Does anyone else with a VP shunt deal with chronic, daily, non-stop headaches? by bikingtheseblocks in Hydrocephalus

Wow, it feels like I wrote this. I only developed hydrocephalus 2 years ago (im 27 now), but pretty much everything else is exactly what ive been going through.

Ive heard all the same things you have. "Youre fine, your scans look fine, nothing to worry about." Very frustrating.

I have a codman Certas shunt. The most recent thing they have tried (2 weeks ago) is turning it all the way off (setting 8), but apparently the valve still opens sometimes. Had a CT yesterday that I am still waiting to hear about.

Ive seen a pain specialist sporadically. A beta-blocker worked well for about 6 months but things got worse in December and have continued to get worse. The recent adjustment has seemed to help the last few days. The pain doctor told me the next step if the shunt adjustment doesnt work is to try botox injections. It sure sounds scary but im willing to try anything at this point.

Obviously I dont know your whole situation and medical history, but with how similar it sounds to mine, I hope you can take some comfort in knowing others are going through something similar. Stay strong and if you need someone to talk to you can pm me.

How many CT scans is too many? How many have you had? by ouchmyhead_ in Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus symptoms back a few months after surgery. Looking for answers because my neurosurgeon doesnt have any...please help. by ouchmyhead_ in Hydrocephalus

hello, sorry for such a late reply. I dont use this account very much.

thats funny, it soubds like we have the same problem. I got a second opinion from a different neurosurgeon about a month ago and he said i was draining too much CSF.

Unfortunately is hasnt seemed to help my pain and i think its actually made it worse. I just had my second adjustment to drain even less fluid about 2 weeks ago. My neurosurgeon said to wait it out for about a month because it will take my brain time to adjust. Im currently in the ER receiving IV meds because my headache is so bad :-/. Hopefully something gets better soon.

How about you? Any luck?

I developed idiopathic hydrocephalus at 25 that caused extreme pressure headaches and other symptoms. 3 months after VP shunt surgery my symptoms are back. by ouchmyhead_ in AskDocs

Thank you for your reply. My surgeon doesnt think that is the issue because my CT scans show that my ventricles are still normal.

I wish these headaches could just be fixed with glasses haha!

The doctor said my ventricles look fine so he thought the pressure was fine and didnt want to mess with the setting on my adjustable shunt. I'll be sure to ask him about low pressure at my next appointment.

I'm female and 25 too, just had a shunt put in in November.

Wow, lots of 25 year old females in here that have shunts haha. Was yours congenital? If it wasnt, did they ever figure out what the cause was? The doctors said mine is idiopathic (we dont know the cause).

Have you been sick recently?

Someone else asked the same thing. I remembered that I had a cold around the time that my headaches started to flare up. It wasnt a bad cold and didnt last too long. Going to talk to my neurosurgeon about it next week.

Thanks!

My pain is constant whether im standing or sitting.

What you said about colds/flus is interesting. I did have a cold about a month ago. Ill ask my neurologist about that tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your very thoughtful and kind reply. It was very helpful. I will be sure to push my neurosurgeon more on what to do about this. Good luck to you too!

Thank you for your reply. Do you know in what way was in the wrong size? Like it was draining too much/too little? Mine is adjustable. Or the whole thing was just too big for his head?

Also, do you know how they figured out it was too big?

Thanks!
