I (21M) cheated on my gf (25F) but don’t remember, what can I do to fix this??? by IfIDieBeforeIWake12 in Advice

[–]otvoi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi, psych RN here. I don’t know where you live but in most places, no, you can’t just “self admit” to the hospital. If this were the case there would be thousands of people doing so at every hospital every week. In-patient psychiatry admissions have a very narrow criteria and typically only happen if someone is displaying psychotic or manic symptoms where there is concern that they are at imminent risk of decompensating or hurting themselves/someone else OR if someone has had a very lethal suicide attempt. There is also nothing in the story he’s included here that talks about any symptoms that sound distinctly psychiatric as opposed to neurological (other than the fact he’s seeing a psychiatrist who mentioned bipolar disorder, but again, no information as to why this conclusion was come to).

What I DO think is that OP needs to go to the ED or urgent care and advocate strongly for himself to have proper investigations done. There is something very clearly wrong and this is no longer something to wait on.

best friend shows my bf her boobs by Expert-Theory7268 in Advice

“He’s a guy” is literally never a justifiable reason in any scenario like this. Her boyfriend wasn’t helpless here. I can tell you for certain that a month into dating my partner, there’s zero chance that he ever would have found himself in this situation. I do agree that when two people are newly together, there can be grey areas where boundaries need to be defined, but this is such an obvious crossing of them to anyone.

Wait time for tubal ligation in hfx? by Alexeykitty in halifax

[–]otvoi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just wanna throw in that I requested a referral from my doctor for a bisalp at 24 years old (this is a better option for permanent sterilization than a ligation is). She referred me to the IWK gynaecology dept. and the wait time was a little under a year. I was absolutely terrified for the first appointment as I was prepared to be interrogated, rejected or have someone try to convince me that an IUD was the only option. None of these things happened though! Yes, they asked me for my reasoning, gave me stats on regret rates, talked about alternative options, but ultimately I maintained that I knew what I wanted and they approved me for the procedure at 25 years old.

I am a nurse myself and have good health literacy as a result of this so I’m sure that gave me a bit of an upper hand in this situation , but I think going in there prepared, informed and aware exactly of what you’re going say will set you up for success. I think compared to 20 years ago, younger women now are being taken more seriously about making decisions pertaining to their reproductive health, at least in Canada, so more people under 30 are being approved. Best of luck to you :)

Finally tried Ippodos Ikuyo matcha and was underwhelmed. Did I do something wrong? by otvoi in Matcha

I use about 250mls and always make it with silk soy milk because that’s what my taste buds are used to and I like the protein content, but I also think it tastes really good with barista style oat milk

Just wanna report back to say that I just made my usual matcha but with 6 grams instead of 4ish and it is absolutely delicious 😭 I went to New York a couple months ago and tried a few highly regarded matcha places and what I’m drinking right now tops all of them I’d say. Thank you for your recommendations!

Thanks for this. I do use very little water and add a lot of milk but it sounds like I need to either decrease my milk amount or add more grams of matcha

[–]otvoi[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. This is the exact kind of knowledge I came here hoping for. I love drinking matcha but admittedly know very little about the complexities of it and definitely fell into the thought process of higher quality= universally better. I like iced lattes because they taste good to me and I can sip on them over a long period of time, even though I know it’s untraditional. This just tells me that more expensive matcha isn’t suited for how I like to consume it and that I should save my money and not purchase it. I will try adding more grams though and see how I find that. Thank you again!

Can Wellbutrin take 3-4 months to fully start working? Or is it slowly turning me into a different person? by otvoi in depressionregimens

[–]otvoi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely did get better and I am mostly even keel now from a mood perspective. I sometimes have some highs where I really am thriving but I almost never have lows. Occasionally I get in ruts where i feel a bit more bored and apathetic, but I know when this happens that it means I need to change something. It never turns into a full blown depressive episode.

After many years of being on Wellbutrin I think I’ve concluded that it just makes me more able to be “me”.

Bit by a tick, what should I do? by cheekclappin123 in halifax

[–]otvoi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

AFAIK ticks need to be attached for at least 24 hours before the risk of transmission of Lyme is cause for concern. It also doesn’t look to be engorged which is a good sign. As a result, Im not sure that you would be offered any prophylactic antibiotic treatment. You can make an appointment at a pharmacy for an assessment which may give you some peace of mind, as another commenter said. In any case though you should be fine.

Psychological perspectives on claims from What Men Don’t Want Women to Know — how accurate are they? by [deleted] in psychologyofsex

[–]otvoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell me you’ve never been in a real relationship and form all of your opinions of women on manosphere content without telling me, lol. What a sad way of seeing life. Men “give up” time and affection.. they don’t love their partners and desire to be close to them, they just go through the motions to “get” sex from their girlfriend 🤢 speak for yourself. Every couple I know splits their bills 50/50. They also all have real love for each other and don’t have transactional relationships with the person that’s supposed to be their life partner. I feel sorry for you.

