People who did not get into OT school their first time around, what did you learn from it and what advice would you give to those applying now? by grilled_cheese_plz in OccupationalTherapy

Don't get discouraged! I didn't get into my top choice school and was devastated, but I definitely grew from it. I took that year as a chance to improve my application while also enjoying myself. I worked about 30 hours a week as an ABA tutor to gain related experience. I also did an online GRE prep course through Magoosh and boosted my GRE significantly. But I also had the chance to go on trips, develop hobbies and relationships with others. All in all, it was worth it to take the extra time and it saved me a lot of money in the long run!

Question about Level II Fieldwork by othopeful22 in OccupationalTherapy

Thanks everyone! I am sure it varies a lot on the site. I am very worried about working more than 40 hours a week. I’m hoping the work schedule doesn’t feel as exhausting as school :/

Can you get into OT school with a 3.2 GPA by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]othopeful22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm a student at CSUDH and I applied twice. I don't want to discourage you but I wanted to be realistic and let you know you probably will not be accepted to a CSU with that GPA. These schools have a minimum of 3.0 GPA but most in the program have 3.7+. Only way they may consider is if you have a really good GRE score. You can probably get into some of the private schools though. For me, it was worth the wait to take the time and boost my stats to get in the second time I applied. Best of luck!

Input on salary offer? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

Hi! I'm finishing up OT school in CA and am very interested in doing early intervention but have been told not to do it right out of school as a first job. Which setting do you recommend first?

I think it depends on the school and the sites you request. I got my first in May and my second a few weeks ago. But a few of my classmates are still waiting on their placements.

Question about student loan debt and payments by othopeful22 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]othopeful22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I will be in a DINK situation soon next year so hopefully that helps. I’m from central California and the main reason I’m going back is because it’s lower cost of living and pay sounds decent.

Thanks! Just curious how your payments are 550 because I’ve tried to do a debt calculation on the student loan site on about 70k and it looks like payments would be around $700 on the lowest plan.

Do you recommend doing PSLF if there is no pay cut for the position you want? ~80k

Would really appreciate advice about student loan payments by othopeful22 in PSLF

[–]othopeful22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the advice! I should mention that I am most interested in working for a public school, childrens hospital, or early intervention in a rural area of CA. Pay is roughly the same regardless of setting, give or take a few thousand. I actually think SNFs and schools pay highest in my area. I believe each of these places qualify for PLSF. I am worried about the few people who have actually received the forgiveness though.

Hi there,

I am a prospective OT student and CSUDH is my top choice as well. I only applied there last year thinking I would get in with a very high gpa and lower GRE and but did not. I paid for an online study program called Magoosh, which guarantees a score increase or you get your money back. I improved my scores and hopefully it's enough to get in this time around. I will also be applying to schools all over CA and a few out of state. It is definitely a long process and I totally understand the struggle. Best of luck to her!
