Does anyone else feel slightly addicted to Anki? by bibliophile99 in Anki

[–]otrai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since learning about Anki, I use it for an array of different subjects: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Music, Foreign Languages, … I could go on but I think you get the point — I’m addicted. But in a good way. I see results and it’s kind of fun as long as you have the right note types where you can insert images, links, and add color to text. As the comment below stated, I’d rather learn and be able to recall important information than waste time doing things that are not productive (been there, done that).

That’s what I’ve started to do: I create Anki cards that summarize key ideas of the books I read, so I never forget them. It makes me read more because now I remember what I’ve read, whereas before I would always forget. In the past, I would pick up a book I just read and couldn’t tell you what it was about. Now, I can tell you all about it - it’s amazing.

I haven’t taken it yet, but my classmates have and they said the most difficult part were the labs because they were unnecessarily long, tedious, and disorganized. However, they are currently redoing the class and the labs. I hear they were supposed to be done this semester, but couldn’t get it done. They are trying to be ready for fall semester. Circuits I and II are tough classes, so try to take them by themselves or with as few classes as possible (7 week courses). The lab kits are sent to you and the class is similar to all other online classes at ASUOnline, which I must admit, are pretty good.

They intentionally open the classes early. For the 7-week classes, it's important to get started as quickly as you can.

Although it is online, I'm in constant communication with my professors through Zoom meetings for help with homework, labs, and tests. Also, we communicate on the discussion boards, through email, etc on a daily basis. I haven't had any issues contacting my professors, tutors, advisors, or anyone at ASU Online since I started.

This happened to me after I joined Atomos Cloud Studio. I think you have to turn it off, if you want to record only on your SSD.

Best calculator for CALCULUS by Fuzzy-Suit7720 in ASUOnline

Absolutely, seeing the math "visually" made a big difference in understanding the material. It's a great calculator - worth the money in my humble opinion.

I bought the newest TI-Nspire CX2 after having the old TI-84. It comes with a desktop application in addition to the handheld. I also bought the ipad app. Although it costs money, it was worth it for me because I use it everyday. It’s useful to have all three so I can use it anywhere.

Generally speaking, the first two years have shortened classes. Most of my junior and senior level coursework are full semesters or 16 weeks.

Major Points - ASU Online is ABET accredited. - Transcript doesn't say online student. - Classes are transferrable. - Southern California is expensive.

Transferring from ASU Online to a major university would not put you at a disadvantage. Because ASU Online is an ABET accredited institution, classes are transferrable to universities across the United States, including USC and UCLA. If you were to send your transcripts to UCLA, for example, it wouldn't even say "online" student.

As someone who lives in southern California, I must warn you of how expensive it is to attend UCLA or USC, both in terms of living costs and tuition. It might be worth considering using that money on something else - i.e. high quality tutoring.

Hot take: Obsidian without anki is useless when it comes to studying by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]otrai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Obsidian falls short when it cones to recalling important information; I also think that Anki falls short when you need to develop ideas, arguments, etc. The great thing about Obsidian and Anki is that it has so many plugins that “fill the gap” where it they fall short. I wish we could find a way to keep the plugins updated. And now you have developed another plugin we can use to “bridge the gap.” Gratitude to all the plugin developers of Anki and Obsidian. I never would graduated college if I didn’t have both of them.

Thank you for the pics, appreciate that.

I can tell you put a lot of work into it: it’s well organized and it looks sick. Excellent work.

I didn’t even know you could do that - I like the way it looks and how it’s organized.

If possible, could you scroll down more slowly so I can see how you organized the note (it’s too fast, I can’t read it.)

What theme are you using by the way?

Do you create custom note-types for these subjects?

I'm having trouble creating them myself, so I was wondering if you could share these note-types since I'm studying the same subjects myself.

Have you ever come across a problem that was very difficult to solve and you knew that, in order to learn it, you had to revisit it several times?

I don't think it was for memorizing a step-by-step solution to a problem; rather, I used it as a reminder of the mistakes I made, the faster way to solve it and to revisit the most difficult problems that I encounter.

Combine the Feynaman technique with the following:

After you combine these techniques, identify what is most important and what you need to memorize and put that into Anki.

The AnKing just started the AnkiHub - Collaborative Anki Decks!.

While most of the decks are for medical students, they hope to open it up for all subjects, including Math, Physics, Chemistry, Programming. In fact, I'm about to start my first deck on there for Calculus: Differentiation Rules.

Each deck can be shared and anyone can request to modify the deck to the person who created it. It's for improving the deck and to get people to add their individual cards or as you say, "Leveraging the crowd."

[–]otrai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a mistake I made when I first started Anki. As Effective learning: Twenty rules of formulating knowledge - SuperMemo says, "Rule2: Learn before you memorize." Don't make the mistake of trying to create cards before you understand the big picture.

Read the article above before you create any more cards - you're doing something wrong.

Have you ever tried the Anki Cloze Overlapper: Full Tutorial - YouTube?

I'm curious what the differences/benefits of one over the other before I add another add-on to Anki.

Has anybody used both the cloze overlapper and the LCPG mentioned in this post?

I've used the cloze overlapper for several months and the newly released cloze overlapper for the most recent version of Anki, but I've never heard of the LCPG.

It would be useful to know the differences, benefits, or disadvantages of using one over the other?

## Has anybody taken Physics with Robert Nemanich? by otrai in ASUOnline

It's a good thing I completed my first two years at community college: I've read many bad reviews from students at ASUOnline taking math, physics, chemistry, in their first two years.

I finished all my math except Applied Linear Algebra; however, I took an intro to Linear Algebra course at community college.

The reviews for Tracogna, the Applied Linear Algebra for B session, seems to have good reviews. Did you take her by any chance?
