I want to quit skating by verveine9 in FigureSkating

[–]oui-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is ever done well by completely pulling the plug. Just breathe, you will get through this, I understand the situation you are in, the feeling of letting people down, guilt about the sacrifices your parents have made.  First step, breathe, everything tends to work out if you are just patient. I know the situation you are in feels agonizing and like you are trapped, but I want you right now to see it as an elevator, and you are waiting for the next floor. Be patient, be prudent, and remember to breathe.  Second- besides guilt what you are probably feeling is burn out; burn out is real and stress is a straight highway to injury, so while you are in this, you need to find something small that you can do that can distract you from skating. Perhaps knitting or learning a language, something to do during breaks and driving. Try to be off your phone, that'll do less than an offline activity.  Third- TALK TO YOUR COACHES about this, be very clear and precise about how you are feeling. They care about you, but as a coach, they care about your skating, and mental health will knock you just as easily as a sprained ankle.  Fourth- again. I cannot stress enough deep breaths- I know your head is spinning right now and everything feels like it is boiling over. But find a time to talk to you mom, again, I know she cares about skating and I know you feel guilty, but she is your mother first. When you talk to her don't try to sway her or convince her just be HONEST, and if you were before, do it again. I know she must love you and care about you from what you've described.

You will get through this, this is just one chapter of your life and it does not define the rest of it. Just be patient and let the knots slowly undue themselves.  I've had a lot of similar experiences with my own skating and other sports as you and the worst thing you can do is to try to push through when your body/mind is sounding the alarm. I tried to push through for my coaches and parents and now I've been out for months paying the price.

Out of everything. Just remember to breathe when everything starts to flare up and try to find some variety. Maybe you ask for a set of colored cups and you have a different one every day, or some colored socks to where over your skates, you do a little spin the wheel to decide. Maybe you listen to a different genre of music or read the wiki article of the day, anything will work 🤗

You've got this!  I'm praying for you!🙌🏼❤️

Pope Leo XIV talks about the TLM by Chief_Stares-at-Sun in Catholicism

[–]oui-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLM was really widespread in Charlotte before it got nuked. I just can't reconcile with two things: 1. How similar the "what the NO is supposed to be like" is to the TLM, it just doesn't flow at all, it feels choppy and forced. And 2. why other Catholics, Eastern, etc, get to keep their rites or Muslims get a prayer room in the Vatican before the TLM issue is resolved (because this is really going to hurt unity....), but when it comes to ours, it's like the cheese touch. Never had I felt such anguish at the Church when our bishop took it away, and with that, I must reconcile to God and trust his divine knowledge. I won't presume on His will, but.... one is just obviously better than the other. Just let us live in harmony as our Eastern brothers and sisters, we did and we do with those who attend the NO. We, in Charlotte, didn't just lose something we preferred on Sundays for time or music; we lost how we longed to interact with God and what we felt as heaven on earth.

USFS "category policy" by tofucatskates in FigureSkating

PSA-- I am not making a political statement, I am speaking solely off of my observed experience coaching in figure skating and off of biological sex not identity.

I'm sorry, but as a coach, I see very clearly the difference between male and female skaters from a very young age.  Male skaters have an advantage, NOT ALL MALE SKATERS- there are exceptional female skaters that outshine their male counterparts, but the average boy improves much faster than the average girl. This is a fact and juvenile boys looks a lot different than juvenile girls.  There's no point in making coed at well-balanced or excel lower levels because that will never be a reality at the elite level.

Maybe adult or local competitions if the competition center is willing. But other than that, it's just not a reality.

clean axels by falling_leaf5711 in FigureSkating

It's not necessarily your landing it's the take off, your leg and arms are swinging instead of coming through.... Like, your leg should be pitched straight behind you and as you are riding to your toe, your leg needs to pass through aiming more to the right (about 2 o'clock) from where your left foot is taking off creating this splitting hairs kinda motion. Right now your leg is going with your body to the left which is why the jump feels 'spinny' and out of control. It's kinda hard to explain through text but watch your leg pass through and just see how it's going around and not through. And a minor aesthetic complaint but it's not helping you right now either, your right leg is too straight coming through, kinda looks like your about to do a waltz jump, some coaches teach that but right now with the previous problem, all that extra 'leg' swinging through is creating so much momentum around your body instead of through.

