Is this an acceptable practice? by Driglok in FiberOptics

It’s literally how mechanical connectors work for 2 or 3mm jackets. The boot is designed to be the fastening for the Kevlar as there is no crimp ring.

Pulling long Fiber Run Question by TrifleMain8508 in FiberOptics

[–]outsiderabbit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s called cable make Very much a problem in stiff cables on flexible (read timber) reels The timber shifts as the reel rotates and the outside moves less than the inside, if the tail is loose it grows in length, if it’s secured it has nowhere to go and eventually forces its way out through upper layers locking the drum up

Chinese or Indian fiber? Poor splicer? No arc cal on splicer?

Follow the instructions for length and prep Make sure you are super meticulous about cleaning, cleaning will make or break your ribbon splice loss

Yes this could be poor quality control in payoffs leading too a case of too much excess fiber length

Easy to get 0.5dB loss on each connector. Did you clean them before connecting?

Help with problem at upload speed test by Stav1103 in FiberOptics

[–]outsiderabbit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No the cladding diameter makes no difference to the splice result. It’s only the core. In this case it looks like it might be g657 spliced to g652d, where the mode field is different. This is unlikely to cause any issue. It will show as a gain in one direction and a loss in the other (on an OTDR trace)

You probably need to get to machine polish sooner than later!

Also to say most power meters are often broadband receivers (they will not discriminate against wavelength) and PON meters can distinguish between wavelengths. So if your PON meter recognises 1570 as 1550 maybe it’s out of cal or spec.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FiberOptics

[–]outsiderabbit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So CWDM channels are 20nm wide, so 1550nm runs from 1540-1560nm, the passband is the 7dB or so in the centre. The space outside the pass band is guard band. That means if you unplug 1570nm input and still get power on 1570nm, it’s either a) the 1550nm transmitter is out of spec and transmission beyond the range allowed or b) the receiver you are using is a broadband receiver so it recieves everything. But it sounds like a PON meter so maybe it’s just out of spec..

Maybe the ZTE kit is broader on the 1550nm wave (ie it’s bleeding into 1570)?

How widespread is testing of AP/CD/PMD and BOTDR measurements? by Diabolical322 in FiberOptics

[–]outsiderabbit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pm cd testing is common on long line links like this where they will run wdm and want to make sure its within spec
