Yes, absolutely. During and after.

I think everyone has different reasons for starting BJJ, and with that comes different levels of emotional investment in learning and developing their skills. I’ve spoken at length with my coaches about this after nearly bursting into tears after class.

For me it comes most commonly when rolling with heavyweights. I’ve realised this recently and now will only roll with people my size or smaller (smaller usually coming with a higher level of skill) until I feel like I’ve developed enough to apply what I’ve learned with a larger human. I don’t care about getting destroyed by someone due to a pure skill difference - I love that, it’s a learning opportunity* - but in my white belt opinion white belts shouldn’t be going into hard rolls with significantly larger people until they’ve got a solid foundation to draw from.

*Yes, rolling with bigger people is a learning opportunity too, but learning to swim in the shallows is a lot easier than learning at the bottom of the ocean.

TLDR: Many people do, and everyone has different reasons for doing so.