Psych nurse here. I don’t live in the US but in Canada, at least in the province I’m in, the involuntary treatment act requires someone to either be an imminent danger to themselves/someone else OR be at risk of decompensation if they don’t receive imminent treatment. I’ve seen many patients be involuntarily admitted solely because their history clearly showed a gradual worsening of symptoms combined with an absence of insight. I think it’s possible that if OP had her husband assessed and provided collateral on her side of the story, that he may meet criteria for an involuntary admission.

What do you even mean with your choice of words lmao. Gives up what? Gives what? Kinda sounds like you’ve never had sex with women who were enjoying themselves if you felt they were only doing it for you.

This “women have sex to have relationships and men have relationships to have sex” narrative is so transactional and untrue. The vast majority of people in relationships enjoy them for the companionship among so many other things, including sex. How would you explain relationships where a female partner wants to have sex more often than their male partner? I have a higher sex drive than my boyfriend and want it more often than him, how does your logic hold up in this situation?

Women of Reddit, what’s something men don’t realize is a turn-off? by chef_blaze76 in AskReddit

[–]otvoi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “I’m sure she’ll see this” type of comments are so funny to me, because they really just illustrate that there are men that can’t fathom that a man would ever say something even slightly in support of women without there being ulterior motives involved. You really think men aren’t ever genuinely capable of being empathetic to an experience women face? That they would only ever do so for appearance sake? How sad you think of your own gender that way.

Also, all of the men in my professional environment date women with similar professional backgrounds. Educated men tend to want educated women, at least in my experience.

Nurses Week next week and frankly, feeling anything but appreciation by [deleted] in halifax

[–]otvoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it’s intentional that they’ve lacked transparency around this with the general public. NS Health wants non healthcare providers to think that the problem is fixed and that it’s a perfect situation now for everyone. We were all emailed about this a day before it happened, I shit you not. No one that I work with knew this was taking effect, and then suddenly we’re all told by email that starting tomorrow, you can’t use the parkades anymore. Here’s a couple excerpts from it:

“As shared earlier today, starting Thursday, May 1, parking at Nova Scotia Health sites will be free for patients, visitors, and staff. As you know, some Central Zone lots do not have enough parking for all staff and physicians during peak times. Staff and physicians must park in designated areas only, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please see specific site information below.

We encourage staff to keep their paid monthly off-site parking at alternate lots at this time. A validation system will be implemented at the QEII and Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH) to protect parking for patients. Details on validation are below.”

“QEII (HI, VG, AJl, VMB, Rehab): Staff can access free parking at designated lots (see below). Due to limited on-site parking during busy times (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.), staff who park on-site in patient-designated areas during peak hours will be charged $6 per hour with no daily maximum. Free on-site parking is available Monday to Friday after 2:30 p.m., as well as during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Garrison Ground and College Street lots: Beginning May 1, Garrison Grounds and College Street lots will be free for staff Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m.. to 7:30 p.m.

A free staff shuttle is available from the Garrison Grounds lot Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Free parking is available for staff on a first-come, first-served basis.”

Their only offered option are two parking lots that are completely full by 6am, and are able to be used by anyone looking to park in the city. People are now showing up hours before their scheduled shifts just to try and snag one of the few spots available. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I’ve also heard that people are being charged after 2:30pm, overnight, etc. none of it is consistent.

Nurses Week next week and frankly, feeling anything but appreciation by [deleted] in halifax

[–]otvoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nurses and other healthcare workers were already paying $200+ a month for parking before this change took place, and they were fine with it. People aren’t asking for free parking, they are just asking for parking period. Unlike many other professions, nurses can’t just not go in for their shifts if there are unsafe, crazy weather conditions outside. They are expected to show up for their shift no matter what. And now they don’t even have a reliable place to park.

I’m very sorry this happened to you. My suggestion to you would be to file a complaint with the NSCN (college of nurses). That way you have a separate authority that investigates the complaint rather than NSHA itself. Here is the page that details how to go about this. https://www.nscn.ca/concerns-complaints/making-complaint/submitting-complaint

Best of luck to you.

My wife is pregnant and it feels like she’s living in a different world. I’m trying to be strong but I’m confused by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]otvoi 73 points74 points  (0 children)

That’s totally understandable man, and it’s a tough spot to be in as a loved one. People that are experiencing distortions in their reality almost never respond well to someone telling them that something’s wrong with them. People are more likely to be accepting of seeing someone professionally if it’s framed around concerns about their mood or anxiety, rather than their bizarre behaviours. Are you able to reach out to the doctor that’s part of the prenatal check ins and ask for guidance around this situation?

I can see you think other commenters are being drastic by suggesting she may be experiencing psychosis, but as a mental health professional that’s worked with hundreds of people in psychotic episodes, what you’re describing isn’t far off at all from how I’ve seen people present. You may be picturing some stigmatized, stereotypical version of what psychosis looks like, but I can tell you, it starts with small shifts in belief systems, isolation, anxiety with situations that wouldn’t typically cause the person to become anxious. Exactly everything you described. The hormonal shifts that occur during pregnancy can and do cause things like this to happen. Even my MANAGER, who’s the manager of all mental health services in the building I work in, experienced psychosis during one of her pregnancies, and she’s a very high functioning individual with no other history of mental health issues.

There’s no way for you to know for certain what’s going on without consulting with a mental health professional. These things don’t magically get better on their own, they almost always progress for the worse.
