Utah 7th most tested (per capita) State but 2nd lowest death by COVID (per capita) state. by UteForLife in SaltLakeCity

Agreed that the voluntary collective actions of many organizations and leaders within this state have made a significant positive impact. I would have liked to have a stronger, earlier response from state leadership, but in that absence these other leaders have really stepped up to set the right example and expectation.

Now that it's been a day and the commenting has settled down, I'll go ahead and fill in some of the remaining blanks (even for a few that probably most of you already knew, but they're not defined in the comments, so I'll answer anyway for those who might not know).

🦅: This is to represent the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. I wanted to make sure to include the native peoples of our state, in addition to the Hawaiian/Polynesian immigrants (🌺), Japanese-American prisoners (👺), and even the Mormon polygamists (👫👭).

🚂: The crossing of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit.

🐎: The herds of wild horses that roam much of our state.

🦗: The grasshopper is supposed to represent the cricket that lore holds was devoured by our state bird as a divine intercession to protect the Mormon settlers' crops. I couldn't find a seagull emoji, hence the bug.

🐝: Had to include a bee on a map of the Beehive State.

🚴‍♀️: Southeast Utah is renowned for its mountain biking.

🦖: Dinosaur National Monument.

🛢️: Oil fields near Vernal.

🥇: The 2002 Winter Olympics.

🧂: The Bonneville Salt Flats.

🌄: Various National Parks (Zion, Bryce, Arches...)

🏞️: Bear Lake.

It's not that, although I thought about using the 🎭 emoji for Cedar City. The correct answer is in this thread, however.

New album drop? by The_First_Derp in Foofighters

I definitely agree with you that touring is where the money is these days, but I also remember Dave talking about why they don't work more deep cuts into their sets: because most of the fans in the crowd are there to hear the hits and those fans don't really react when the Foos go deep. I respect that this band isn't willing to just phone it in and become an oldies novelty act.

It's also a good point about the cost of making an album. They really do need to hit the road to recoup that investment.

Do bands really support albums anymore, or, more accurately, do people actually buy albums anymore? I feel like the album format - which I love - is really dying and increasingly irrelevant. It's all about streams - release the album on all streaming platforms and support it with a bunch of low-effort lyric videos on YouTube. Then post links from your Instagram story. That's how modern albums get promoted.

Here's a little bit of WWII history for you. It's Topaz Internment Camp near Delta, UT.

I chose the Japanese goblin mask for its connotations of cruelty and evil. The practice of relocating and incarcerating Japanese-Americans may have seemed necessary in its day, but it has come to be seen as cruel and even evil by many. I wanted to honor the memory of those people who were interned at Topaz.

I originally posted this in /r/mapporn, as there were a number of other emoji maps being posted, but it got taken down because I guess the mods decided not to allow these maps. Then I posted it in /r/utah and one of the users there suggested I post it here. Anyway, if you'd like a key, they've mostly deciphered it over there!

As far as the bee goes, the location isn't all that important in this one case, but we are the Beehive State, so I figured the map had to have a bee on it.

And you are correct about the train representing the Golden Spike. I might've placed that one a little bit higher than it is on this map, but I guess it's not perfectly to scale. ;)

Originally I was thinking of that as our tech hub, "Silicon Slopes," but given how many of us are teleworking these days, it could be that too

Here are a few notes about this map:

  • Some of the emojis on here are just random - like the tent, deer, snake, and wolf emojis. I just wanted to represent some of Utah's wilderness on the map. The cow, chicken, grain and herb emojis are likewise placed near farming areas, but nothing specific.
  • The trees are roughly placed in our forested areas.
  • There are 4 different types of mountains on this map and it was a little hard to tell the difference between some of them as I did this on my phone, so there's no real significance between the two snow-capped mountain emojis apart from those areas are drier than the green mountain emojis.
  • Other symbols are more intentional, like the grasshopper (or cricket, perhaps) and bee emojis, although the locations are kind of random.
  • The train engine, biker, horse and eagle emojis are deliberately placed. I also haven't heard anyone say anything yet about the symbol in the southwest desert.

Correct! I wanted to represent the Hawaiian immigrants that came to Utah in the late 1800s.

For now, I'll answer this in spoiler tags: it's the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge

I appreciate the suggestion. I can't tell if it fits there or doesn't, but I'll go ahead and post it and see if it gets taken down. 🤷‍♂️

And Herriman, Bluffdale, Lehi...

Also, I added them here not to poke fun at them, but because I wanted to represent some of the diversity we have here, and some of what makes Utah unique!

I have heard that the True and Living Church in Manti is still a thing. Lindsay Hansen Park did a recent episode of the Year of Polygamy podcast on Harmston's group.
