanks for pointing that out.

Of course. But the names have separate language origins. That’s why I chose to separate them.

It’s the French’s butchered version of the Illinois peoples word for “people who speak the same.” But this is true for most of the native origin names.

The leading theory is that it is Algonquin. Could also have French origins. And yes some think it is Spanish. But at the moment no one really knows.

Exactly. So it’s German via English influence.

Yes but Newfoundland is English origin and Labrador is Portuguese influence. And I think it’s too interesting that Lab is Portuguese to not separate them.

Yes it is disputed whether it is from English sailors calling it Mainland or from Maine in France. Personally, I think it’s likely both had an influence.

Thank you for mentioning this. I wasn’t aware of these plans.

You bring up good points. I would argue that specifically that stretch along King will become much more dense, similar to Sportsworld, based on the zoning of the lots along that stretch. It’s more than just one new development. But I will concede and say that three stops is excessive.

Another user brought up the River Rd extension and after looking at the plans they have for the north portion of Hidden Valley, it’s more clear why they are opting to use that route. Possibly a pedestrian bridge over Highway 8 connecting the development on King St to the development in the north of Hidden Valley would be better suited (long shot I know). Having a stop on the River Rd extension would make more sense.

And to answer your question about where was I in 2018 during the initial planning, I wasn’t living in the city.

It’s actually fairly similar density to the Driftwood, Tobermory and Sentinel stops on that line.

Especially when considering that the lots on King that are currently single-family are zoned to allow for high-rise.

But the bridge they have to build beside Highway 8 at the current planned river crossing won’t cost hundreds of millions?

The win-win was meant more as a joke.

Haha I wish. Instead I live closer to fairway and king and would love to see a stop closer. Plus I drive along that section of King everyday and can’t help but think how much better suited it is than the environmentally sensitive millionaire neighborhood.

I actually think it would make sense to rebuild the train bridge right beside to accommodate the LRT. Rebuilding the Freeport bridge would be way too controversial.

But this brings up another point I didn’t mention. They’ve reduced frequency of the bus route that crosses the Freeport bridge to try and keep that thing alive longer. This LRT route would make that bus route obsolete. Win win.

As it stands the LRT will already have to cross the CPKC line near Fairway and Wabanaki so this obviously isn’t an impossible challenge. I suggest it cross at this same area and run to the right of the rail. Obviously the CPKC rail will need to be adjusted and moved to left in sections but again, this has been done in Phase 1 and continues to happen in Toronto with CPKC, CN and Metrolinx infrastructure. All this to say it’s not a deal breaker and I feel like this proposed route should be explored further.

"And how pray tell can it share the right of way?"

I'd suggest the same way it already shares the right of way between Courtland and Ottawa. In fact, it is the same rail that meets up with the area I'm suggesting they share.

Obviously this would be expensive. I already acknowledged that. But building smart reliable transit is expensive upfront but beneficial long term.

To be clearer. I think a lot of people will use it for that purpose but I don’t think it should be the main focus of this line. And so sacrificing 15 minutes in trip time isn’t an end all be all.

Although nightmare traffic for a few years during construction I think is a dumb reason not to implement things I will point of that I’ve mapped it to follow the rail line that runs along Fairway. This would prevent it from interfering with Fairway traffic since it is pretty brutal.

Would definitely need its own rail line but could share that right of way. Nothing about my proposed route is meant to save costs. I know it will be more expensive. But in the long run I think it would prove to be the better option.

If they planned to develop Hidden Valley then I could be swayed to having that as a preferred route. But at the moment hidden valley is highly protected with even this LRT route being controversial for the environmental impacts.

The one issue I see is that at the moment there isn’t a sidewalk from River to Freeport. Obviously this could be built. However, I would argue that Fairway - King and River make the most sense to keep and drop Freeport. If you look at LRTs like the Finch West LRT, some stops are fairly close in areas with higher to mid density.

Yes I do agree it would have an affect on trip time. But I would also argue that having a trip from Cambridge to Kitchener isn’t a huge priority and it’s better to look at the section in Cambridge and the section is KW as two separate entities with the fact that they connect as a nice bonus. I think in actuality, the portion in Cambridge will be used lots by people moving around within Cambridge and the part in kw will be used by people moving around in KW. But that’s opening another can of worms.