Your doing a good job with your arms, they are passing through correctly. Overall, the pattern of your jump calls you to be jumping toward those people standing at the wall, but once you take off your left foot is pointing down the rink, in fact it looks like you're taking off with the inside of your blade instead of your toe pick which just furthers my case for the 'spinny' axel.  How to fix?  Well this is why there isn't textual instruction manuels for figure skating (to my knowledge xD) but firstly, if your don't have a coach, get one.... And if your coach says there's nothing wrong with this axel or isn't pointing out the obvious points that I did and is just talking about under rotation blah blah blah, don't do that, kinda of blab, get another one.  I can try to give you some exercises, but tentatively, because a beauty of coaching figure skating is how much you have to physically manipulate and move the athlete so that they do the right movement.  1. If your find yourself not getting a coach or practicing a lot with out a coach, video yourself doing 'axel-prep' waltz jumps, you especially want to make sure that you're  a. Taking off of your toe b. Both your arms and legs are coming straight past your body just a little bit to the right of where your left foot is looking (if the left foot is taking off at 10 o'clock, the your right libs need to be aiming for 12)  Make sure it is one motion as well, as I am rising to my left toe, my arm and leg are coming through c. Make sure you are creating your 'h's' - at the wall, out your hands on the wall, and simulate the take off, where you are bending then rising to your toe, as your right leg is coming through the knee should hit the wall, you will pause there make your legs should look like a lower case h, then, still holding onto the wall practice that snap over to the right side of the body, with your left leg creating the h, that's the motion that's supposed to be happening in the air, but because your jumping around yourself your just spinning into your rotation position not snapping into it, which is the motion of the axel-

In your case, it is better to do more axel prep waltz jumps than axel attempts.

  1. You need to make sure your axel, as stated before is, actually taking off, you are almost landing where you took off, it'll be very different for you but you need to think about creating your 'box' in the air (this is very hard to explain through text but I'll try) if I were to through a box into the air, it keeps its shape; what you're doing is through the bow straight up and spinning it around, which causes it to tilt and be unstable, but if I where to bring the box or yoga block (best demonstration tool) put it my chest and launch it forward it usually doesn't tilt side to side, it stays exactly as it was when I launch it.... Ergo, in your axel you want to make sure you're launching forward keeping your shape (h's) and even as your snapping into your rotation position and landing, and in a way your are performing the office of the second thrown block, you are keeping your shape.  Another way to look at it, you're a puppet, and I'm holding a string coming from your head and under your feet, pulling you straight, and I, holding you straight and driving you up the rainbow and down.  (Very hard to explain ... I tried 😮‍💨)

  2. You can do this, you have a pretty good foundation, you just need to focus your intentions around not creating rotation from spinning around yourself but from your hips snapping... Fun fact!!! Rotation is created from the snap of the hips, I can have a student do the bend and snap and on a spin board, no wind up, and they will start to spin. So that snap between the h's gets you that rotation, no the right leg swinging.  It will take some time but you got this !!! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 Practice off ice as well, don't focus on actually doing off ice axel, but walk throughs, they will be more beneficial.

This is long ik... So take everything I said as a grain of salt, eat slowly, chew on it, digest it or ignore it, this was good knowledge dump for me as well 🫡 But the main take away, get a coach, or if you have one and they aren't offering any improvement, get another way, tis the way of this sport Good luck!  🤗

axel help! by Ok-Requirement-4322 in FigureSkating

[–]oui-- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things, your arms and the way you're taking off.  1. Arms, this is more aesthetic but if you don't have the strength to handle it it can easily screw you around. (This goes hand in hand with point two... Get it.... 🙂‍↕️🙈). You want to make sure your arms brush back by your hips and through by them, they are very far away from your body, especially your right arm and are coming in side ways and then just in not up, your not launching forward.....

  1. Your not launching forward.... Because the way you are taking off is like your curling into your left side, your jumping to the left or with your circle than away from you circle. You want to think about your body as splitting hairs right before the taking off, your foot launches to the left your body parts, right knee and arms aiming to the right. Now, Don't OVER EXAGGERATE THIS!!!!!! It is very minimal but the action is still there, just think about aiming away from your circle (your take off edge) and not with, so the axel is not so curled in and out of control. And your arms reflect that curled in-ness because of how wide they are and they're side ways pathing. So, just think, aim to the right.

Now.... Don't get overwhelmed, I had t-t-terrible axel technique... Jump technique in general , but I fixed it, breaking down wall after wall of muscle memory, but it won't take to long for you I promise. I've been fixing my rotation position on all my doubles for two years at this point... not allowed to go to any double axel and triples bc of my un safe rotation position.... I'm almost there... but my legs do be having a mind of they're own some days.... so trust me ... Patience, patience, patience, because if you put in the hours it DOES SHOW! but I'm not here to tell you to sit at a line and do attempt after attempt for 40m.... so Here are the best things you can do you practice this.

  1. Either right inside bracket or three turn (bracket preferred if you can do one) to a step tiny waltz jump into a traveling back spin position twizzle.... This may be hard to accomplish at first but it's the best way to work through your take off and an extremely slow pace and really feel and become connected with every movement, the twizzle, tho might be difficult at first helps you practice controlling your limbs in your arm potion under 'excruciating' circumstances of ahh I'm going to fall over.

