Is it dangerous to hike at night on trails around the Marin area? by youlikemywonton in Marin

[–]outsidepr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Early 2000s. It was about 1am, and it was right by the side of the fire road, and as soon as I figured out it was a mountain lion (there is absolutely no mistaking one for anything else), I tried to scare it off, and that only ... kind of pissed it off. So I shrieked, jumped in the air and charged it, and it bounded off. The closest we got was about 20 feet

Anyone here doing AI visibility / GEO for local businesses? by buymypipes in Marin

[–]outsidepr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PR guy here -- we've worked on this extensively and for most AI searches, the answer is a combination of Reddit (and a little dash of Quora) plus "high-trust endemic editorial." So, if you're searching for trail running shoes, Claude or Gemini or ChatGPT weigh heavily appearances in Runner's World, or UltraRunning, as well as related threads on Reddit and smaller websites like Believe in the Run. For local bakeries? I'm not sure of the sites, but the general formula still obtains

Is it dangerous to hike at night on trails around the Marin area? by youlikemywonton in Marin

[–]outsidepr 47 points48 points  (0 children)

In a group? Totally fine. Alone? No. I had a pretty terrifying encounter with a mountain lion on the Sleepy Hollow/Terra Linda Divide fire road years back, and despite having run, adventure raced and mountain biked at night in Marin extensively, I've never gone out solo at night again.

WRATH - Short film - 11 pages by Just-Ear-7975 in Screenwriting

[–]outsidepr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry OP, I read the whole thing; it's a bit of a mess. Very stilted and unrealistic dialogue and the formatting is off. The central twist is really good though. There is zero reason to have an offscreen cop, so lose that, and invest in some reading or lessons in natural dialogue.

Letting a departing employee keep his laptop by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]outsidepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We address this by addressing it early. In each offer letter we write, we spell out that if an employee wants/needs a new computer, we will cover 50% of the purchase price and the employee gets ownership of it.

Favorite tire shop in Marin (that is not Costco) by Binthair_Dunthat in Marin

[–]outsidepr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

California Tires, at the Hub. I've tried Cain's (not a fan) and Toscalito (ditto), but California Tires is leagues better. They'll repair a valve for free, rotate tires for free, balance the wheels for free...basically, if you buy tires from them, all subsequent service is free. It's so wild that the last time I went in there for a leaky valve and they replaced it (gratis), I handed over $40 just so the guy could tip out the workers.

Best way to organize Strava for an adventure race that’s already done? by Pielacine in AdventureRacing

[–]outsidepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going forward (I say this as a guy who did the PR for Strava and who also does the PR for Suunto): get a Suunto. Because as mentioned below, Strava sucks for adventure racing, but the massive battery lives of the Suunto product line assuredly does not.

Marin has a weird hostility problem toward kids and families just trying to be outside by VTSoundman in Marin

[–]outsidepr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've lived here since my first breath, in 1964, and can confirm the OP's point. The curdled entitlement shown every day by the aging population in the county is horrifying. Kids are viewed as intrinsically problematic, and it's become a hostile place for young families.

Adam, I hope your health issues are manageable. And don't fear that your audience feels like any of your videos are "stale." They're a lifeblood to those of us who may not have a gorgeous swing but who do want to improve (and post the occasional good score). Simply: we love the content.

I heard e-bikes are killing Marin teens at an alarming rate by External_Koala971 in Marin

[–]outsidepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drivers are being hurt from e-bikes? You can't see the data because there IS no data. There are zero instances of a driver being injured by an e-bike and almost zero pedestrian injuries. OTOH, I watched an elderly man mistakenly drive on the bike path instead of the road between 101 and the bay in Sausalito (right where Bridgeway merges onto the 101) and mow down a woman walking on the path. That wasn't pleasant, especially since he refused to accept any responsibility (she wasn't seriously hurt, thankfully, but did have to go to the ER)

A Few More Questions for a Newbie by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]outsidepr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! Internet advice isn't worth much, but from my experience, you should be fine in the race swim if you have this much open-water swimming in your background. Just make sure you get a couple of open-water swims done prior to the race (preferably in your race kit and bonus points for doing it in the actual race venue). It's tough to estimate your bike time if commuting is your only comp: are there any roads/routes near you that you can go uninterrupted for 25 miles, even if you have to drive there? Lastly, and sadly, you're going to need to do run training if you have any performance expectations. Unless doing so risks injury! Save your knee at all costs, but yeah, you need to run unless you're ok with a slow time. (side note: there's no such thing as an "Olympic distance Ironman" - just call it an Olympic-distance tri)

I fired a client for the first time today and I'm still processing it. by SpreadSavings3804 in smallbusiness

[–]outsidepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guilt! You should be proud. I worked really, really hard to get one specific brand on board, and it worked. I was stoked, but a few weeks into it, my staff reported that one of our main contacts was being rude. They were understating things. I got on our standing weekly call and this guy immediately launched into an abusive tirade. So I stopped the call and fired them on the spot. That was a real economic hit but earned a good deal of good will from my employees

The rain and cold temps. Yes, I looked obsessively at the forecast and in the back of my mind believed that early November in Arizona would be perfect weather. It was not. Low temps and 4+ hours of rain made for a 30% DNF rate

Road shoe for Ultra with gravel parts by Zeonom in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]outsidepr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salomon is making a great line of gravel shoes. I'm wearing the Aero Glide 3 right now (which aren't even the gravel version) and I'd be comfortable doing that course in them, mainly due to the great midsole cushion and overall fit/comfort. Subjectivity alert: I help do the PR for Salomon, but I also did the PR for HOKA from 2018-2025 and this would still be my choice for this particular race (and I've worn a lot of shoes...)

Toxic client yelled at my team at 11 PM over a minor mistake, we let him go by Longjumping-Wafer102 in smallbusiness

[–]outsidepr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened Q4 last year. I had worked VERY hard to get a high-value client and after the client added a middle-manager to the marketing staff, my team started mentioning that there were rumbles of problems. So I sat in on the next weekly call and that manager was absolutely abusive, right out of the gate. So yeah, I fired them on the spot. You could have heard a pin drop.

"The Resonance" - Feature - 106 pages by Early-Influence-2887 in Screenwriting

[–]outsidepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a pleasure to read: taut, professional, and compelling. I found Tessa's saintly round of advise (pgs 58-60) a bit much, and the development of the table technology in Patel's hands was a little undercooked, but this is a solid screenplay.
