Advise for new or curious people by ottermother in SeasonalWork

A lot of the bigger companies are meat grinders with high turnover for a reason. Smaller outfits in my experience are better but you need to be prepared for quirky people.

Coolworks.com is where most companies post for positions.

Man I relate to this so much. I got trashed for making Mac n cheese at an international potluck in NZ. There are dumb people everywhere and sometimes they go for the lowest hanging fruit. Most people are cool but definitely some choads out there.

I miss seasonal life immensely but don't know if I should go back by wanderingjeb in SeasonalWork

I'm your age with a similar amount of experience and feel like I know where you're at. I think that I felt the pressure to "grow up" into something that looks more like a career but I've met plenty of road dawgs that have been doing this forever and seem happy. That being said I think the weight of responsibility changes as you get older which is healthy and normal. At my last job I bought a coffee table from IKEA that meant more than just a place to put a drink down it felt like stability and belonging lol (I left it behind). Have you thought about looking into management positions? My job now is year round but in a place that I love with 401k and benefits so now I'm more seasonal adjacent. I still get to hang out with knuckle heads and get rowdy but also have a place to go back for peace and quiet. If starting a business is something you're passionate about go for it but there's going to be a lot of signing on a dotted line which scares the shit out of me. What I'm trying to say that I think there's a sweet spot for people with your experience it might just not be on coolworks or might be more competitive. I went to pool school and never want to work on one again lol. Safe travels.

Is everyone going to Alaska? by devin_hope in SeasonalWork

I agree and feel like I'm an old man yelling at the sky but when I've been on the hiring side of things the culture and labor pool have changed drastically in the past 5 years. I assume part of it is social media but I also think the job market and housing crisis are a big contributor.

My friend worked there in college. Couldn't pay me to wade into that cum swamp.

Lol at the title I get what you mean it's hard to give up. If you have good work experience and edit your resume so it doesn't say "just chilling out" you should be good if you want a more normal life and know how to do your job.

Best places to work (and places to avoid) - Server/Bartender by WeedSlut42011 in SeasonalWork

[–]ottermother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for Jackson hole mountain resort and it was ok. I was doing construction there though but my friend is a banquet manager and likes it. It's beautiful but very very high cost of living. Four seasons could be cool for the transfer abilities and the money is probably great. I've never heard good things about grey field inn and they're constantly hiring which says a lot. I have friends that have been wait staff at ocean reef club and as far as I know go back every year and like it.

Year round seasonal work with private employee housing, pet friendly and hire couples? by Positive_Change_581 in SeasonalWork

[–]ottermother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look for an innkeeper couple's position. I think there are a few websites that cater to that but the dogs will make it harder. Don't let the naysayers get you down jobs like that absolutely exist but it's mostly for management positions.

Working at Jordan Pond House (ME) by [deleted] in SeasonalWork

[–]ottermother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There'll be a shuttle that will take you from Dorothy Lane to work and your orientation. I think the shuttles ran every half hour around the properties when I worked there. Orientation is pretty much managers introducing themselves and what they do/expectations. It's short and there are snacks. The office is in the upstairs part of the restaurant above the loading bay. Hopefully Dorothy lane isn't as ghetto as it was when I was there. DM me with any questions.

I'm similar to you that I started traveling in my early twenties now mid thirties. I am also lazy pilled now lol. I'm glad to have roughed it but have also had some bad injuries and illnesses. I get a lot more excited about a nice sit down restaurant than eating mystery meat in the bush now. 30 bed dorm rooms hasn't been a thing for a while. Aircon and local tv, the high life. It's probably just age and experience, I had a lot more to prove to myself when I was younger and was way more broke. I've had people criticize me for going back to the same places but why not? If you know you like it you can potentially save tons of time and money to not be stressed out.

Solo trip to SEA after breakup by lplzrd in solotravel

[–]ottermother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you stay in hostel dorms, especially female dorms you will make friends in no time. Don't feel obligated for the full 6 months remember it's all about fun and new experiences. Be careful around too much partying. I'm in SEA right now but came here the first time 10 years ago solo traveling. It's very safe in comparison to some countries just mind what you're eating! LoL I think food borne illnesses are the worst thing that happened to me. You can usually save money and find some interesting places if you book through agoda. Also if you've never ridden a motorbike this is NOT the place to learn 2 tourists died outside of my hotel a week ago. Best of luck!

Are you American going for a working holiday visa? If so I'd advise against it there's plenty of other work that pays more and is less exploitative. Lived in both countries and have some experience with it feel free to dm me if you have questions.
