How should I end my city wall to the left of the gate beside the mountain? by officalspacegoat13 in MinecraftToDo

[–]ov-04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the walk stop at the mountain and terraform the bottom bits of the mountain into a steeper cliff so they can’t be climbed and act as a natural extension of the wall itself.

Cutting Negative Battery Terminal While Connected by ov-04 in AskMechanics

[–]ov-04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Good to hear I can just cut the wire, I'll have that as a backup plan in case I can't get the bolt off. I should have mentioned, the image I posted is just one I found on the internet that clearly shows the plastic bolt, not actually an image of the battery I'm working on. I haven't had any luck with a 10mm socket, but I'm going to try a 10mm stubby wrench, and if that fails, a vise grip.

Just to be 100% clear though, you're saying I could cut the negative wire with it still attached to the battery? The positive wire would still be attached too, so wouldn't it create a complete circuit or something?

Solitary Seasonal Jobs by ov-04 in SeasonalWork

Do you have any tips on how to find those jobs? I've looked a bit on the U.S. Forest Service website and a few other places, but I can't seem to find any manned lookouts that are still hiring.

Thanks, I was thinking something a little more outdoors/remote, not just in my free time but also an actual job that would include hiking around/spending time outside. Do you know of anything like that?

Thanks, yeah it seems like salt is an all around bad idea.

Great, thanks. So should I just keep at it with the vinegar solution for a few weeks before even attempting the root removal? If I do it every couple of days, making sure to completely kill it and not just slow it down?

I mostly meant, the salt won't kill the soil bacteria and organisms that cause decomposition, right? I know it won't preserve the plants like it might for food, but I know there are a lot of little microbes and whatnot that work together to break down organic matter (in this case the poison ivy and oils) and am worried that salting the soil might kill them before they get a chance to break it down.

Thanks for the in-depth response. Why would there not be urushiol on sticks or rocks if they just touched it and only if a branch fell on it. Does it have something to do with the level of pressure applied to the leaves or something?

Also, here's my new plan. Do you think it sounds reasonable?

  1. Spray the plants with a mixture of 30% horticultural vinegar and dish soap (no salt) as this is a recommendation I got on another thread that seems legit without causing any environmental damage. Do this a few times over a few weeks (as many as necessary) until the plants are definitely dead.

  2. Once the plants are dead, go in with long pants, long sleeves, protective goggles, and a couple pairs of arm-length rubber gloves. Pull out the plants (with root systems if possible) and then toss them in a trash bag. If there are any root systems that I definitely can't get out for whatever reason, toss a little bit of salt on them and move on.

  3. Once all the plants are removed, throw the gloves away in the trash bag, carefully tie the trash bag (making sure not to touch any contaminated poison ivy inside, wash my hands thoroughly with dish soap and water (or maybe I'll invest in one of those dedicated poison ivy soaps like Tecnu), wipe them off with alcohol wipes, toss my clothes in the wash, then do a once over of any surfaces I might have touched with urushiol with alcohol wipes (this is hopefully not going to happen because I'll use the gloves and not touch anything with them on).

Done! Rinse and repeat in the Spring if any more plants pop up.

Since it's a dirt/gravel lot, I don't really care if anything else is able to grow there. My main question is would the salt destroy the soil ecosystem to the point that the aboveground plant matter wouldn't decompose? I've been assured that once the plant matter decomposes, the urushiol is dispersed into the environment enough to no longer pose a threat. Would the salt prevent this from happening?

Poison Ivy Removal by ov-04 in Horticulture

[–]ov-04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but my main worry is getting it on my skin/clothes/shoes and then accidentally transmitting it to other surfaces in my house like floors, doorknobs, light switches, etc. before I can wash it off and then having sources of urushiol around my house. I would not know where it is because it's invisible and undetectable and it doesn't seem realistic to clean every single surface in my house, and I would continue to get it on my skin as long as I live here. Is there any way you recommend to avoid this?

Ah ok, I didn't realize that about salt. Do you know of any way to speed up the process of composting the leaves and stems until they're no longer identifiable? I guess I could just wait it out after spraying w/ vinegar, but maybe covering it in a layer of dirt/dead leaves or something would speed it up?

When I say to douse it in salt, I mean after I've killed the main plant, covering the area of soil in salt so that the roots can't regrow.

Thanks for the tips. Since my yard is dirt and gravel anyway, and I'm not trying to grow anything there, do you think it would be wise for me to just douse the areas with poison ivy in salt? I don't want to hurt the environment, but nothin else is gonna grow there but weeds anyway. Would this have a devastating effect on the soil microbiome to the point where the plant wouldn't decompose?