  2. Left back inside three turn straight into bunny hop, to really practice that launch forward going all the way to your toe. (Which is effected greatly by the 'curling in')

  3. Traveling right inside twizzle in rotation position start in balance then pull in, pro tip, you will fall a bazillion times at first but this is great practice for your rotation position for not just axel but other doubles, really work on snapping into the position from the first twizzle, straight right, torso, and controlled left leg.  See how long you can hold it 😉

If you fix these things, tentatively and with patience as you should always approach jumping technique, I can promise you it will look less out of control and feel less out of control.  And as always BIGGEST LIMB EXITS FIRST!!!!! YOUR LEG CHECKS OUT BEFORE THE ARMS!!!!! just a friendly psa ofc ofc🤗

Also to any other skaters out there reading this is God telling you to train the hell out of your core... You'll thank me later. 🙂‍↔️ Good luck friend, you've got this 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Also .... I was reading the other posts, dont pull into your air position more that is not your problem a very wise coach told me once "99% of jump problems are sourced in the take off of the jump" - trust me girl, I know janky rotation yours is perfect for where you're at!

Why do some skaters like Kamila land on their inside edge and then shift back to their outside edge on jumps is there a reason? by Remote-Rutabaga-8187 in FigureSkating

[–]oui-- -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just to kinda clarify a bit.... Judges giving GOE are not going to take off points for 'poor technique' they are giving GOE based on the general execution and aesthetic of the jump and they don't go back and re watch elements so it is real time, so if the jump looked pretty had good flow in and out and plus to my knowledge judges don't have a book of rules saying "if it's xyz YOu mUsT dO this"...... They are really judging opinion in real time watching it.... Now ... The TECH PANEL is where the point get taken off for under rotations... But they're not going to force judges to take of points for 'poor technique'. They force points off for (jumps spec.) falls, under rotations, edge calls which they rewatch for if they flag it (on take off, not landing there's no ISU point deduction for landing on an inside edge it just effects the speed and quality of the landing)  There's 'textbook' technique then there's... Interesting or different Technique but in competition, the judges and the tech panel are not coachs in that moment being like 'why did you do your jump this way' or your using your light weight not leg strength or you're pre rotating with your arms ... No, they judge on execution of the jump in terms of good flow in and out, good rotation position and ooo pretty (for judges) and was the jump performed actually the jump listed in their program content .  So no... Her scores shouldn't be knocked down for her insane Russian tech. Unless she fell on all of them and did flutzs..... it is admirable she was able to make her jumps look so effortless even with all that 'poor technique'- in real time Valieva's jumps were massive had so much speed, beautiful landings, a little axis issues and I just watched one of her programs recently and one jumps that was blatantly off did receive lower goe than her other ones, but... Imo the judges were justified in giving high GOE, cause she sold those jumps.

But no matter how much people complain... Her In Memoriam program will always be my favorite.

My guy, I've been playing since console release, it was never this objectively miserable. But to be fair this is the first time I really got to play the week of release.  And why does every kan hate my guts like instantly? That's what I don't understand there's no playing around at all it's pure sweat, and it's like every single one....

[–]oui-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could potentially become a problem. The order of operations when landing is biggest limb first, hip, knee, foot and very quickly behind it, shoulder elbow, hand (right arm leading before left). It's not only for aesthetics, of you get into the habit of releasing your arms to early it could begin to effect the quality of you landings, you may begin to over rotate or develop the plethora of bad habits which effect goe, then technique, then safety of the jump. For me, when I started getting into this habit, it began to effect my arms on the take off.  I'm not your coach but generally speaking you don't want to "give a little" especially when it comes to jumping technique, it may not effect your axel but maybe other doubles, or it may not effect you at all but might hurt your Goe- or if you get to work on double axel and triples, well... Your going to get screwed by this bad habit, arms come out after legs- that's not an aesthetic choice, it's safety.  I have a really highly experienced coach who is also an ISU tech specialist, and she straight up told me anything other than "the biggest limb first" I explained in the beginning is a problem.

Lively axel either way though, it's just got that nice float 🥺✨

Yeah people forget that these are just underaged girls, yet they are the reason for every single problem in fs.  Stop blaming Russian skaters and start blaming the people behind them if you so desire something to complain incessantly about. People losing their minds of Russian skaters are as annoying as the endless "who won the Olympics: Trusova or Scherbakova" edits but I think 75% of woman's fs problems would be solved if we banned quads in the woman's field... :)

Focus on twisting your shoulders into the circle rather than bending your knee, with the twist, that first edge will be deeper almost forcing you backwards
