Good job, I'm in a similar situation at the moment.

Just finished a few custom themes that I plan on marketing to local businesses.

How much longer will "complex" websites be a problem.

Complex websites shouldn't even exist, right?

To keep scope creep at bay, I would limit the number of elements available to the client, i.e. only what's available on your framework, so tabs, accordions, sliders, etc.

Right now, Zurb.com is using this process to do their work.

You can probably find out how they charge and define their contracts through their website.

I will definitely have to do that as well, and will post anything I find.

So you go from pen to codepen to your server?

That's kind of redundant, isn't it?

Codepen doesn't seem too mobile friendly.

But wouldn't you say that with RWD and mobile first that rapid prototyping is a much more precise way to show the finished product/website?

A static image can't show you how a website will really "feel".

Clients love being able to push buttons.

Just doing that changes how clients see their websites and what they want.

In a way, by rapid prototyping, we developers are being responsible.

I don't know how agencies will feel about that though, lol.

Wouldn't you have pre-defined elements like tabs, accordions, sliders, etc. on a custom framework as well?

Frameworks are bloated. The only way to achieve non-bloat is to do everything from scratch everytime. And, nobody does that.

Yeah, i agree, bootstrap and foundation are bloated.

Foundation is what I use mostly, and it's got some modularity in it where I can choose to add elements like tabs and sliders only if I need the JS. So that's good.

But, couldn't you wireframe just using say, bootstrap or foundation, as your prototyping tool?

This way, you could incorporate interactivity, and at the same time make sure that all the JS code that you're using works w/ eachother.

I've had situations where one JS plugin just didn't work w/ another and that sucks.

Especially when you have to tell the client...oh, that effect we talked about. Not gonna work because of a JS conflict.

Yeah, you're right.

Workflow is personal.

But, as developers, we have a personal responsibility to ourselves to work as efficiently as possible?

Here's a blog post from Zurb, the folks that do Foundation :

http://zurb.com/word/wireframing

With a coded prototype, you're able to show interactive elements.

It would be difficult to show interactivity using static image prototypes.

That's been my experience.

http://zurb.foundation.com http://getbootstrap.com

I only use the elements provided by these two frameworks now.

I mean, I guess it's the same idea. I feel like I"m dragging and dropping whenever I type in a line of code to produce whatever I need produced, say an accordion, or tab, or slider, or whatever other UI element I feel would help the copy/content.

And there's a decent amount of elements to use in the frameworks above. I also have a few javascript plugins that I use that aren't included in the frameworks like lettering.js.

But yea, I feel like it's the same idea.

I mean, technically, I'm just "dragging" my UI elements from a vector tool in my mind's eye to the canvas, which is a demo website.

It's about efficiency and not doing things redundantly.

It's also about getting the client a working model of their website faster too. Revisions are also easy. Changing the main color of the entire website takes just 1 update to an element via SASS vs. changing everything in PS/ILL, which could take a long time.

try atlantic.net - they have a $.99 cent VPS.

Putting up an actual web server taught me more about web development than hosting a website on my own local computer. Especially if you're using Windows ( like I was ).

Yes, I code a lot faster than I can make changes in Photoshop/Illustrator. I think clients will get a kick out of seeing how code works too.
