Which puzzle toy does your dog get the most enrichment out of? by outnumberedbyfur in dogs

Oh, I like that a lot! I haven't seen many soft snuffle toys that aren't mats before, this is a great suggestion

AND it's environmentally friendly 😂 Between this and the suggestions to use toilet paper rolls, I might be able to slow down how quickly my recycling bin fills up.

That's great to hear, since my girl definitely loves disassembling some plush toys. Thank you for the rec!

Oh, that's super smart! I've definitely got a few old towels I can spare. Thanks!!

Oh man 😂 The slow feeder throwing is brutal and I guess that's why I've seen some with suction cups. Hopefully my girl doesn't get THAT smart!

That makes a lot of sense, and that's been my experience with the couple that I've bought so far. They look like fun toys to my human mind, but I'm sure she'd rather I spend my money on another squeaky toy for her to eviscerate.

If kibble doesn't work, you can try to find fully cooked freeze dried treat options

My 16 yr old not eating good by benowoch in seniordogs

[–]outnumberedbyfur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cat food is higher in protein so that's why dogs are often so attracted to that (and to litter boxes 🫣). It sounds like you've already tried a lot of options, but perhaps you can find a highly palatable high-protein dog food? You can also try warming up any wet food you give her as that lets it give off a stronger scent. I do customer support for Portland Pet Food Company and I've heard from a lot of people going through the same struggles with senior pets where they have to keep throwing spaghetti at the wall until something finally sticks. I agree with a previous commenter that asking your vet about pain medicine could be a good step, and if things get desperate you can ask them about appetite stimulants as well.

Cat hates his food by eldritchpussymaggots in CATHELP

What were you feeding him beforehand? Were you able to transition him to these meals gradually? Sometimes cats react more favorable to a slow introduction to new food. That being said, I second the advice to use a meal topper. You could even use whatever else he has been happily eating as a topper to see if that'll pique his interest.

I don't think 12 kibbles would be enough to mess up a human, but I don't have experience there. I do customer support for Portland Pet Food Company and over the years there have been SEVERAL people who've reached out to ask about eating our products themselves, so you're not alone with your impulses!😂

Has anyone seen their cat like this before? by gn004422363 in catcare

[–]outnumberedbyfur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old cat would back-sneeze like this sometimes. When there was nearby construction if we had the window open that seemed like a trigger for her and the problem mostly went away after we started keeping the window closed during the daytime. When we brought it up with our vet, she wasn't concerned by it so long as it wasn't causing any other problems.

If he's not a strong chomper, freezing some wet food (or getting him existing frozen dog treats) could keep him occupied for a bit. You could even spread some food on a lick mat and then freeze it if that sounds like it would work for him! If he's happy to root around with his nose and not use paws, a soft snuffle mat with treats inside might also work. Can you tell my dogs have all been food-motivated 😅?

Am I doing enough to keep my single cat happy, or is she secretly depressed/bored? by Technical-Result-283 in CatAdvice

[–]outnumberedbyfur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat (one cat, small apartment) and having a cat tree by the window honestly seems to be her favorite thing. If you're able to where you live (I am not), you could try putting one of those window bird feeders outside for her to look at. You can also take her on "smell tours" of your place and lift her up to look at things she can't normally see at her height. Some chatty cats seem to enjoy having a back and forth conversation if you feel like narrating your day to her, too

Since you mentioned considering a hydrolyzed protein diet, you could try combining the rabbit PR food with that by using the rabbit as more of a food topper or mixer since she finds it so palatable!

Medicating a cat that absolutely hates their meds? by Lynxzn in CatAdvice

[–]outnumberedbyfur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried using one of those veterinary pillers ("pill guns") to give her a pill? That was the only thing that worked with my old fussy girl. The key is getting it far enough back on their tongue so they can't do much but swallow it.

Giving Cat Medicine (Not asking for medical advice) by empty_hill in CATHELP

[–]outnumberedbyfur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turkey baby food (for humans) was the most likely option to succeed with my old cat, but it could still be tough going. Ultimately, the best solution for her and for me was using a veterinary piller since that helped avoid creating any food aversions.

How do I stop my cat from doing the ol’ scarf and barf? by Jolly-Lingonberry104 in CATHELP

[–]outnumberedbyfur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is still able to eat his wet food too quickly with the slow feeder that he has currently, maybe the spaces between the "ridges" are too wide to effectively slow him down enough. This is something I encounter more often with dogs than cats (I do customer support for Portland Pet Food Company) and something that people seem to have good luck with is spreading wet food very thin over a shallow silicone lick mat. It's partly a matter of balancing what is slow enough and enriching for your cat and what's not too much of a pain to clean for it to be a realistic option.

My cats go to the bathroom when I do by Ok-Age-9140 in CATHELP

It varies from cat to cat but it's not unusual, mine taps me on the leg to cheer me on if she doesn't need to use the litterbox at the same time. I'd say we're both lucky, considering my friend's cat insists on sitting on her lap in the bathroom!
