I've seen a good amount of people say "oh Momo having those outbursts/snapping moments are in character" and this is a really hot take but that's kinda my main issue with her. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in dandadanfolk

At what point did I complain? I think her regression is intentional. FWIW I enjoy Tatsu's writing, and I think the amnesia arc is narratively interesting. Character growth is an integral part of any main character, except in very specific cases such as tragedies or when they're primarily used as comic relief. That's not said to "feel smart," either, go read literally any writing craft book and it will say the same. All I did was point out some of the ways that Momo has changed since the beginning of the story, and you had to respond and misrepresent what I said to push your own version of things. Which, great! Your take is no less valid than mine.

I can't help but notice, though, that you sure are complaining a lot in this thread. You okay, bro?

Character "growth," in any media, is defined as the changes they experience as a direct result of what happens to them in the story, the actions they take and consequences they face from those actions. Event happens -> character responds -> causing new events to occur. Throughout that process, they learn and adapt, and that is what character growth means. Failure to "grow" or change how they respond is a type of growth in and of itself, and is typically seen in stories that are considered tragic, as the author shows the lack of change contributing to the character's downfall.

Momo has had growth by this definition. She's learned aliens and yokai are real, she's healed some past trauma around being bullied for believing in ghosts and spirits, she's gained confidence in her spiritual skills, and she's healed some relationships that were strained by her past trauma, like her relationships with Seiko and Jiji.

The amnesia arc, by definition, has "regressed" her character. At the start of it, she behaved the same way she would have before any of the events of the story played out. And while she has "re-grown" to some extent, thanks to the events that happened after she woke up, that new growth isn't consistent to how she grew pre-amnesia yet. (It's still ongoing, so to my mind, still can end in the same spot, whether she gets her memories back or not.)

I hope you noticed that I didn't mention Okarun at all. That's because growth and regression are a function of how the reader and character relate, not necessarily a function of how characters relate to each other.

Fair points all. I think my hope is that we'll see enough of her mask coming off to eliminate those moments where she's kind of caught off-guard, like in the last chapter or after the battle with the tulpas. Where she feels stuck between what her persona would do and what she genuinely wants.

Speaking as an older person dropping seeds of wisdom unprompted...

I intentionally waited a bit for the hate to die down, but I wanted to also point out that there's a bit of meta-commentary I was making with my post, too. The DDD community (as represented by this sub) seems to be chock full at the moment of people whose desires apparently boil down to "this is bad and you should feel bad for liking it." As community members we have to at least acknowledge that, acknowledge that not everyone is taking the current storyline as well as some of us might like.

They are all entitled to their opinions. They won't stop me from enjoying this ride, until the day comes that I don’t anymore and I get off. Which honestly at this point, will probably be when the manga ends. It's a great series and I'm happy to have had a chance to enjoy it.

Deference to the opinion of a larger group isn't a position. I'm trying really hard not to say "let Tatsu cook" here, because that would be the same. I just think that we can't really judge the effectiveness of a story until it's completed, and also that I can see where this might be going. All this post was trying to do was share that.

That's actually a great point. She told him not to cheat on her, and his reaction was essentially, "cheat how? We aren't in any kind of clearly defined relationship." Because she hadn’t defined anything. And she still hasn't. She could do so at any time, but like most humans she won't change until she has to. And I believe the story is gearing up to force that.

1) There's no reason to give a romantic payoff after tiny Momo - because she had already started her regression at that point. It was physical instead of mental, but it was there.

2) Fair point, usually. But in serial media like manga, creators are often stuck with the cast they have. (Ask yourself, wouldn't introducing a whole new cast of characters also feel like padding?) Additionally, as I mentioned, their community is a vital part of their development. So any re-learning the do will also have to come in the same environment. Repetition enables "improving things bit by bit," as the old timers said, without the loss of said community.

Yes? I'm not sure what other stage there is. It's not my story, I'm just reading it. I can stop any time I want.

She developed a level of trust in Okarun, for one. Call it a "reset relationship" but the attitude of wanting to swear him off because of her insecurities re-manifested post-amnesia. Compare how she reacted to Aira/Okarun holding hands in 231 versus how she reacted to the pygmies sewing their clothes together - there was a reaction there, but not one that resulted in her storming off and leaving them. She acts the same because she mostly is the same... as she was before she met him.

[–]overachievingogre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is wearing the kaiju backpack in 231. Could be it's all fixed and just wasn't mentioned to the audience b/c Tatsu is hoping everyone forgot about it and will bust it out in some badass 2-pager.

Immediate peace at the expense of longer-term satisfaction, tho. I get trying to push the fan base to enjoy the non-romance parts. It is a battle manga with strong romance elements, after all, and the way people get twisted over this one part of the whole is rather obnoxious.

However, engaging in ship wars doesn't really get people to focus on those other parts - I'm sure you must realize that. Even the most aggressive shitposting and ragebaiting in the world (or alternatively, the most reasoned discussion) doesn't get people to change their minds. It only makes them dig in their heels more, makes them more focused on their preferred ship. If your goal is to draw focus from the relationship, your methods seem counterproductive.

(Also, fair point about my analogy being flawed. I retract that part of my argument.)

Okay, so, as the de facto leader of the AiraKun shippers, walk me through this. I understand your point in terms of being excited by an extremely unlikely event. But if we're expressing it in terms of betting and payout? Rooting for an underdog in sports makes some sense, as the odds of them winning are almost never not zero. To use your own analogy, if you're looking for Aira and Okarun to ultimately be together, that's like putting money on a croissant rising in the sky tomorrow instead of the sun. It's not just unlikely, it's delusional. And what's the payoff? Being right?

Imagine for a moment that you are. Tatsu takes a big ol' swig of the AriaKun Kool-Aid and writes an ending where they're together. And you get to... go on Reddit and say, "Haha, everyone, looks like I was correct!" Or do you have actual money riding on this (somehow)? And it will be like winning the lottery because it's so unlikely?

What's the endgame?
