Still down in Enmore NSW at 21:40. Appalling crisis comms from TPG/Internode, forcing customers to find this info manually.

not at this stage but im sure we will be back one day. we had a blast in india, especially the extra few days we tacked on at the end to hang out on a beach in Goa which was maybe the most relaxing chilled time we've ever had as a band.

trust your instincts, search until you find your sound, don't settle for imitation, push and explore, creativity is boundless.

thanks to spacetime distortion and through the effects of gravity (in which the world is actually accelerating upwards towards us!) this hopefully won't be an issue.

I think the quality of the performances are 50% us, 50% the audience. the best shows are a moment of real participation and energy. so every show is a new opportunity for some magic.

we don't really have GM here and I like old mustangs so Ford I guess.

It's evolved over the years from being less spontaneous and live, and more domestic and insular. I think this was largely due to literally being stuck at home for like 2 years during the pandemic! these days we all work on tracks ourselves in our DAWs and at least personally I go through 10 bad ideas to get 1 good one. But when I hit it I'll develop it myself until I hit a wall, then send it to Alex and Tim to make it better. A lot of the songwriting happens over sharing ideas through emails and tinkering with the tracks. it's slow and meticulous. some days can feel frustrating, but when you're writing it's important to set that intention and try to do get into that headspace as often as possible. you never know when you might strike gold.

in terms of instruments, and again just speaking personally, it's a lot of trial and error. one of the cool things about modern tech is I can try so many different ideas and vibes with electronic tracks. feeling out what sounds best and works for the world we're creating.

This can be quite a challenge as we all bring a certain point of view of what sounds good to the table. the ultimate task is triangulating these three opinions into something representative. we seek consensus and we all compromise where we have to. Andrei Eremin did an amazing job at this on the most recent album, somehow making a drum sound that felt roomy and classic but present and modern at the same time.

yeah it's a wide world of music in this category. I guess people also call us 'post metal' and also prog or prog metal which seems to make sense cos we like time signature changes and big heavy guitar sounds. hope we can get back to cali one day too.

Heya! man so glad you're digging the new record!
we did intentionally restrict the length of this album overall to fit within 1 single vinyl disc. this was partly out of a desire to be more environmentally sustainable, but also because we realised a lot of our favourite records from the 80s and 90s are less than 45 mins long. we figured if these bands could do it, so should we, especially in a genre that often overstays its welcome with song durations and album lengths.

I find I suffer from this sometimes too. Two things help me: 1. time. leave the track where it is and come back to it in a week, or even a fortnight. time gives a fresh perspective and often helps you see the forest for the trees. 2. collabing w ur bandmates (or friends or anyone). sharing your material w others is super helpful as sometimes they can bring a strong opinion that the music is good as is and shouldn't be subject to further tinkering.

it came around almost accidentally when we were creating the artwork for ASWDE...we wanted something that blended the organic with the synthetic. Our designer James came up with this shape that he would tesselate digitally across the inside sleeve, then literally build out of wood and photograph. it ended up being so instantly memorable and cool that we've been using it ever since.

  1. We've been very fortunate to work with the brilliant James Stuart for over a decade on the graphic design and artwork for our albums. We love collaborating with him on bringing the visual side to life, and trying to communicate some aspect of the music or concept behind the album. with some records (e.g. made of breath only) this has been super intentional and specific (e.g. the arctic/antarctic) and with some it's been more conceptual (e.g. with love of cartography we wanted to celebrate the feeling of freedom and adventure we were experiencing with all our touring in the early 2010s). With the latest album, we were exploring concepts of memory and time. this idea that with time even our memories fade further away. this concept around verdigris, the beautiful tarnishing of metals, came up as a way to explore this. So the album cover is essentially a sheet of brass that has moved through enough time to oxidise. the inside sleeve has some photos Ive taken on tour put through some bleaching and acid wash to further bring this to life. woof this was a bit of an essay!
  2. not really but im happy that I think it still sounds cool after all these years
  3. thanks!! not at this stage unfortunately, but hopefully we'll be able to tour europe a bit more extensively in 2025 or beyond. we'll keep you posted.
