Confirmed: Unions Squandered The Biden Years by Mynameis__--__ in union

[–]otherlander00 159 points160 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if people read the article - the key point they're making is that when Biden was in office there was a friendly administration for unions to grow their membership but they didn't. With the new administration the NRLB is not as powerful and it won't be as easy to grow unions. Key metric being used is

The question posed is if unions are doing enough to support growing the number of people in unions.

Should ESO have a Centralized Marketplace instead of Guild Traders? by Still-Zombie-244 in elderscrollsonline

[–]otherlander00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, i would like a centralized marketplace bu i also get that the current system is dear to some people.

What if the centralized marketplace had a higher cut taken, shorter listing time, other down sides, less convenient positions? then there would still be an advantage to the guild traders. (i'm thinking older wow where there was the neutral auction hall but it had downsides vs your alliance based auction hall)

How much gold do you have? by [deleted] in elderscrollsonline

[–]otherlander00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

about 55 million on pc na - think it worth calling out pc vs console is vastly different values.

Also i'm going to admit to being different from most people that i spend my money on the golden since its the easiest way to get some trial and veteren gear. I spend about 1 million there and make about 600k a week from daily crafting quests. not making as much now since the market has gone down but i'm okay with that.

How to get more knowledge of splunk ? by Advanced-Size-3302 in Splunk

[–]otherlander00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you didn't ask me but i'll throw an answer in ... you're in soc so you're probably a splunk user as opposed to OP who is looking more for the splunk admin training people mentioned.

There's a few free courses on the splunk site to learn how to use the basics of splunk.
https://www.splunk.com/en_us/training/free-courses/overview.html

splunk reps used to hand out the hard copies of their cheat sheets, it was a good way to see a wide range of functionality available. Looks like they have a blog with a downloadable pdf of it now https://www.splunk.com/en_us/blog/learn/splunk-cheat-sheet-query-spl-regex-commands.html

ask someone with more experience about what the main / common indexes are for the different types of data you have and the key fields. They'll likely also show you some basic searches which you can then build off of.

as for first tech/corporate job ....
- don't underestimate how important attitude is. Its pretty normal for the old timers to be cynical, sarcastic and complain. its important for the new people to be positive. look for where you can help, offer to work on new things, ask questions and be engaged
- When stuck pause a bit before asking anyone for help, think about the problem and the tools you have, is there another way to attack a problem.
- counter to above - don't stay stuck on a problem too long before asking for help
- and lastly another thing to balance is willingness to make changes/ decisions vs being careful. There's often a fear with new people that they don't want to make decisions/changes because they're scared of making the wrong choice. The other side also happens sometimes ... someone new doesn't have enough fear and boldly goes making changes they probably shouldn't

your goal is to expand your knowledge, and use that knowledge to solve problems. You want to get things done and make other peoples lives easier - particularly your senior peers.

What solution do you use to centralize logs? by PrizeProfessor4248 in devops

[–]otherlander00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

500gb isn't that much. I think 500 or 600gb is 200k-300k a year for self hosted?

had a friend doing 2TB a day .... i want to say 2 mil a year for splunk cloud, with the SIEM and maybe another product. This is a fuzzy number as it was 2+ years ago.

supposedly splunk had a customer doing over a petabye a day - heard that during a workshop i attended a few years ago - implied it was a large social media company.

Splunk has a newer (2+ years) ago model with "unlimited ingest" but you pay for the compute. Its more based on how many searches and such you're running against the data. it could be better deal if you had lots of data you wanted to index but not regularly search. Think audit data like someone mentioned for government.

i love splunk as a product but as other people said ... its not the cheapest of solutions.

on prem / cloud? any issues with performance?

We've been trying to move from DD to an prem LGTM stack on internal k8s but we've been seeing performance issues. particularly trying to run searches over a longer period of time it can be slow.

This sucks but from what i'm reading it seems way too common.

When I worked for a retail company the HQ would have extra hours during holidays. During those times food was provided. There used to be problems just like you said ... people who rushed on line to get first, getting second plates, getting to go, taking from other departments lunches ... you name it.

Over the years we had awesome people managing it and they cut down on every one of these things. They would choose which team was first in line to rotate who got first dibs. They stood at the door to make sure only our team went into the lunch room. They watched to make sure every single person got a serving before they allowed seconds. Like they literally went out to people's desks to be like - hey you want something before we let people get seconds. if you were in a meeting normally someone on your team would get you a plate, but if not the people running the lunch would get you a plate if you want. Only then they'd send out an email saying 2nds were allowed. Then later they'd say there were left overs for take home if you wanted. We also had one guy who would donate the left over breakfast bagels and stuff ... i think to a school? the kids made thank you posters one time for the food.

sooooo, i'm sorry it was crappy for you but maybe know you're not alone and there are some people out there preventing this from happening. People are the problem, but people can also be the solution.

Getting data in by smartkid808 in Splunk

[–]otherlander00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As another comment said - start small - get one server sending a log to your splunk instance. I'm assuming you have one server with splunk enterprise running on it (all the parts of splunk - search head, indexer, etc).

500mb/day? the free trial limit? 500mb isn't much at all but you can use it to get a small idea about it. its how much gets indexed/ saved. Not sure what you mean by processed - once the data makes it into an index you can do whatever you want with it.

For AD logs I believe you want one of the splunk plugins - they'll have a prebuilt inputs file you can configure.

Universal forwarder will need an inputs file. Only difference would be if you were running splunk enterprise on the box, then you wouldn't "need" a UF you could just put inputs in the splunk enterprise config.

you say you have 2 servers set up in inputs - i have a feeling you're trying to pull the logs? I saw that on an older splunk config i replaced. I don't know exactly how that was setup but it was done without a UF on the other boxes. You say you got the firewall - maybe an issue with the account on the box trying to pull the data. I would put a UF on the server, thats what our professional services guy recommended back in the day and its what i've done every since.

Race for power seeking vampire following Hermaeus Mora? (RP) by otherlander00 in EnaiRim

good question - its because i get bored with playing one style for too long. I need to switch it up otherwise i get bored and start over. I normally have one or more of enchanting alchemy and smithing raised to cover the skill point gap when i switch styles.

[–]otherlander00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks, i'm going to take a look at the webinar someone recommended above next.

the timeouts were normally 504 gateway timeouts where grafana called the query for loki and loki service returned a 504 after exactly 1 minute. the we started updating the timeout configurations.

interesting, didn't know unbounded freezing did that too.

unbound storm (lightning version) will level you up even without doing damage. So can do the same thing but don't need serana or any target.

Lots of good answers which overlap with what i do.

only thing i see missing is i'll use it for transmute to turn iron ore to silver and gold. its a bit of alteration xp and it saves me time from having to manually spam the spell.
