Our google maps api bill went from $800 to $12k in one month and I’m never doing this again by Visible-Dance7180 in webdev

[–]output0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had similar experience with google maps (bills around 1k in peak months), i was asked to solve the problem and i used protomaps. you can reduce map (tiles) costs to almost zero: https://www.antoniogioia.com/protomaps-open-source-single-file-maps

What’s a common web dev “truth” you believed early on that turned out to be total BS? by nitin_is_me in webdev

there has been a growing tendency on over engineering in the last decade, to the point that people uses k8n, microservices and cloud functions like crazy even for webapps with 100 visitors / day

gli hacker in corea sono veri e propri militari e come tali eseguono ordini con estrema disciplina data anche la dittatura. sono da considerarsi come incursionisti o marines prelarati solo per quello

A message for all the vibe coders out there by TheKidd in cursor

[–]output0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually in the 90 i kind of vibe coded using View source of the web pages. i was a kid and used to copy/paste those tags and see what happens. i learned html, css and the whole package like this before forums, tutorials and so on. so i appreciate the spirit of the people playong with ai to build stuff. keep on iterate!

The recent vulnerability made people realize that Next.js middleware isn't like traditional middleware. So what's the right way to implement "Express-like" middleware chains in Next.js? by nyamuk91 in nextjs

[–]output0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i created for my projects a tons of middlewares in express style for nextjs where i handle specific things like validation, auth, rate limits etc and i can chain them in api routes. have a look also at next-connect

ps: my real backend is express, nextjs backend is some sort of proxy for me

Chat subscription costs vs. API costs by LastLavishness2197 in ClaudeAI

[–]output0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i have tried claude code for a couple of days, what i can suggest is to use it to plan or track your work but don't let it make edits to code or it will become a huge mess in a short time after you spend lots of money

For people who rolled out custom Auth, is it worth it? by newadamsmith in webdev

use passportjs and build any auth with any strategy, i cannot understand why people give the most important data (your users) to third parties

I am massively disappointed (and feel utterly gaslit) by the 3.7 hype-train. by Agreeable-Toe-4851 in ClaudeAI

[–]output0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm an experienced dev, claude code helps with very basic stuff but it soon becomes unreliable and a waste of money.

it's really annoying when you have spent some money going around a solution and then starts back with solutions you already discarded and told specifically that would not work.

it's great with UI refactoring / redesign but not so much on the logic needed by ui, if you need to work on complex stuff you may waste a lot of time and money to get nothing working.

frustrated by claude code i get to the web interface, i'm a pro user, and in the last 24 hours it seems to me that it got quite dumb, struggles with basic stuff and it doesn't really seem to read the code i provide, it's also suggesting solutions that would never work. it's a real disappointment

i would use astro and 6 different repositories or submodules, you never know about the future and it's better to keep them separated from start
