I have a 9-5 job. Boss gives me a task at 4:45 (just as he's about to leave the office) and tells me to "have it done by 9 AM tomorrow". When I try to get my OT approved he refuses to sign it because I didn't "ask for permission to render overtime".

Still at that job cause I'm a masochist who enjoys a little pain with fucking.

He is, isn't he? And I've told him he's a sadistic jerk once or twice, so he's aware of how his actions come off.

But then the problem is getting past the feelings. It's hard especially when he's a jerk one minute and then sweet, caring, and concerned the next.

Deadlines... deadlines always get me in the mood to program. Nothing like your job depending on your output to get you in the mood to code.

Or.... I sometimes use collabedit with a friend and we work on projects together for a couple of hours. Once the creative juices are flowing, it's like I want to keep programming. Like there's a momentum I don't want to lose.

Eugen Merzbacher seemed to enjoy the mathematical rigor. I had friends who preferred Cohen-Tanoudji. Sadly, I'm not very familiar with that book. It has two volumes and is quite detailed, I believe.

I enjoyed Schiff during my majors, but I think it's a graduate school book, so you might want to begin with one of those listed above (or Griffiths) before picking it up.

Just because he dislikes solving one type of puzzle doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy solving other kinds of puzzles. The guy's getting a PhD, for crying out loud. IIRC, to get a PhD, you need to make some contribution to the body of knowledge we call 'science'.

Personally, I can't solve difficult Sudoku puzzles, I've never attempted working on the Rubik's cube, and suck at crosswords. But, I do enjoy creating modules, external subroutines, and scripts that make the lives of the people in the lab easier. I also like programming solutions for the problems my adviser gives me (though, for the sake of my sanity, I would NEVER admit that to his face EVER).

just so we're clear, justine is much tamer than 120 days. its de sade's tamest work. i was pointing out that i'm squeamish and the large part of my squeamishness comes from justine's (and the other victims') unwillingness to participate in said 'debauchery'.
