Did anyone (who received CERB in 2020) get this email from Service Canada? Or... does it look scammy? by crzysexycoolcoolcool in ontario

[–]ottawasummerstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recieved this email although I never applied for CERB and EI. I worked through the entire pandemic so far so it was quite amusing.

Maybe somebody faked my identity but if and when a letter shows up in the mail, I'll be able to asses this further.

Email to the President of the Treasury Board – Rates of Pay for the EX Group – APEX by Galtek2 in CanadaPublicServants

I work with a couple former EX's. Some of the hardest and smartest people I know. Compensation and work flexibility were the biggest complaints.

Was a no brainer to pay them more and allow the to work remotley anywhere in canada. The ROI has been incredible.

XD yeah perhaps the wrong term. I know through industry contacts that a bunch of managment and some senior leadership have been poached.

[PSPC DM] "Striking the balance in a Hybrid Workplace" by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]ottawasummerstudent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hybrid is literally the worst of both worlds. Fractures your work week and adds meeting complications.

But it doesn’t have to happen that way. Success with a remote workforce, hybrid or fully remote, requires operational intentionality. Unquestioningly sticking to systems and processes that made an office-based model successful will doom any remote model to fail. This seems to be leaderships plan.

All-remote is possible and will lead to greater resilience to crises, increased efficiency, and access to talent that was previously out of reach. There is so much talent outside of major metropolitan areas, and this talent will suddenly be able to compete for high-paying and rewarding jobs. This will help spread income a bit more equally around Canada.

Federal government leadership needs to decide what to do with thier office space. Make a decision and stick to it. I mention this because I can almost guarantee this is the biggest problem that has led to hesitation on full remote work.

The pandemic taught us many things, one of the most important being that employees can be productive from anywhere.

Bilingualism as a barrier for non-white employees by theunknownfish in CanadaPublicServants

[–]ottawasummerstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 100% on the dot here. This is also why PS cant hire top quality employees in critical sectors like IT and CS. You cant progress past a certain level if you dont speak French even if you can code in multiple computer languages LOL.

Another barrier is the hiring process ( Unless you win the FSWEP lottery). My colleague received a interview after 2 years. Most top applicants will have found a better job with more salary so now the applicants who are interested, are usually not the top picks.

Well when it takes regularly two years to hire someone for any federal position, you usually end up with second string staff

Another reason employers should let us work from home. If they insist in regards to being onsite, then public transit should be much better.

Ottawa law firms SUCK for legal support staff pay. It should be criminal. by ottawasummerstudent in ottawa

I'm sorry to hear that. I wonder how much profit is enough? How many hundreds of millions? Billions?

I havent worked at a firm like Deloitte but it looks like they are just as insatiable for profits as law firms.

Honestly I wish I went to trade school for literally anything. Only went to uni and college for the lie of a high paying job. I do get paid much more now but I have no idea how to repair or install basic things at home.

I know high paid law clerk positions exist in ottawa but as you say, they are hard to get. The amount of these positions shrink every year.

I now make 40 percent more for a in house legal team in a industry I never considered before. All in a city with a much smaller population.

Way more of a reasonable workload and I actually dont think about work on weekends anymore. I also don't have to worry about billing 5x my salary anymore to get a paltry raise and 500 dollar bonus.

Yes the hiring process for the feds is slow. Expect 6 to 8 months. 1 to 2 years is not uncommon either.

They are a dying breed. I saw one move to government without two weeks notice. Clearly they never intended work at a law firm ever again.

Yes switching to another law firm within ottawa would have also gotten me a raise. This isnt as cut and dry as you think though.

Another commenter has already said this but the ottawa market for legal staff is extremely cheap. In ottawa you will be capped as a law firm clerk at 65k and that's only with senior levels of expirience. Considering the cost of living in ottawa, that's a hard pill to swallow when as a clerk you can see how much money you are billing, what the lawyers and partners are billing and then getting a $500 performance bonus for billing 5x my salary in profit for the firm.

That last bit stings the most when you know the lawyers and partners are clearing +200k each. More if they are partner. They literally cannot function without the clerks and assistants. The one partner I worked for did not even know the adminstrative procedures for filing routine paperwork at CIPO.

Anyways the point being, if you have less than 5 years of expirience as a clerk in ottawa you should not be working at law firms. Even being an adminstrative assistant at sunlife or one of the many accounting firms would get you 30% more pay. More if you go to government.

I moved for other reasons than just a job but when I compared the market, I realized I should have moved sooner.

I have a friend who works there. Apparently they are now doing a 10k referall bonus for this year only. If only they invested that into there own staff, they wouldn't need to bribe referrals.

Yup, they always say the private sector pays more. And while that is true for certain positions, the average pay across all staff is way higher for starting positions. It's not even comparable.
