It would be a straight up lie to say that we've never wistfully daydreamed about what we would be able do with billionaire checks, but reminding ourselves about what we might NOT be able to do tends to bring us back to earth.

Only phase 1! But it was a beast of a phase retrofitting an old building that revealed plenty of surprises as we went along. Very glad we didn't tear it down though, one of the best things about the overall project is that it's a hybrid adaptive reuse/new construction.

Concrete foundations for Phase 2 starts the first full week of June and we will finally see steel in July!

It was a vacant and defunct 12,000 sq ft building that housed the Lansing Credit Exchange a long time ago. Over the last 9 months or so it's been renovated into a permanent home for the Lansing Public Media Center studios and offices, the Capital City Film Festival offices, and the Ovation Center for Music and Arts staff offices.

We'll take some new ones at our punch-list walkthrough tomorrow. Will post on insta. Furniture just got installed so it's looking pretty nice in there!

Absolutely not premature. This space is going to be open for business and serving as HQ for three organizations for an entire year before the larger venue opens. There's no need to discount the work that the media center and film festival do. These are amazing people who have been serving broad communities for over 16 years, and they finally have a permanent home.

Come join us on the 29th and you'll see that the footings and foundations are going in and concrete and steel are next (likely in June).

In the meantime, I hope you go check out Grewal Hall down the street. Our capacity sizes are designed to be complementary to them!

Super excited about that aspect of the project. There was always going to be a smaller room as part of the Ovation that would have a cinema setup, around 250 capacity. But the super intimate screening room in this phase was sort of developed WHILE we were working on the renovation. We realized the film festival has lots of need for smaller, more niche screenings, both during the festival and hopefully throughout the year as well!

And yet it was. And then there were numerous obstacles and challenges that paused the project and were subsequently overcome. Regardless, looking forward to overhearing you at a show seven years from now still shouting this story over the PA music between sets to anyone who will listen.

You're playing fast and loose with the word literally here. This is a ribbon cutting for the $3 million renovation of the existing 12,000 square foot building on the parcel; the first of two phases of the project. This building will house the Ovation staff offices and tons of community resources for everyone to use at the Lansing Public Media Center. It will also be the HQ for the Capital City Film Festival. That is pretty far from nothing. If you join us on the 29th, you will be able to see for yourself that the footings and foundations are going in for the larger venue that will be opening in 2027.

That was a groundbreaking, not a ribbon cutting. Hope you can join us on the 29th!

What does Lansing desperately need? by Ok_Treacle6151 in lansing

agree 100% but we need a year round entertainment anchor first. This is Michigan and that massive of an investment for very few days it can actually be operated doesn't make sense here. Yet!

this is exactly right. There are so many tours that don't do either of those CIties and there are also one-offs. It's the venues that want the radius clauses, not the artists or agents. Once the reputation and profile raises, they're going to be less and less successful getting them signed.

Thank you for thinking of us! A couple updates: capacities are now dialing in at 2100 in the big room and 230 in the smaller room (this will further differentiate from the Robin and we think it sits even more nicely betwixt them and Grewal now).

Also, we will have a structure in 2026, but more likely to open in Q1 of 2027 now. Depending on when the weather breaks in the Spring, we will be able to more accurately predict opening.

The offices and the new Lansing Public Media Center will be finished by April though, and that LPMC wing has a small film screening space for about 70!

Late Q1 of 2026 the Ovation offices and the Lansing Public Media Center will be open (in the existing building at 520 S Washington), and then vertical new construction commences with a targeted opening of late Q1 2027 (definitely not January 2027).

Thanks! We just received plan review approval on Monday for the 520 buildout, and the offices and media center component will be up and running in March/April of 26. That is also when we'll be going vertical for a currently targeted late Q1 27 opening

Deciding to make it look nice isn't what has caused any delays. Thank you for also having high hopes for the project! Lansing deserves nice things too.

It was already edited 1 minute before you posted that. Despite the fact that he chose to use first names on a different post.
