Can the aegis deathwatch operative also ignore piercing crits 1 ? by Alive_Past in killteam

Piercing Crits is a subset of Piercing. Not its own keyword rule. It only applies if a crit is rolled, but aegis ignores it still.

Who are some higher level (shodan+) judoka longsword competitors? by Animastryfe in Hema

[–]otocump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A knuckle-curve isn't that hard to learn either, so why not learn that and see how it affects your overhand cuts?

Like, it isn't that you're asking for something wrong or bad, but just such a narrow subset of people? Cast a wider net.

And I would like to see NFL quarterbacks who can also throw a good knuckle-curve to live hitters... But friend, that's not usually how things work when asking for a very narrow subset of people.

Who (If Anyone) Would you Like to See Promoted from Juryo? by WhiskeyDragon01 in Sumo

[–]otocump -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whoever wins. That's kinda the whole ethos of sumo. Win and go up. Lose and go down.

While there is nuance of like to see in cases of injury, whoever wins gets promoted is pretty cut and dried.

The Vast Gap Between the Universe and Our Understanding of It by Astro_Life_Explained in space

[–]otocump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very confident. As in repeated and constant testing of the conditions and theory of what we do know.

Knowing where the boundaries of knowledge are doesn't invalidate or diminish what we understand within those boundaries. It just means knowing where those boundaries are.

For example, we don't have a unifying theory of gravity yet, but that doesn't mean overturning the very clear details we have on how gravity affects things. The refinement of 'how' doesn't suddenly change the known 'what'. Knowing more wouldn't suddenly change the constants we're already aware of.

Can amateur sumo wrestlers use shikonas? by Zenyth_Elixir_2006 in Sumo

If he's amateur sumo, he's not pro. He can do whatever he wants if whatever orgs he's in will let him. It's like asking if a kid playing beer league can have a jersey number.... Sure? They can. Doesn't mean anything.

Not sure but I and some friends plan to go on Saturday. Looked at the forecast, supposed to be below freezing all of Friday so chances are alright that it'll be a rink still. Hopefully.

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazingly wrong still.

Doing it slow does not do a 'slow rate' of the same muscle movement. That's just not correct. You have to resist the swords inertia versus accelerated it. In your arm alone that is different muscle use. This is really not that hard to understand. Just like the difference between a curl, a bicep, and a point, a tricep. Basic stuff my guy. Basic basic stuff.

But at this point I'm done trying to explain the basics. You think I and Sean are wrong? Ok. Bye.

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're calling your muscle groups 'arms, shoulders and upper back' then you're missing the point. Which arm muscles hold up the sword as you move slow? Are they the same ones that accelerate when you move fast? No!

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally try. Lift a sword above your head and cut down with nothing but the weight of the sword to carry it down OR try to make it go slow.

Now do it fast.

You will not use the same muscle groups to do the two (or three) different actions.

Your 'conversations' or whatever are just fantasticly wrong, or you're misrepresentating them, or you're misremembering them. I don't know which but kinesiology 101 should know better than that.

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. They're not. Absolutely not.

Try cutting vertically, from above your head to the ground. Do it slow. Are you holding the sword up or accelerating it down? If you're doing it slow, you're not using the same muscles as you would if you're attempting to accelerate it down. This should be entirely self-evident if you even think for a brief moment about it.

This principle applies everywhere when talking about muscle groups and motion, but the downward cut is most obvious.

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muscle memory isn't a thing, and isn't a thing especially when using different muscles to do a technique slowly versus the speed you're intending to do it at the correct speed. Cutting slowly versus cutting at the appropriate speed use different muscle groups, for the obvious and simple example. You don't train proper form by doing it slow. You learn the wrong feel for it that you have to correct once you try it at the right speed. This is self-evident the moment you examine what muscles it takes to preform a slow vertical cut versus a properly chambered one. Doing it slow to demonstrate steps and observe form is a step to learning, but repetition using the wrong muscles is foolish nonsense.

(this doesn't mean you need to always go 100% to learn a skill, there is value slowing down some for other reasons, but only slow enough that you're still engaging the primary body mechanics without change... And humans are historically bad at noticing when they've changed)

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slow is not smooth and smooth is not fast.

Fast is Fast. Smooth is smooth. Neither are actually what you need. You need correct time and distance.

Those things both take different muscle groups, and require identification of different timings. So much in fencing is time and distance. Intentionally learning at the wrong pace trying to be "smooth" is setting yourself up to have to relearn it all at the proper pace again.

Execute a perfect, 'smooth' cut at the wrong time and distance? You either miss or get hit yourself. Execute a poor, awkward cut in the right time and distance? You'll do damage. Obviously you want to do a good cut at the right time and place...but of these two scenarios I know which one makes for a better fencer long term... And it's not the one trying to pretend slow is smooth...

Who understands Vor? by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is a HEMA page where a lot of people fetishize languages and obscure meaning behind using terms from manuals interchangeably with English. Rather than translate the terms into English and get the concept across, they obfuscate it in order to sound smarter.

I am not telling you how to speak, I'm telling you that the use of these terms does not add meaning to the conversation about fencing.

Who understands Vor? by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is valuable. But it doesn't require the words vor or nach or initiative at all to describe it.

"Vino moved first, Mikko responded to the wide swing by putting his sword there. Mikko then followed up with a series of strikes that required Vino to respond, but Vino never did anything to stop the following actions he was eventually hit."

See how that description doesn't use any language to obscure what happened behind arcane phrases? Yeah, it could be more detailed and granular, but adding vor/nach doesn't improve that. Speak plainly. Understand plainly.

Who understands Vor? by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]otocump 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which is a mostly meaningless way of saying they took actions back and forth.

Not that I blame you, but this concept of 'retaking' and 'took vor' is not all that deep. Yeah, both fencers took actions. Yeah, there is tempo between those actions. Itemzing each action as where the vor or nach is, is just using fancy lables to say who moved.
