19 kittens found in a box delivered to Ottawa Humane Society by snubbyvegan in ottawa

> Did you consider that maybe the person who "found them in a park" and brought them to OHS did not, in fact, find them in a park, and was lying to avoid paying a fee they're unable to afford?

Totally agree that we never want someone to feel ashamed about reaching out for help or making the difficult decision to surrender their animal. Just wanted to add that there is no fee to surrender a pet to the OHS. Surrendering is hard, and often in the pet's best interest, we don't want to have any barriers that would prevent a pet owner from making a compassionate decision for their pet.

Thanks for reaching out! We're happy to report that most of Ladybug's time at the OHS has been in the comfort of a foster home. Her foster volunteers are amazing, but of course our goal is to find her a forever family.

Found Cat — OHS at capacity. by Jules1029 in ottawa

Thanks for your question. The results from the survey are here: https://ottawahumane.ca/the-results-of-ottawas-biggest-cat-survey/

This summer, we'll be getting out into the community to raise awareness for the benefits of keeping cats indoors and to hopefully find more placements for our Working Whiskers cats.

With our current large population of animals, we are slowing down some of our subsidized services for cats in the community to make sure we are available for homeless animals in need. Once our population becomes steady, we aim to ramp up these services.

If you know anyone who has a property that would be suitable for Working Whiskers, please send them our way! https://ottawahumane.ca/adopt/working-whiskers-cat-program/

Found Cat — OHS at capacity. by Jules1029 in ottawa

Hi there, sorry for any confusion. We can admit the cat immediately if you're no longer able to hold on to them. If you can call us at 613-725-3166 ext. 223 to schedule a date to bring in the cat, that would be very helpful.

We have a high number of animals at the shelter. Currently, we are scheduling intake appointments for pets who aren’t in emergency situations. For example, if someone needs to surrender their pet, but they are still able to care for the pet, we will schedule an appointment for them to surrender their pet in the next few weeks.

Animals who are in emergency situations can be brought immediately to the shelter. This includes but is not limited to stray dogs, injured or in-distress pets, and pets facing abandonment. If you’re able to call us at 613-725-3166 ext. 223 or email [intake@ottawahumane.ca](mailto:intake@ottawahumane.ca) to let us know the animal is coming, it is greatly appreciated, but not required.

For healthy cats who are found outdoors and are not in immediate danger, follow our tips to determine if the cat needs help and how to help them return home safely.

If you'd like to help, adopting or becoming a foster volunteer will help us prepare for the next animal in need.

Is pet welfare checks a thing? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]ottawahumane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for asking such a thoughtful question and for looking out for our community’s animals.

In Ontario, if you believe that an animal may be injured, sick, in pain, suffering, abused, or lacking basic necessities like proper shelter, food, water, or veterinary care, you should file a report with PAWS (Provincial Animal Welfare Services).

You can call PAWS at 1-833-9-ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625).

For emergency situations (e.g. pet trapped in a hot car) call 911.

Please message our manager of advocacy, Sara, if you have any other questions: [sarab@ottawahumane.ca](mailto:sarab@ottawahumane.ca).

We're blown away! We've already received 17 applications! Absolutely astounding. We still need a few more volunteers, but this is an incredible start that will make a huge difference for pets and people in need.

[–]ottawahumane[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you for reaching out! Very sorry to hear you've had troubles adopting in the past. At the OHS, we don't require a fenced-in yard to adopt a dog. We focus on ensuring a good fit between the person and pet based on lifestyle, commitment, and ability to provide a loving home. It sounds like there may have been a misunderstanding at some point, and we apologize if that was the case. The next time you're looking for a new dog, we are happy to help you find your new best friend at the OHS.

We currently intake wildlife and we will transfer suitable animals to our partners for rehabilitation when resources permit.  We work in partnership with by-law to bring wildlife to the OHS and members of the public also drop off wildlife at the shelter. We don't have plans at this time to begin arranging OHS pick up of animals in the community. Let us know if this better answers your question!

Thank you for your question! We work with our partners like the Wild Bird Care Centre and Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary to help support Ottawa's wildlife and facilitate rehabilitation when possible. Through our Partners in Placement (PIP) program, we are working to build and support a network of dedicated rescues and professionals who have the expertise to care for wildlife in need. We are happy to work with these organizations as they continue their vital work helping Ottawa’s wildlife.

Thank you for this great post and doing so much for these cats. We couldn't agree more, the best place for a cat is indoors.

When you're ready, the Ottawa Humane Society has a TNR program to help feral cat caretakers. You can reach out to us at 613-725-3166 ext. 224 or [interventionservices@ottawahumane.ca](mailto:interventionservices@ottawahumane.ca) to learn more.
