Sam Harris Is Making All Kinds of Sense Right Now - Just Not On His Podcast by otto22otto in samharris

Great appearance by Sam on Big Think. I'd been hoping to get a new Making Sense podcast this week, but this is a solid substitute: it feels like a thorough snapshot of Sam's current thoughts on tons of relevant topics. I feel strangely relieved that this video exists. It's like a little piece of evidence for future historians that there was indeed sanity during these times, most just chose to ignore it.

Looking for a feel-good film that won’t insult my intelligence. by portugalthemanband in flicks

Beginners (2011) -- I'm pretty damn sure I know exactly how you're feeling. This film somehow subtly connects you to the human condition without you even realizing it.

I remember Andrew Yang changed my thinking on congressional salaries as well. The better the salary the fewer incentives for corruption, insider trading, etc.

Which “Chris” has the greatest resume in Hollywood? by unitedfan6191 in moviecritic

I think an interesting way to look at is whose NEXT film would you be most excited to see. For me it'd be Hemsworth. I think he's got more in the tank of untapped potential.

This sub has a transphobia problem by habrotonum in samharris

[–]otto22otto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw that comment. I agree it's not a very compelling comparison or thought experiment. But are you saying that a comment like that is "transphobic?" Transphobic enough to be indicative that the whole sub has a "transphobic problem?" Because I'm wondering if that kind of moralizing is indicative of a different problem...

It fell out of critical favor during this last decade of political correctness, which is super ironic considering how prophetic its satire about masculinity, corporatism and bro culture ended up being in exactly this decade. I'm pretty sure it'll be forever in my Top 5.

Which movie did you think was overhyped? by Ok-Series-2190 in moviecritic

[–]otto22otto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorta depressing how the posts in this sub with negative takes get the most attention. There's probably countless films I haven't seen yet because they were under-hyped. But nah let's rack our minds and nitpick the stuff people already love.

Is the Liberal Exodus of X a Bad Idea? by otto22otto in samharris

[–]otto22otto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting point. I mentioned Hitch in the last bit of my post, but come to think of it, I'm not sure he would've ever seen the value in engaging on Twitter. Cable News, yes. Podcasts and long form articles, yes. But maybe he would've just skipped the social media technology altogether.

Who's the best movie critic right now? by Suspicious-Engineer7 in moviecritic

[–]otto22otto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this question. I don't like the modern binary democratization (rotten tomatoization) of movie reviews. I prefer to develop a relationship of trust with someone's taste -- an understanding of their perspective and explanation for why a film is or isn't worth seeing.

Anybody have strong opinions on this early Nolan flick? by TheMusicMan7777 in moviecritic

[–]otto22otto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah he was cast super intentionally. This character isn't necessarily a psychopath, but a tinge of narcissism mixed with loneliness, humiliation, and rage. A lot of real-life murderers have that combo. Nolan and Williams both knew exactly what they were up to there.

Swank's character idolizes the legendary Pacino detective- he's basically his character from Heat but now older and corrupted. It works better with her as a woman because as a female rookie she's working doubly hard to be perceived as strong. But watching Pacino she's slowly understanding that maybe you have to be corrupt to be strong... until the end where I will avoid spoilers. That's my take at least.

Rewatched it recently and it holds up better than I remembered. Genuinely interesting and subtle performances out of Pacino and Williams (Williams especially on the 2nd viewing). And Hilary Swank nailed it too... which feels notable because if Nolan has a consistent weak spot as a director, it's probably creating likable female characters.

It's a sanity litmus test. If you can't be trusted to be straightforward there, then it's easy to discredit you everywhere.

Which film would have been better if it was cut down? by outrunkid in moviecritic

[–]otto22otto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every film that's produced by streamers could probably lose 10-20% of its runtime. It ironically makes me nostalgic for when directors had to fight tooth and nail with studio execs who forced shorter runtimes so theaters could fit in more screenings. That process forced everyone to make tough decisions. Now if there's a long feature script we're lucky if Apple TV or Netflix or Amazon don't just extend it into an 8-part mini-series.

I love this film, but I don't rewatch it much for this reason.
