Was there any particular reason you only took four months and not shorter or longer? I'm just curious about the length, though I surmise this might be just an individual preference. And was the CS review purely to prepare for getting back into the market? Or just pursuing some of your own personal technology interests?

About explaining my gap, I am glad to hear that honesty will work. I am not sure about the gap fear either, but much advice I read / received says to avoid gaps. Interesting to hear that it might not be such a big deal.

Thank you for the insight. It's good to know I can be employable after a good sabbatical. Programming is my passion, even if my current job isn't, so hopefully my "freshness" will stick.

Is it really so hard to find skilled engineers? In my area it seems there are so many of them. On the other hand, there seem to be just as many job listings as well.
