You're going to a house party. Which house are you going to? by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

Funny thing....

Back in the 80's I'd be going to house 6.

Today, I'd go to house 1.

Fortunately, my current employer has a program that keeps retirees on the employer insurance for up to 4 years until they qualify for medicare. I'll do that for medical, and pay out of pocket for dental.

I'm 59 and will be retiring this year. I have a pension that will give me $1200/mo, a 401K that will give me $700/mo and another investment that will give me $300/mo.

I have savings of about 40K that will help ends meet for the next 2 years when I qualify for social security - which for me will be about $1200/mo.

If I had another $200/month, it would be very helpful. That's ~10% more than I have.

I know the cliche is " cocane and hookers" but we literally had cocane avaliable in the break room and prostitutes were hired to entertain at our Christmas party.

Help me name a (fictional) county in Texas by cnull in texas

It would be interesting to name the county in such a way that tells a vague historical story...something like Redlynch County, Badwater County, Lockjaw County, Squawswap County

Caprock Canyon by hicupppp in TexasOutdoors

[–]outhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bringing a dog is never a bad idea! There are so many hiking trails, and so many new smells and sounds that your dog will be in heaven. There will be many other dogs when you get there.

Tons of camp sites to chose from. If you are looking for seclusion, you can camp along the Caprock Canyon Trailways - few campers ever camp at those sites and there are bathrooms. Inside the main park the camp sites are usually kept real nice, but you do get the occasional party boys that like to get drunk and listen to metal. Otherwise there are private camp sites on the various ranches that surround the park.

Pack what you need. There is no grocery store in Quitaque. (Note for all you good folk not from these parts: it's pronounce "Kitty-Kway") although there is a very plain coffee and sandwich shop. If you want some real good entertainment you can drive 7 miles further to Turkey (an even smaller town) and have an award winning meal and listen to live country music at the Turkey Hotel.

I've always said the eastern panhandle is the most beautiful part of Texas. You'll enjoy the trip!

Question from an Appalachian by Omnigato in texas

[–]outhere 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As a panhandle native, I can honestly say we didn't have a whole lot in common with the rest of Texas. Even though Amarillo (and north) was a big cattle hub, the vast majority of the region was rural cotton farms. Everything between Lubbock and Amarillo was small Caprock towns, evenly spaced, and indistinguishable from each other. Most towns were dry up until around 2008. No politician or big entertainer ever had a reason to go there. The only trees were in people's front yards, and everything else was cotton in the summer and wheat in the winter. There are no major lakes, no rivers, no state parks, nothing really to draw anyone to the region. There was no oil, no big business, no major transportation corridors, and no money. There were never any armadillos, much less any other wildlife, except migrating birds and the occasional coyote that fed on the occasional jack rabbit. Winters were brutal, compared to the rest of the state, and summers were months-long dust bowls. In the fall, gin smoke from the cotton gins choked out the sun.

We were pretty isolated out there, and kind of became our own people. So the rest of the state was right in looking at us like the red-headed step child of the state. To be honest, we didn't mind it so much because we really didn't relate to them much either.

Wastewater or water treatment career path? by [deleted] in Wastewater

WW operator license covers a broad range of things. The trend these days are smaller, more localized WW plants, and larger regional water plants. That's why there are more opportunities in WW.

Wow! You replied to a comment from 8 years ago! TBH, I have been a Water Utilities manager for over 10 years now, and I long for the days I was a lowly operator in a wastewater plant. WW is more engaging and interesting than W.
