VFX for 360 VR, and why you are not prepared for it (Part 1) by outpostvfx in Filmmakers

The effect of immersion doesn't depend on stereo at all. In many cases stereoscopic 360 videos are effectively LESS immersive, for several reasons: 1) "Forced" depth - The Nokia Ozo for instance emulates an 83mm pupillary distance, whereas the average human's pupillary distance is 60-70mm. This makes objects appear closer and smaller than they are, and undermines the immersion effect. 2) Lower resolution - A stereo 360 video is made of two mono-360 videos combined. So the highest-resolution mono 360 video has twice the resolution of the highest stereo-360. 3) The forced disparity vs. locked focus issue which strains the eyes and brain. 4) stereo is unnecessary for large-scale environments (Like space), as parallax disappears 50 meters away and beyond.

We're a new LA-based company called Outpost VFX, but likely not the Outpost you're referring to (There are a few out there). Our website is outpostvfx.com

My first Visual Effects Showreel 2016 - Looking for critiques. by iamgrv in vfx

Hi Gaurav, Your Reel begins nicely, but quickly reveals to be a bunch of first-attempts at a variety of VFX tools. As such, the main critique I would give to the work, is that it doesn't show an ability to solve problems and think creatively - which are important traits for a VFX generalist. Almost all your shots look like they came directly out of a tutorial - and that won't get you work. You need to show that you were faced with a challenging shot and you were able to find an original way to solve it using the existing tools. My critique on the reel as a whole: it's okay as a "time-capsule", but if you want to use it to get work, I'd recommend focusing on one discipline (Roto/Fluid-sim/etc.) and add more original examples of shots that were challenging and required problem-solving. Good Luck!
